Under the supervision of sponsor, Miss Linder, and co-editors Debbie Horton and Bill Chao, this year’s staff learned the mechanics of compiling a successful yearbook and worked diligently to make it a Fine one. Projects designed to raise funds for publication included selling popcorn during lunch periods and at basketball games. Diligence and much hard work combined to provide a yearbook which the entire student body may be proud of. Organizations Co-Editor Sue Cohen looks over the finished product. 20 THE KAHOKI, the school newspaper, was composed by the students in the journalism classes and by other students who wanted to promote a better school understanding. Kim Zinke, the editor-in-chief of the KAHOKI, was assisted by its sponsor Mrs. Downing. The school and community news page was directed by Monica Brown and Marsha Fulcher. Gary Kebbel was given the task of the editorial page; while the features were done by Julie Eade and Debbie Horton. Wesley Coulson was given the job of completing the sports page of the newspaper. All of the editors and staff members spent many rewarding hours and hard work in making the 1970-71 KAHOKI a source of enjoyment for all. The Kahoki staff combines their energies to meet another publication deadline. t iU Kdkokc FIRST ROW: P. Oldani, J. Eade. D. Horton. D. Ashcroft. M. Massa. R. Chadwick, C. Terry. SECOND ROW: P. SDA President Nicki Ehrlich gives critical comment of a stage design. The purpose of the Speech Dramatic Arts Club was to promote skill in public speaking and acting, and to further an interest in the dramatic media. The club was open to students interested in this area, and who were willing to work. SDA had several plays throughout the year and also participated in many contests. Meetings were held on the 2nd Wednesday of every month under the club’s president Nikki Ehrlich. The National Thespian Society is an honorary branch of the Speech Dramatic Arts Club. It is open to all diligent members who earn one thousand points. These points can be earned by participating in plays, including back-stage work as well as acting, and also by contest participation. In March, this honor society produced a play in the annual speech contest. The Thespians worked under the effective leadership of their president Jennifer Biondi. 'JtzifiMl FIRST ROW: D. This club consisted of members who were similar only in their affection for the spoken word and their interest in the important problems of today. This year, the debates were concerned with federal government control of air and water pollution programs. At club meetings, the members gathered information, prepared cases, engaged in practice debates, and selected members for competition teams. These teams participated in various tournaments throughout the area, and in March entered the State Debate Tournament. Each morning the faculty and students of CHS were informed of club meetings and special events by one of the members of the P.A. Staff. This year the staff consisted of twelve volunteers from Mr. Herring’s 2nd hour speech class. These capable participants gained valuable experience in radio speaking, while simultaneously helping the school. Gary Kebbel makes a point in a very important debate. 'T’. f. FIRST ROW: M. Music consisted of songs from the Baroque era, as well as those copyrighted in 1970. The three major performances of the year were the Holiday Concert, a Spring concert, and to top the season the 20th Annual Variety Show, “That’s-a-nice.” Headed by a fine cast and guided very ably by the Senior Director, Caroline Lintzen-ich, the show marked another excellent, cooperative project presented by the Chorus. The Chorus also performed for a number of civic organiza- tions such as the Rotary Club, the Lions Club, and the Madison County Historical Society. Under the very capable direction of Mrs. Gibson, twelve students were chosen to participate in the Illinois Educators Concert held at SIU in Edwardsville. The major money-making project of the year was the Annual Spaghetti Supper in January. The Chorus is a group of proud students that eagerly awaited the chance to carry on the traditions of CHS and we, the faculty and students of Collinsville, are equally proud. Variety Show Chairmen—J. Princess and Chief Kahok were ever-present to lead in the victory drive. Under the direction of Mr. Neal Strebel and assistant director Mr. Edward Hayes, the members of the band rehearsed three nights a week to present five concerts, among them, the Pop and Chips Concert and a tributary concert honoring Mr. F. C. Kreider. New to the band curricula this year, students were inspired to put their creative