I opened the door, my door, and a cold draft rushed out of the naked walls and up from the hard floor . . . slapping, chilling me there in the doorway. The sound inside of the room was like the last hreath within a casket — certain memories preparing to be interred there. Upon its steeled frame the stripped bed and matress clung together at the far end of the room. Across from it the hollow desk froze stiffly into a silhouette of anticipation. Every stereo note had evaporated and every poster — color on the wall had been torn away. And now, those glowing interior corners — all of these damn corners that were disguised to give the room a personal flow, to give it curves — these wicked corners had lashed back again and filled in every space, sterility had returned. The car ' s all packed up. Come on, we gotta get going. He had come up from behind me. Inna second, I said, standing there with my shoulders slumped against the doorway. What ' s the matter? I gazed through the window into the -June daylight. The sunbeams penetrated the room, taking the shape of the window; they filtered through the floating dust particles, and settled into a neat square glow on the floor. I knelt down, parting the curtain of light, and spread my palm against the shimmering pattern. Warm . . . Then I traced out the sunlight square on the dusty tile, rounding the edges, and placed my initials in the center. And with every line the square seemed to get warmer. I rose, turned, and pressed in the lock on the door. Okay, I said. Let ' s go. And the door quietly shut behind me. i
