COLLINSVILLE HIGH SCHOOL Collinsville, Illinois Volume 43 Kahokian 1970 Editor-in-chief Brenda Updike table of contents features..................14 personnel.................32 organizations.............50 athletics.................74 classes...................94 Various Activities Are Seen At CHS Portables give a different perspective of CHS. Marching, uniforms, and ROTC are all new to CHS this year. A string of busses lining up during seventh hour is a familiar scene students welcome. Collinsville High School - HOMl i------------------1-----------------r 1 KAHOKS—A word full of pride for Collinsville. The cheerleaders go through many drills in order to perform their mounts. Sophomore. Peggy O'Donnell finds the Student Council bookstore a good place to buy school supplies. 6 Popcorn is being prepared by Karen Lane and Ruth Spencer for lunch periods. 7 A composite picture made by the summer seminar art students is displayed in the library. The CHS band performs various formations during half time shows. The Kahok football team plans to “block that kick of the Tigers. Installation of new fire doors reaches completion. Tim Thomas and Kevin Kingsbury work diligently during chem lab. Junior girls scramble to get control of the ball in a speedball game. n A Different View Of CHS The arm of the law directs traffic before and after school. A new dimension to the Kahok Athletic Department? The administration has a lot of sole. With so many early dismissals and excuses some teachers and students lend a hand in the office. Overcrowded conditions show piled clothes in the girls’ dressing room. Senior Ross Gentile gives another skit for the morning bulletin. Vocational classes train boys for their future careers. 13 “The Odd Couple99 Presented by Speech Department Two British charmers help to complicate matters in the play. Senior Bill Thomas looks on as the rest of the guys play poker. “The Odd Couple deals with the problems of two men, one who is divorced, careless, and easy-going— the other an overly-fastidious, compulsively neat fellow who has been thrown out of his home by his wife. Oscar Madison was portrayed by Jeff Rinehart and Felix Ungar was played by Bill Thomas. Both live a precarious sort of life in an eight-room apartment in Collinsville. During the course of the evening, both begin to unravel the true reasons for having failed at marriage and try to figure out a way to get back with their respective mates. First Musical Presented by CHS My Fair Lady is a story of a Cockney flower girl, Eliza Doolittle. Henry Higgins, a phonetics expert, tells her that he and Colonel Pickering can teach her to speak like a lady. Eliza appears at the professor's home and diction begins. Higgins, however, becomes so exasperated with his pupil's Cockney mannerisms and moralities that he nearly gives up. There is a day when Eliza triumphantly learns correct pronunciation. Eliza cannot sleep that night because she is so exhilarated. In a box at the Ascot Races, Higgins introduces Eliza to society for the first time. Attracted to her immediately is Freddy Enysford-Hill, who follows her home hoping to see her again. Eliza, after months of hard work, is now ready for the big experiment—an appearance at a gala embassy ball. Meantime, Eliza’s father has become rich and is forced to respectfully marry the woman he has been romancing for years. Awakening in the morning, Higgins finds Eliza has departed and snaps on the frailties of women. He is sitting in his study deeply engrossed in recordings of Eliza’s voice, when Eliza quietly enters. Eliza has come back; and this time, we suspect, to stay. Jennifer Biondi portrays Eliza Doolittle, a Cockney flower girl. Prof. Henry Higgins, a phonetics expert, is played by Gary Swalley. The beginning of the end of scenes like this. At Last— Groundbreaking 1969 New High School Academic Building. Seniors.. . Sophomores. .. 19 and organizations begin float construction. Student Council Initiates Pep Week A new addition to Pep Week was the Snake Dance. Everyone hopes for a victory. Cheerleaders set the mood at the bonfire. 22 23 The 1969-1970 Homecoming Coronation 1969 CORONATION COURT: Tom Capstick, Kathy Ganninger; Bo Kelly, Carol Hoag; John Prater, Carol Loyet; Mark Dawkins, Jo Carole Kennedy; Gary Webb, Kathie Wittmann. 24 A courtly bow by the 1969 Homecoming Queen. Don’t let it be forgot that once there was a spot for one brief shining moment that was known as Camelot. Lerner and Lowe 25 Kahok fans are elated at their first touch-down. Powder puff cheerleaders provide half-time antics. The ref untangles the group. The traditional demolition. 