talents to productive use as awards were presented recognizing best student composition, marching ability, individual performance, and academic abilities. To finance the band’s annual concert tour, its members worked diligently on projects including glass and paper drives, a spaghetti dinner, season ticket sales, and candy sales. Band members again augmented their musical abilities and knowledge as they provided the cooperation necessary to make this year’s band one all may be proud of. 42 FIRST ROW: J. Norcom, S. Rowe, V. Having seen other squads, the girls saw the possibility for one at CHS. Judges for the tryouts were CHS faculty, Cheer Club officers, and several students from SIU-Ed-wardsville. In November over sixty sophomore and junior girls were present at the tryouts. Only twenty-seven girls were selected to be on the precision dancing squad. Yet, the newly organized squad had to deal with the problems any new club that is creative faces. Their first performance was given on Jan. 9 during the half time of the Collinsville-Guilford game. The highlight of the season, though, was the triumph over the perennially tough Belleville West Maroons 13-12. Dave Rensing and Frank Hollingshead led the Kahoks as team Co-cap-tains, while Dave was chosen MVP for his three great seasons with the Varsity Kahoks. The Kahoks practicing long and hard. Working out on the sled prepares Kahoks for a tough season. Ben Milister gains more yardage for the Kahoks. Lloyd Dunne came to us from Ashland, Ohio where he coached football for 9 years. This was his first year at CHS and he was well liked from the start. He brought about something new at CHS, the idea of longer hair on athletes. With 3 years of coaching wrestling, and football at O’Fallon High and one year at Arkansas State University behind him, Baletti also began his first season at Collinsville this year. Collinsville’s Cross Country team started the season with a third place ranking in the Columbia Invitational, and would have continued with a better season had not Vernon Martin and Rich Vaughn, two of top runners, been injured. Jim Hahs and Allen Martin advanced to the state meet at Peoria and placed. Jim ranked 70th and Martin, a sophomore, ranked 125th, in a field of 219 runners. This year the matmen entered interscholastic competition for the first time. The wrestling Kahoks have the attitude and desire but lack the experience necessary for winning. Wrestling takes time to develop, and even if the Kahoks don’t show the wins in their first few meets of varsity, they will gain experience for wins later in the season and in the future. This is Coach Mario Baletti’s first season at CHS and his only complaint is that there are not enough boys participating. 104 Wrestling—FRONT ROW: T. Welle. L. Segobiano. R. Engel. D. Coziar, E. So far this season the Kahoks have suffered many losses due to inexperience. The team this year is made up of Juniors and Sophomores. These underclassmen do not as yet feel the confidence necessary for wins. Rich Knarr has shown great scoring ability in past games. After a short delay, student council elections began and 24 sophomores were elected to represent their class. The executive board was also elected, and thus began a merger of two distinct groups of students. As the class participated in its first homecoming, the sophomores proved their success in working together by producing a float which placed second, in the homecoming parade. Juniors-Class of ’72 The Class of ’72 can look back to a most successful Junior year. Once again, the class resumed their responsibility of combining school spirit and teamwork to construct a float for the Homecoming Parade. With fine leadership and experience, the class moved up to first place with their “President Kahok”. The teamwork, leadership, and spirit stayed with them as “King Neptune’s Court” was created. As Barcelona Brass played the tune of “Somewhere”, the elected Junior Football Maid, Kathy Hamel, and her escort, Dave Rensing, entered the King’s court. The sponsors for the Junior class were Mr. Stutts and Mr. Adams. The executive board consisted of ten students who were active, dedicated, and concerned. We owe many thanks to them for such a prosperous school year. On October 11 the class sponsored a dance at Tepee. Music was furnished by The Seven. Bake sales, car washes, and candy sales were also used as money-making projects. Candy canes were sold before Christmas to help promote spirit for the season. Another President.................Tim Thomas Vice-President............Kim Nevinger Secretary...............Carla Davisson Treasurer..................Mindy Cox dance