Serving as chairman of the music department from 1951-67, Lanner has also directed the summer music school and the summer concert series that provides Colorado Springs with outstanding chamber music. In 1958, Max compiled Notes on the History of the Music Department of Colorado College , covering the department ' s activities from 1874. Lanner is from a Viennese family filled with accomplished musicans; his mother was a concert violinist, his father was a composer, pianist and teacher. Max was a child prodigy on piano and violin. As contributing performer and a source of attraction for numerous nationally known musicans, Lanner has performed with violinist Erica Morini, Nathan Milstein, Grace Moore and others. Max, throughout his 29 years on the CC faculty, has been known also for his emphasis on student perfor- mances. Dr. Max Lanner has brought his talents, cultural essences, and musical vitality to the Colorado College and the Colorado Springs community. Betty Young, former chairman of the CC Women ' s Physical Education Department, after 19 years on the CC faculty, has retired and become professor emeritus. Believing in recreational sports, Ms Young does not agree with the emphasis placed on sports competi- tion. Sports should be fun, not just one organized contest after another. noted Betty in a recent Sun interview. Betty also noted that she would like to see people eat, drink, and smoke less. They should get off their parker house rolls and drop the spectatoritis at- titude towards sports. Ms. Young will remain active even in retirement with her numerous ac- tivities; singing with the Colorado Springs Chorale and instructing swim- ming for the Red Cross. She has been an instructor for 30 years and hopes to resume teaching handicap swim, a program she once directed at the old 14 EDITOR ' S COMMENT: STABLER AND WORNER This year two fine professors are retiring: Betty Young and Max Lanner. We are assured that they will continue to be a vital part of the Colorado College community even in retirement. In addition to recognizing these two fine professors, we would like to thank Professor Robert Doc Stabler, Prof. Emeritus Biology, for his con- tinuing support of the College. A member of the CC Athletic Department recently noted, I ' m not so sure Doc isn ' t the 1 CC fan; seems to be at darn near everything — foot- ball, baseball, hockey . . . Doc is a constant driving force for the lacrosse team and was the founder and coach that brought the team from a club into intercollegiate status. Doc is still active as a lacrosse coach with Jim Soran. Back in the early 50 ' s Doc was the swim coach — before CC had a pool. The swim team had to practice at Fort Carson, but in lieu of this hardship, Doc led the team to two Rocky Mountain Conference championships. Doc is not only the number one fan but a great supporter of the athletic department. Doc provided the soccer team with outstanding films, the baseball team with new uniforms, the pool with a super timing system, and that is just to name a few. While at CC, Doc was the head of the biology department. This may ex- plain his fascination for snakes and falcons. Doc lives in Venom Valley, rumor has it he loves to ham it up at parties at his home by bringing out a rattler on a forked stick to show folks how Venom Valley got its name. Doc has been biten several times, but someone in the alumni office says that just makes him tougher. Also Doc is a falconeer — one of the first in the area. Doc has also worked with the Civic Players ... I believe he had the lead in Death of a Salesman. All in all Doc is a unique man; it is the Doc Stablers, Betty Youngs, and Max Lanners that make Colorado College the community of scholars, the community of friends it is. As a closing comment, we feel there is one other individual to recognize, President Lloyd E. Worner. Through another economically difficult year, President Worner has guided the college. His foresight continues to keep Colorado College among the top liberal arts colleges in the nation. 15 ta vi C y J va. clu all cry U3 CytOA. We want to emphasize the impor- tance of not only the well- known athletes, but the every morning jogger or the once a week handball enthusiast. On the side of competitive sports, CC had an outstanding year. Honors were swept in numerous areas. Bruce Kolbezen was this year ' s recipient of the Van Diest award (a high quality blend of brain and brawn). CC swept three Ail- American spots this year — Peter DeGolia in swimming, Tom Benson in football, and Ed Mio in hockey. Numerous teams took honors regionally, statewide and nationally. Con- tinue Page 43. 