27 Sophomore Maid Junior Maid Kathie descends into a graceful bow. The sophomores selected Kathie Wittmann as their first football Coronation Maid. Kathie wore a pink satin formal and selected Somewhere My Love” as her entrance song. Her escort was Gary Webb. Kathie is a member of Student Council, Cheer Club and Cheer Bloc and served as treasurer of her class. Kathie also had the honor of representing her Freshman Class as a basketball maid. Kathie was a charming final touch to the 1969-70 Football Queen and her court. A dream come true could very well express the thoughts of the Junior Coronation Maid, Carol Hoag, as she entered the enchanted kingdom of “Camelotconstructed by her class. Carol selected The Impossible Dream for her song arid an aqua formal. Carol is a Student Council representative and previously served as secretary and treasurer of Art Club. She also had the honor of representing her Sophomore Class as last year’s basketball maid. Carol and her escort, Bo Kelly, share a happy moment. Special Maid Retiring Queen Mark Dawkins looks on as Jo begins her bow. The very vivacious Jo Carol Kennedy was selected by the Senior Class to reign as their Special Maid. Jo Carol selected “Misty” as her entrance tune and a royal formal of purple velvet. Jo has been active as a cheerleader throughout high school and served as co-captain of this year's cheerleading squad. Jo will always remain the very “special girl to the class of '70. The Retiring Queen, Kathie Gann-inger, selected as her entrance song the theme from “Camelot ,” “If Ever I Would Leave You.” She was escorted by senior letterman, Tom Cap-stick. Kathie wore a sage green formal trimmed with ruffles of silk and sparkled with gold sequins. As she gracefully bowed in the final moments of her reign, Kathie reflected the qualities of a truly gracious queen. The Kahokian staff is composed of dedicated students who are responsible for the circulation, publication, and distribution of the yearbook. New to this organization is the sponsor, Mrs. Lindsey. She supervised the staff members and helped with the mechanics of the yearbook. This year the Kahokian staff earned money for their expenses by selling popcorn during the lunch periods and at the basketball games. A new project was selling mums at the Homecoming football game. All editors and staff members worked their hardest to make the yearbook a lasting memory for the student body. The Kahoki, CHS’s four-page student newspaper, was the result of the combined efforts of its staff and two journalism classes. Sponsored by Miss Funkhouser and under the direction of Editor-in-chief Randy Splaingard, the Kahoki was a full-time job for those responsible for it. In charge of reporting school and community news were page one editors Carol Loyet and Jeanne Carlton; Kathe Anderson and Mark Neubauer produced page two’s editorial content; Shelle Condellone, Maxine McKenzie, and Wanda Gooch were given the task of featuring page three’s special articles; and Jennifer Luner, Paul Gattung, and Steve Barbee directed Sports coverage for page four. It was a never-ending devotion of the newspaper’s reporters, photographers, editors, and sponsor to the Kahoki, which made it an award-winning publication. 52 FHA—FRONT ROW: D. Edwards, D. Miller, D. Johnson, Pres. BACK ROW: S. Grooms, M. Wilhem. S. Ried, I. Elbe. The only home economics organization of its kind is FHA. Mrs. Barbara Crouch, the sponsor, meets with the girls once a month in the home economic rooms. Cookbooks, compiled by home economic teachers were sold, and sales were held to finance field trips. NATIONAL HONOR SOCIETY—three very special words that command respect and pride for CHS. Membership is allowed yearly by the selection of five percent of the junior class and ten percent of the senior class. To qualify these students must maintain a three point current and three point cummulative average. They are also judged by the faculty on character, leadership, and service. The traditional activities are, managing the paperback book store, decorating the new annex during the Christmas season, posting the honor roll every six weeks, and operating the coat checkroom at the basketball games. The organization also fostered an underprivileged child. It was hoped by all members that this would become an annual project. NHS—FRONT ROW: C. Leiner, G. Hausman, S. Keller. Sec y; J. Prater, V. To become members, the boys have to merit a letter and meet the approval of all present club members and sponsor. They are also required to demonstrate good character and good sportsmanship among their fellow students and opponents. In order to make money, the members sell programs at football and basketball games. The boys also serve as honorary escorts at the annual football coronation. The club sponsor was Coach Fletcher. Under the direction of Miss Frueh, Hi-Tri’s purpose was to help each girl win her,way to unselfish success. The club tried to help all members attain a character that was strong, unselfish, and true. Visitations of nursing homes and orphanages, state conferences, the Faculty Christmas Tea, and the annual Mother-Daughter Banquet were just a few of