was given on February 25; The Lyte entertained. The class took on a new outside activity. The Class of ’71 battled the Class of 72 in a most thrilling hockey match. With much enthusiasm, the excited spectators cheered the Juniors on to an expected, victorious, 10-4 decision. The Basketball Maid elected for the Junior class was Chris Condellone. She proved to be anxious and radiant while being escorted by Jeff Stephens. The dark blue in her dress highlighted the excited feeling shown in her baby-blue eyes. On April 24, the class was given the task of honoring the Class of ’71 with an elaborate prom. The music set the perfect mood for the occasion at Cheshire Inn. With such fine accomplishments, we are constantly proving that the Class of ’72 HAS got what it takes. 138 Mr. Johnston and Pat Smith entertain the class with their constant misbehavior. Tim was constantly striving to meet the interests of his fellow classmates throughout the year. Ken Horton uses the library as a source of studying??? Seniors—Class of ’71 September of 1968 saw over 600 eager sophomores enter CHS anxious for their first look at high school life. Before long the Class of ’71 had found its place in the high school community. We elected our first executive board and participated in our first Homecoming. As the year progressed we fulfilled our sophomore obligations and looked toward out next two years at CHS. As Juniors we worked to help preserve the traditions of Collinsville. In the fall our class proudly presented the Football Coronation in the enchanted land of Camelot and in the spring, hard work transformed Fischer’s Restaurant into Scarborough Fair for the Junior-Senior Prom. Finally we were the big chiefs at CHS, the top of the Kahok totem pole. From seeing Janie Lochmann reign as our lovely Homecoming Queen to having our Executive Board’s efforts pay off in a perfect Senior Assembly, we were proud of our class and our place at CHS. Though we are leaving CHS we know CHS will never leave us. In three years CHS has become a part of our lives never to be forgotten. President .... Scott Greaves Vice-President.............. Not only for what You have made of yourself, But for what You are making of me. I love you For the part of me That you bring out; I love you For putting your hand Into my heaped-up heart And passing over All the foolish, weak, things That you can’t help Dimly seeing there. And for drawing out Into the light All the beautiful belongings That no one else had looked Quite far enough to find. I love you because you Are helping me to make Of the lumber of my life Not a tavern But a temple Out of the works Of my every day Not a reproach But a song. I love you Because you have done More than any creed Could have done To make me good, And more than any fate Could have done To make me happy. You have done it Without a touch. Without a word, Without a sign. You have done it By being yourself. Perhaps that is what Being a friend means, After all. White lace and promises, A kiss for luck, and we’re on our way. We’ve only begun Before the rising sun. We fly. So many roads to choose. We start off walking and learn to run And, yes, we’ve just begun . . . Sharing horizons that are new to us. Watching the signs along the way. Talking it over just the two of us. Working together day by day—together. And when the evening comes, We smile. So much of life ahead. We’ll find a place where there’s room to grow. And, yes, we’ve just begun . . . Paul Williams There is an overwhelming feeling of inadequacy when trying to use words to express exactly what the 1971 Kahokian has meant and been to us: a source of pride, a cause of frustration, a goal to reach, a duty that “had to be done’’, a reason for lost sleep, and a beginning of new friendships. More than these, though, the Kahokian has become a part of our lives. This book is the aggregate of the dedication and work of many persons. The Kahokian staff has shown this through their unlimited drive and willingness to work. Miss Linder, our sponsor, has been wonderful for her patience in guiding us to produce the book as we wanted it. Ralph Haury manifested his concern for the Kahokian through countless hours of taking and developing pictures for it. Without his help, the book would not have been possible. We would like to extend our gratitude to each of these persons for all they have done. The summation of the work of all these people is now yours. May the 1971 Kahokian help you to recall your year at CHS—the people, the events, and the places—because only if this book is important to you have we been a success. 201 Debbie Horton Bill Chao Senior Activities ADAMS.
