Rhetoric resigned supreme in the organization known as Debate Club. This club consisted of members who were similar only in their affection for the spoken word and their interest in the important problems of today. This year, the debates were concerned with federal government control of air and water pollution programs. At club meetings, the members gathered information, prepared cases, engaged in practice debates, and selected members for competition teams. These teams participated in various tournaments throughout the area, and in March entered the State Debate Tournament. Each morning the faculty and students of CHS were informed of club meetings and special events by one of the members of the P.A. Staff. This year the staff consisted of twelve volunteers from Mr. Herring’s 2nd hour speech class. These capable participants gained valuable experience in radio speaking, while simultaneously helping the school. Gary Kebbel makes a point in a very important debate. 'T’. f. FIRST ROW: M. The purpose of the Speech Dramatic Arts Club was to promote skill in public speaking and acting, and to further an interest in the dramatic media. The club was open to students interested in this area, and who were willing to work. SDA had several plays throughout the year and also participated in many contests. Meetings were held on the 2nd Wednesday of every month under the club’s president Nikki Ehrlich. The National Thespian Society is an honorary branch of the Speech Dramatic Arts Club. It is open to all diligent members who earn one thousand points. These points can be earned by participating in plays, including back-stage work as well as acting, and also by contest participation. In March, this honor society produced a play in the annual speech contest. The Thespians worked under the effective leadership of their president Jennifer Biondi. 'JtzifiMl FIRST ROW: D. The main projects included a visit to the science fair in St. Louis, a tour of the Science Department at SIU, tours of various water and sanitation plants, and a visit to the Edwardsville Telephone Company. Mr. Helfrich points out one of the many effects of alcohol.