Hi-Tri’s successful activities. Character, friendship, courtesy, pleasure and success were the goals by which Hi-Tri worked. Hi-TRI—FRONT ROW: D. Rosen, J. Garcia, Treas.; J. Foley, Sec'y.; J. Merchut, Pres.; R. Knecht, V. In addition to the announcements of club meetings, they presented skits to publicize various products being sold or special events. Only speech contest winners and officers of the speech clubs could be on the P.A. Staff. Voices of the Debate Club members once again echoed in the halls of CHS. This year the club members met in room 218 every other Tuesday with their sponsor, Mrs. Betty Reed. Here they practiced their speeches and debates which were presented at the various tournaments throughout the year. The CHS debate club was represented at the SIU Tournament in Carbondale, the Belleville Invitational, to name only a few. FTA also sold sweatshirts with the CHS emblem to all loyal Kahok fans. Besides substituting for absent teachers and aiding in the primary schools, FT A members graded papers for teachers and assisted the teachers’ aides in their duties. Miss Kuncl was the club’s sponsor. Fairly new to CHS, College Club began its second year under the direction of Miss Linder. The purpose of this club is to keep students informed about scholarships, testing programs, college curriculums, procedures for college application, and activities of local colleges. FBLA attempts to aid all students interested in the business field by helping them choose occupations for which they are best suited. FBLA sponsored a cake sale, and other bake sales throughout the year. At Thanksgiving and at Christmas, members prepared a basket of canned goods for a needy family. Members were informed about the business world by speakers and the Business and Professional Women’s Club. FBLA members attended the Southwest Area Conference in Alton and the state convention in Springfield. The club’s goal is for some members to attend the national convention in June. The Future Nurses Club was organized by Miss Best to help stimulate interest in the medical field. Their many activities included two tours to neighboring hospitals and having guest speakers at their meetings. Money-making projects for this year were selling kleenex and calendars and an annual bake sale. The club also helped provide scholarships for outstanding members interested in entering the medical field. 57 Perfection in Graphic Communications Clubs9 Goal CAMERA CLUB—FRONT ROW: T. Besides taking care of the projectors, recorders, and phonographs, the students assisted their fellow students with the new wireless listening system. Students were able to make up assignments and tests in the library because many teachers put original material on tapes. Sponsored by Mr. Edwards, Camera Club’s purposes are to provide a training ground in darkroom procedures for new members, further an interest in photography, and give experienced members tips on cameras and printing processes. Membership was open to all camera enthusiasts. New members learned the proper use of photographic equipment by taking and processing their own pictures. Experienced members were allowed to take and print photos for the Kahoki, Ka-hokian, and CHS News Bureau. 58 OFFICE AIDES—FRONT ROW: M. Evanoff. J. Earthal, J. Kennedy, S. Barillaro. D. Brada. A. The jobs of office-aides are many and varied. These students, who sacrifice their study halls, become regular “Girl Fridays” to office workers and teachers. They not only answer phones, but run errands. Mr. Paul presents them with a list of seven rules which they are expected to follow. For their workt office-aides receive much valuable experience. Did you hear an explosion? If it was the second or fourth Tuesday of the month, it may have been the Science Club hard at work, under the direction of Mr. Heberer. The energetic members carried out experiments usually not done in class. The problem was getting things set up and having them work. Main projects included attendance at a science fair in St. Louis, a tour of the Science Department at SIU, water and sanitation plants, and the Edwardsville Telephone Company. They also entertained guest speakers throughout the year. SCIENCE CLUB—FRONT ROW: D. Shadowen. C. Hoskins, Treas.; A. Brown, Sec’y '. Mr. Heberer, Sponsor; N. Greaves, J. Taylor. BACK ROW: C. Once a month the future Van Gogh’s or Da Vinci’s gathered to discuss and organize the yearly agenda of Art Club. Officers were elected in the beginning of the year and construction of a float for homecoming began immediately. The desire to learn about Germany led many students to the fun-filled, but educational German Club meetings. Starting its second year, the members played new and exciting card games, enjoyed a picnic, attended the annual Christmas Banquet, and listened to German music played by their own German band. Membership, however, was open to anyone