42 This year saw undampened enthusiasm for intramural sports. New areas were opened; the old ones — volleyball, hockey, and softball, proved their continuing appeal to college men and women. Numerous inter- department games (the annual Biology Chemistry or Political Science History softball games, brightened the strenuous spring blocks. To all the organized, half- organized, and spontaneous sports events — hail, this is one great part of college life. — editors 43 VOLLEYBALL The CC Volleyball Team is a unique com- bination of athletic ability, brazen sportsmanship, and striking power. The team played in the League of Colorado Schools, the City Parks and Recrea- tion League, and several tournaments. The fine coaching of John Kessel aided the team in its undefeated record in the City League. TOP: C. Loomis. ABOVE: K. Trotter, S. Minter, and T. Harding. MIDDLE RIGHT: C. Lehman. However, the Ruggers certainly made up for their lack-luster on the field, by partying wildly after each game. The CC rugby men are proud of their fun-loving reputation and members brag that they ' re, . . . the best damn partying team in the whole union. Senior members to miss out on next year ' s exciting games and activities in- clude: Pres. Hugh Cheney, Capt. Tim Bennett, Brad Berge, Doug Chrisman, Bruce Lowry, and Mike Thompson. High points of the season included, the ERRFU (Eastern Rockies Rugby Football Union) sponsored Oli-Cup. This 15-team tourney held at the Air Academy provided the team with challenging games and good times. High point for Capt. Tim Bennett occurred at the end of the season, when he was awarded the most honored, Peter Budge Award. Next year ' s club will be led by Pres. Mike Brennen and Capt. Dave Banks. Ac- cording to tough Bumblebee Don Miller, next year ' s hive includes, alot of talent, but needs bigger beef. TOP: D. Banks and B. Berge. MIDDLE; B. Lowry, and T. Bennett. BOTTOM: D. Banks, R. Lewis, M. Bren- nan, and H. Cheney. 46 The CC Tigers had another outstanding season this fall with a win loss record of 8-1, losing only to the University of Redlands. Lead by a powerful senior force — Bruce Kolbezen, Jim Pogue, Mark Bergendahl, Randy Kinskey (captains); Bob Hall, Chuck Olson (Honorary captains); Dave Kinsey, and John White. Among Tigers receiving recognition were; Kicker, Ted Swan, High Scorer; Tim Beaton, Most Improved Player; Bob Hall, Most Valuable Player. CC was again honored to have a player selected as a Kodak Ail- American Junior, Tom Benson. Looking ahead to next year, the Tigers anticipate another fine season lead by captain elect, Mark Buchanan, and the many returning players. This year ' s outstanding record can be attributed in part to the strong coaching staff headed by Jerry Carle, with the assistance of Frank Flood, Leon Eastlack, Ed DeGeorge, Jerrell Lear, and Bruce Kola, trainer. Dick Schulte and Alan Carroll, co-captains, led the squad to its eleventh ranked position in the Far West. The 5 top scorers were: Larry Weisgal, Dick Schulte, John Monteiro, Guy Jackson, and Bob Shoop. The Tigers were able to ac- complish an unparalleled feat at home this season: beating every team in the Rocky Mountain Conference at least once. The fine coaching of Horst Richardson and assistant coach Bill Boddington, was essential in the win- ning of the Rocky Mountain Conference this Fall. UPPER LEFT: T. Lee and B. Shoop. LOWER LEFT: D. With a season record of 24-14, the Tigers placed third in the WCHA Western Division. The power packed Tigers provided the 2,500 plus fans at the World Arena with constant excitement culminating in bringing the playoffs to Colorado Springs for the first time since 1950. Unfortunately, the Tigers lost to the University of Michigan by a score of 13-11, at the end of the second night. Numerous individual players received recognition. Ed Mio and Jim Warner were named to the WCHA All Star Team. Mio was also selected First Team All American goalie. Warner was named Freshman of the Year. Honorable Mentions were Dave Hanson, Jim Mitchell, Greg Smith, Mike Haedrich, and Jim Kronschnabel. Dean Magee was a real crowd pleaser, breaking the all-time school record for the most penalty minutes. A special credit to this year ' s fine season is attributed to the Coach of the Year, Jeff Sauer, his assistant, Bruce Kola and Mike Radakovich, and the team managers, Al Medina and Walt Predovich. Highlight of the year was winning the Governor ' s Cup over arch-rivals U. of New Mexico in the latter ' s home state. The meet was televised in Albequerque and the Governor of New Mexico was there to present the trophy. Top skiers for the year were Steve Simasko, Steve Roberts and Jan Rosenfeld. Steve Roberts was voted most improved and along with Chuck Watts has been selected to captain next year ' s squad. Almost all the skiers are ex- pected to return except senior captain Eric Feder. In true Beta tradition 1974-1975 was a year of ex- quisite social activities, including: the Champagne Poker Party, the Casino Party — fake chips and fun, the Sunrise Party, and the annual campout. The Kentucky Beta chapter invited the CC Betas to the Derby this year — most of the house took in the Kentucky Derby at Churchill Downs. Taking in the Derby eased the pain of being unable to host their annual Demolition Derby. The Betas took part in the Colorado Springs Big Brothers Program as their community service project. Rush this year proved profitable with fifteen pledges replacing the graduating seniors. ABOVE: C. Atwood and C. Seymour. BELOW: P. Bansen and B. Spence. 