The Freshmen and Sophomores attended the Vandalia Campus, and the Juniors and Seniors attended the Greenwood Campus. One must keep in mind that these two campuses were constantly striving to form one school. Your school life at C.H.S. will hopefully be kept fresh in your memories, and the highlights of the 1971-72 school year will unfold as you turn each page of this book. An afternoon view of the Vandalia Campus shows that its beauty has not escaped. The Greenwood Campus awaits the planting of trees and shrubs. 3 Two Campuses—Collinsville The Vandalia Campus. High School Kahok spirit exists in ail seasons. The 9-10 Center’s halls arc ready for another year. The Vandalia and the Greenwood Campuses combine to form the Collinsville High School. Sop ho mo res— Early in the year, 15 student council members and 10 executive board members were elected by the sophomore class. The Sophomores were very happy to be able to participate in their first homecoming this year. After many hours of hard work the class finished their first float which to us was a success. Our class was well represented by Kim Daly, who was nominated as our football maid. The song “Superstar” was heard as Kim was escourted by Senior, Kent Ward. Many other projects, such as, bake sales and car washes were started by the executive board to prepare our class for the expenses of the next year. The Sophomores again were pleased with their choice of Debbie Weil for their basketball maid. Debbie was escourted by Jeff Stephens. Looking back over the year, the sophomores believe that they have made a very fine start at C.H.S. Vice President Secretary . . . Treasurer . . . Karin Busiere Jim Lotz Diane Huber Drinda Fischer The Class of ’73 has had a great and memorable year. Entering a new school was a big event for everyone. We were looking forward to homecoming weekend, but first we had to think of some ways of making money. Selling candy, key chains, Kahok buttons, stickers, and bean bags were among our projects. The theme of this year’s float was “Kahok’s Marmaduke Kicks Blue Devils in the Dog House”. We were proud to be the class to win first place. Looking forward to the next evening which was another big event, ‘‘Somewhere Over the Rainbow” was the theme of our first building of the Coronation. It turned out to be worth all the time and effort that had been put into it. Cindy Wittmann was elected Junior Football maid. All of the hard work, school spirit, and lots of fun has made our class a great success. We are looking forward to another great year at C. H. Don’t be fooled by the face I wear. For I wear a mask, I wear a thousand masks, masks that I’m afraid to take off, and none of them are me. I give you the impression that I’m secure, that confidence is my name and coolness my game, that the water’s calm and I’m in command, and that I need no one. But don’t believe me. Please. My surface may seem smooth.. .beneath I dwell in confusion, in fear, in aloneness. But I hide this. I panic at the thought of my weakness and fear being exposed. That’s why I frantically create a mood to hide behind, a nonchalant, sophisticated facade to shield me from the glance that knows. But such a glance is my salvation. My only salvation. And I know it. It’s the only thing that can assure me of acceptance and love. I’m afraid you’ll think less of me, that you’ll laugh, and your laugh would kill me. So I play my game, my desperate pretending game, with a facade of assurance without, and a trembling child within. And so my life become a front. I idly chatter to you in the suave surface tones. . .1 tell you everything that’s nothing, and nothing of what’s everything, of what’s crying within me. So when I go into my routine do not be fooled by what I’m saying. Please listen carefully to hear what I’m not saying. I dislike the superficial, phony game I’m playing. I’d really like to be genuine and spontaneous, and me. But you’ve got to help me. You’ve got to hold out your hand even when that’s the last thing I seem to want, or need. Only you can call me into aliveness. Each time you’re kind, and gentle and encouraging, each time you try to understand because you really care, my heart begins to grow wings, small wings, very feeble wings. I want you to know how important you are to me, how you can be a creator of the person that is me if you choose to. But it will not be easy for you. A long conviction of worthlessness builds strong walls. The nearer you approach me, the blinder I may strike back. It is irrational, but despite what the books say about man, I am irrational. I fight against the very things that I cry out for. But I am told that love is stronger than walls, and therein lies my hope. My only hope. Please try to beat down those walls with firm hands, but with gentle hands-for a child is very sensitive. Who am I, you may wonder? I am someone you know very well. I am every man and every woman you meet. f ri f iftnsr EXECUTIVE BOARD-SEATED: Kathic Wittmann, Kim Kingsbury, Mary Smiley, Carla Davisson. STANDING: Sponsor; Mr. Ron Adams, Janet Russell, Cindy Osborn, Ben Milster, Lcni Tavcggia, Larry Bennett, Sponsor; Mr. Richard Stutts. Seniors—Class of '72 Last September the Class of ’72 entered a new Collinsville High School for our last year. Just three but very important years ago we had entered C.H.S. excited, nervous, and full of anticipation. As the years slipped by we found ourselves learning, participating in activities, and having fun. Our sophomore year was filled with the excitement of our second place float in the homecoming parade. Our productive junior year started with a first place float. Hard work went into a successful Coronation; “King Neptune’s Court.’’ It continued with a beautiful prom entitled “Knights In White Satin,’’ and finished with third maid in the May Dance. Our senior year has brought us many memorable moments; moments that in the future will be looked back upon many times. President . . . Vice-President Secretary . . . Treasurer . . . Or is it love, happiness, and sorrow. And a constant hoping for a better tomorrow? Mr. Adam’s class. 215 Hope is not a dream, but a way of making dreams become reality. Today is the first day of the beginning of your life. Do You Remember? Desiderata Go quietly amid the noise and haste and remember what peace there may be in the silence. As far as possible without surrender, be on good terms with all persons. Speak your truth quietly and clearly;and listen to others, even to the dull and ignorant; they. too. have their story. Avoid loud and aggressive persons; they are vexations to the spirit. If you compare yourself with others, you may become bitter of vain because there will always be greater or lesser persons than yourself. Enjoy your achievements as well as your plans. Keep interested in your own career, however humble; it is a real possession in the changing fortunes of our time. Exercise caution in your business affairs, for the world is full of trickery; but let this not blind you to what virtue there is. Be yourself. Especially do not feign affection. Neither be cynical about love, for in the face of aridity and disenchantment, it is as perennial as the grass. Take kindly the counsel of years, gracefully surrendering the things of youth. Nurture strength of spirit to shield you in misfortune, but do not distress yourself with dark imaginings. Many fears are born of fatigue and loneliness. Beyond a wholesome discipline be gentle with yourself. You are a child of the universe no less than the trees and the stars; you have a right to be here, and whether or not it is clear to you, no doubt the universe is unfolding as it should. Therefore be at peace with God. whatever you conceive Him to be. And whatever your labors and aspirations, in the noisy confusion of life, keep peace in your soul. With all its shame, drudgery, and broken dreams, it is still a beautiful world. Be careful. Strive to be happy. We dedicate this message to those who have doubts about their lives. It shows there is hope for all of us.