interested. Members were responsible for passing out library cards at the beginning of the year and collecting them at the end of the term. Class pins and bumper stickers were sold to finance their trip to the Washington University Library. At the annual spring banquet the new officers were installed and merit certificates were awarded. The institution of the ROTC program brought about an interest in Ham Radio and a Ham Radio Club at CHS this year. Many requirements must be met in order to obtain an operator’s license. One of the purposes of the club was to aid students in completing these requirements. Original equipment was supplied by Dave Schroeder and Bob Franklin. Classes in Morse code and basic radio theory were taught and it was hoped that the club would eventually operate its own radio station at CHS. The club was under the direction of Lt. Col. Cheer Club and Cheer Block are composed of loyal Kahok fans who wish to promote school spirit and support our school's athletic events. Kahok Letter-Men were honored at the annual Letter-Men’s banquet given by Cheer Club. At this time each player was presented with a scrapbook honoring him. Cheer Club activities for the year were selling candy apples, booster badges, and purple and white balloons at the football games. Most members of Cheer Club were also members of Cheer Block, whose managers were Anne Jackstadt and Bev Fraley. One of the honors bestowed upon a junior or senior girl was being selected as a PE Student Leader. Of the many girls who sign up only twenty-six are chosen. Usually these girls display qualities of leadership and athletic ability. Duties of a Student Leader are many and varied. She takes roll, leads exercises and helps the Physical Education teachers in whatever way possible. The majority of the PE Student Leaders are seniors, but any girl selected in her junior year is automatically a Student Leader in her senior year. In the fall new members were initiated, officers were installed, and the year’s plans were outlined. Once again loyal club members marched in the Homecoming parade with their Roman chariot and ponies under the sign “Victoria”. The main money making project of the year was the sale of Kahok pencils. They also had a bake sale. The year was concluded with the annual Roman banquet, where members dressed in Roman garb, ate Roman food, and presented an original Roman play. The Spanish Club, whose purpose is to further an interest in Spanish culture and the language itself, was one of the many fine clubs at CHS this past year. The club’s activities included a field trip to the Spanish Pavilion, a Christmas dinner, and many interesting films at their meetings. As fund raising projects the members sold Halloween candy, Christmas tie-on cards for decorating packages, and language grammar charts. 64 CHESS CLUB—FRONT ROW: J. An award was made at the end of the year, to the winner of the club tournament. Mr. William Nunes was the sponsor. This past year many students gave up a lunch study hall in service to their fellow students as Noon Workers. The Noon Workers under the direction of their sponsor Mrs. Ruth Richer provided the lunches of the students and faculty of CHS. Their numerous jobs included: cashiering, filling plates, working at the snack bar, and cleaning the utensils used. Mu Alpha Theta is a national mathematics honor society. This past year MAS sent nine students to participate in a math festival at SIU. At the annual weiner roast the pledges were informally initiated into the club. The club had a tea at Christmas. At the end of the year the annual banquet was held at which time the pledges finally became members. New officers were installed for the coming year. Mr. Richard Crabtree was the club’s sponsor. The National Thespian Society is an honor society for dedicated Speech Dramatic Arts Club members who earn one thousand points. This year the Thespian play was “The Odd Couple”. Members are not only actors and actresses, but also dedicated dancers, house managers, lighting technicians, as well as “jacks of all trades” who help in producing a successful play. In connection with the International Society they produced a play in the annual speech contests. The activities of the Speech Dramatic Arts Club got quickly under way with the fine leadership of its officers. With Mr. Herring as sponsor, the club presented such productions as “The Odd Couple”, and “My Fair Lady”, its first musical. Other activities were, the spring, and Speech III play, along with the one-act plays presented by Speech I students. Members also participated in the local, district, and state speech contests. National Forensic League was established as a national honor society for any exceptionally good debater or public speaker. To become a member, one has to work extremely hard and earn twenty-five points. Jackie Reese, senior, was the only CHS student to earn this