105 ARTHUR HOUSE AND ABOVE: T. Holmes, T. Philanthropic ac- tivities for the year form an impressive list — sponsoring a Foster child in Ecuador and visits to Wallace Village. In addition, the Sigs helped a new local business get on its feet by working voluntarily for the Hilton Inn catering service. On the fun side, the Sigma Chis sponsored three all campus busts first semester. The two traditional formals were held again this year; Wine and Roses in the fall and Sweetheart in the spring. Patty Maas was selected as this year ' s sweetheart. The beginning of second semester saw the Sigs busy with rush, which netted them an excellent pledge class. The new neophytes will help to replace the graduating seniors: Mike Allured, Rick Benoit, Scott Blackett, Mark Collins, Toby Gallegos, Steve Goettge, Steve Koloskus, Bob Krimmer, Bruce Mansfield, Ran- dy Millian, Chuck Noziska, Sandy Pelz, Dick Reeve, Dick Schulte, Terry Ver Haar, and Larry Wesigal. The Phi Delts more memorable activities in 1975 include ski weekend, the Ch ristmas party, Pledge Formal, and the traditional 50 ' s dance. The Community Service Day entailed removing diseased trees from Sky Hi Girl Scout ranch. Rush proved to be a highlight of the year, with the Phi Delts netting seventeen rushees. Purple Garter, Fiji Island, and numerous parties on all the Holidays — St. Valentine ' s Day, Halloween, St. Patrick ' s, topped off by Ski Weekend kept the Fijis moving. A weekly TEC — (Tuesday Evening Club) — gave a good part of the campus the incentive to make it through the week to FAC — (Friday Afternoon Club.) The fun and work paid off as they netted 30 pledges in the fall, plus five more in spring rush. Social activities included the Kappa — DG fall formal, pledge formal and the spring dinner — dance. Informal parties with fraternities and the St. Valentine ' s Day Massacre party with the Kappas, Fijis and Kappa Sigs highlighted the active social life. On the more serious side, activities with the Deaf and Blind School included Halloween trick-or-treating, vision screening in the elementary schools and working (and playing) with the children on Saturdays. Under the Block Plan, one may spend an entire year in one academic building; many events are readily identified with physical structures: sports — El Pomar, sciences — Olin Hall, or military science — Cossitt Hall. Although many students did not know a book was under production, a small and somewhat efficient force worked sporadically to bring you this edition of the PIKES PEAK NUGGET. It is our wish that you may catch a glimpse of The Colorado College in the academic year 1974-75 — the fine, liberal arts college nestled at the foot of Pikes Peak, only sixty miles south of Denver. Our most heart-felt thanks go to our photographers: Peter Bansen, our photo editor, who rotted his fingers off in the line of duty; Dave Banks, to be known from now on as most foresighted , for identifying photos when he took them; and Mary Maffei, for sticking with us past the end. On the other side, that is, the copy side, we would like to thank Mary Reisher and Pat Meyer. Their late night typing pulled us through. Irene Wakimura, a valent faculty sales person, is presently regaining her health after repeated fits of frustration due to faculty respon- ses concerning possible subscriptions; thanks, Irene, you tried. Also, our thanks to Rich Kilbride, an ad salesman, who had to face a tight year compounded by 192 tight businessmen. Without the undaunted humor of Hank Pearly and his right-hand-man, Jay Heartburn (also known as Frank Purdy and Jay Hartwell) many a night would have been a failure. John Fotenos, you dear man, who would have ever thought working for Walsworth Publishing would bring you into contact with people such as us. On our thanks but no thanks list, we would like to include the architect of Cutler Hall who put all the hot water pipes in our office ceiling; the color-blind people who painted our office dirty yellow trimmed in dirty orange, and our faculty advisors who insisted we have a photo index. Also on our thanks but no thanks list are all the professors who wouldn ' t show up for pictures and the professors who wouldn ' t buy a book because they think they will be able to get a free one. Finally, thanks but no thanks to the CCCA, inspite of their survey showing that the students preferred a NUGGET to an unnamed literary journal, they funded the journal for more than last year and cut the funding of the NUGGET, so that it will be almost impossible for next year ' s editor, Peter Bansen, to get a book published. Is there a place for such unrepresentative government at CC? Our question for the future. We hope you enjoy what may be the last edi- tion of the PIKES PEAK NUGGET.