distinct honor in the 1969-1970 school year. 66 SDA Offers Students Opportunity for Expression THESPIANS—FRONT ROW: J. Carlton, L. In November, January, and March an advanced choral ensemble represented CHS in District Six, the All-State Music Festivals, and the MENC meeting in Chicago. During the year, the chorus presented an inspiring Christmas concert and traditionally carolled in the halls of CHS, sang a festive spring concert, made numerous appearances for civic organizations, and honored the graduating seniors by singing two requested numbers. One of the major money-making projects for Chorus was the annual spaghetti dinner in January. A year’s work on the nineteenth annual variety show, “Amo Amasha”, (“Love Amasha”) came to a gratifying and successful conclusion May first and second for an audience of over one thousand under the direction of Gary Swalley. Under new direction many changes were made. Among these changes was a change in curriculum. Music theory was taught this year for the first time by Mr. Ed Hayes, assistant director. The members of the Collinsville Kahok band were constantly boosting Kahok spirit both by day and by night. During the day, the band provided the music to rouse the spirits of the student body at pep assemblies. By night the flame of the fire hoop lighted the path of victory at the football and basketball games as the band played our own “Indian Trail . Many new things were introduced as well as old things carried on by the 1969 band. The band learned and presented a new style of marching at this season’s football games. The usual five concerts were presented to the public. This year’s money raising projects included: season ticket sales, paper drives, the annual spaghetti dinner, and candy sales. Described by Mr. Strebel as “an academic subject as well as a team effort’’ in which “the individual must strive to help the team endeavor The band went beyond its usual success in this year’s activities. Instructed by Jane Pfaff, they lead the crowd at varsity sports events. Their job requires not only enthusiasm but skill and training also. Last summer the girls traveled to Hartland, Michigan, to participate in the United States Cheerleaders Association All-American Camp. Although they were the only out of state group and accustomed to a different style of cheerleading, they returned with a fourth-place ribbon for their delivery of For the Purple . The girls earned not only a prize but also a host of new cheers and morale boosters for the entire Ka-hok delegation to share. 93 EXECUTIVE BOARD—SEATED: Cindy Osborn. Carla Davisson. Elaine French. For these students, Orientation Day introduced them to the hectic rat race at C.H.S. Sophomore football games and Student Council elections started the class on the road to a successful year. The election of the Executive Board ended in an unusual manner. The fact that the board consisted of ten girls made no difference when work began. The project that started the year was to begin the class’s first Homecoming float. With much work and enthusiasm, the float finished second, the only class to place. In the fall of 1969, a new class of jolly juniors once again entered the doors of CHS. A little more confident than the year before, they came with hopes that had started to mold. As students their knowledge had increased and would continue to grow. As people they had gained valuable experiences, and they had matured as the eyes of their families watched. With unusual team work, the juniors continued to try to raise enough money to support their class functions. Bake sales were frequent. New projects were introduced, such as selling Christmas decorations. Through determination and the help of loyal classmates, the treasury grew. “Camelot’’ was reproduced by the class of ’71 for the football Coronation. When their football maid, Carol Hoag, walked over the drawbridge the homecoming was complete. The work did not end there, for there was a prom to organize. As their senior year comes to a nostalgic end the honor and prestige of the senior class is preserved in the memories of us all. One reason for the success of the graduating class was their dedicated executive board. The board was elected by the class to plan class projects and serve at all class functions. The board consisted of members who represented the interest and concern of their fellow students. At the close of the senior year, the executive board presented the annual senior assembly, highlighting their three years at CHS, and the class gift before the student body. Sponsors of the senior class were Mr. Crabtree and Mr. Nunes. Both the sponsors and the board should be commended for their devotion and efforts to the class of ’70. Senior class executive board members select new graduation announcements. 138 Lt. Gov. Paul Simon speaks to Brenda Updike and Carol Loyet at Youth World. SIU Carbondale. John Prater finds the library a quiet place to read. Three years quickly pass, and soon the class of '70 will be a memory of the past and undoubtedly an inspiration to the future senior classes at CHS. From sophomores to juniors and finally seniors, the goal of each student was obtained. The senior year is perhaps the most memorable, but for the class of ’70 each year at CHS holds its dreams and memories. As sophomores, we strived for perfection, and with great pride we captured first prize in our first Homecoming Parade. Our truly active junior year began with the preparation of our Coronation. The enchantment of our “Fantasyland will always remain a momentous achievement to our class. In the following spring our class once again combined its talents and energies to present a captivating prom, “Night in Paris”. At the close of our junior year, we had achieved the title . . . seniors. As we entered our last school year, we desired to capture and enrich each memory of the passing days. We strived to achieve the best. We demonstrated the pride and honor of being a senior to our underclassmen. As we leave the halls of CHS, we abandon the awakening year of a sophomore, the active year of a junior, and the unforgettable year of a senior. We leave our dreams and memories as echos of the past, and strive to become the minds of those who enrich tomorrow. In the words of Lyndon Baines Johnson, “The torch is passed” Seniors relax under the shade of the trees during restricted seventh hour. 139 Mark Abbott Denise Ackerman Cindy Albaugh Danny Allison Judy Althardt Cindy Ambrosius Kathy Anderson Orville Ankarlo Tom Ashcroft John Baczewski Connie Baker Gary Baker Pat Baker Steve Barbee Joyce Barcliff Shelley Barillaro Deborah Barker Bob Barton Karlee Bates Judy Bauer 140 Terry Bazzell Debbie Beeler Linda Belobraydic Gordon Bennett Lynn Bielaczyc Jim Bieser Tamara Bigham Jeff Biondi Jeanne Blair Kenny Blumberg Don Boeger Bev Boehm Esther Boehnke Gary Bohn Kathie Bouse Steve Bovinett Glenda Bowen Denise Brada Paula Brammeier Kevin Brennan Nancy Brewster Kenneth Brinker Carol Brown Jerry Brown Richard Brown Kim Brunworth James Bryant Larry Budwell Linda Burkett Glen Burr Toni Caffrey Autumn Call Kenny Campbell Tom Capstick Jeanne Carlton Donna Carman Ron Carter Rick Casebolt 142 3a for study and research. TV MEMORIAM Mrs. Pauline Deason October 23,1913 to May 13,1969 Mrs. Deason was a dedicated teacher of Comparative Literature and English III, active sponsor of National Honor Society for the past six years and charter member of the Collinsville Federation of Teachers. May Mrs. Pauline Deason serve as an inspiration to all those who desire to enrich the field of education. For Mrs. Deason shall always live—she shall live in the hearts of her students for whom she devoted her life. So live, that when thy summons comes to join The innumerable caravan, which moves To that mysterious realm where each shall take His chamber in the silent halls of death, Thou go not, like the quarry slave at night, Scourged to his dungeon, but, sustained and soothed By an unfaltering trust, approach thy grave, Like one who wraps the drapery of his couch About him, and lies down to pleasant dreams. from Thanatopsis William Cullen Bryant 167 Paula Gillespey Mick Gnavi Sue Keller Gary Swalley Brenda Updike Pam Wiehardt 169 1970 KAHOKIAN STAFF EDITOR-IN-CHIEF Brenda Updike SPONSOR Mrs. Carolyn Lindsey SENIOR EDITORS Jill Harrold Carl Leiner JUNIOR EDITORS Jean Kramer Nancy Roberts SOPHOMORE EDITORS Elaine French Kathie Wittman FEATURE EDITOR Kris LaSurs ORGANIZATION EDITOR Debbie Horton Nancy Owen ORGANIZATION STAFF Karen Bingaman Amanda Brown Sue Lane Joanna Norcom Jackie Reece Randy Splaingard SPORTS EDITOR Bill Chao SPORTS STAFF Barb Brittin Cindy Smith COPY EDITOR Gary Swalley CONCESSION MANAGER Gail Richter BUSINESS MANAGER Joe Sackett SALES MANAGERS Susan Burroughs Julie Eade TYPISTS Janice Benesh Autumn Call Jim Kruta Carol Mueth Pat Pitra Randy Splaingard Jan Taylor Jeff Taylor PHOTOGRAPHERS Randy Smith Alan Valenti STAFF Carla Davisson Nancy Knecht Ruth Knecht Loretta Kopecki Karen Lane Lulie Lovin Al Marchaindo Connie Osborn Peggy O’Donnell Debbie Rosetto Ellen Schoreack Carol Sekosky Stefanie Shup Ruth Spencer Pam Wagner Paula Wyatt Completion of the Kahokian could not have been achieved without the photography of Ralph Haury and the assistance of the Inter-Collegiate Press representative, Bud Kritner. Much appreciation goes to the advisor, Mrs. Carolyn Lindsey for her tolerance and guidance acknowledgement is extended to the administration, faculty, and students: without you there would be only blank pages. There’ll be a time, when we shall come returning Bowed with the years, but with a heart as free, Back to the hallowed home of our first learning, Even as we Leave her today and find the young heart yearning For our own school, and all that used to be.
