Behind their president, Dr. M. W. Grimm, members of the board work diligently toward improving the educational facilities and deciding on matters of policy for the Collinsville school system. The Superintendent of Schools, Mr. D. K. Darling, and Asst. Superintendent, Mr. Dallas Harrell, meet with the board and help establish a closer bond between the people and the school system itself. Dr. M. W. Grimm Mr. D. K. Darling Mr. Dallas Harrell STANDING: Mr. Wall, Mr. Dougherty. SEATED: Mr. Blumberg, Mr. Bitzer, Dr. Grimm, Mr. Richter, Mrs. Cole. SUPERVISION . . . Mr. Fred A. Riddle has won the respect and admiration of the student body as principal of our school. His careful supervision of business matters and his coordination of faculty and student body affairs were clearly exemplified in the school's many accomplishments this year. Principal - Mr. Riddle COORDINATION INTEREST One of the busiest men at C.H.S. is the Assistant Principal, Mr. Paul. Taking on a new job this year, he worked hard, assuming the chief duties in the principal's absence, handling discipline problems, and keeping a close check on absenteeism and tardiness. Vice-Principal Mr. Paul Mr. Pirtle, our curriculum coordinator, handles all phases of the curriculum at the secondary level. Through careful study, he is able to suggest to the teachers many new and useful textbooks and visual aids available in their particular departments. Mr. Pirtle GUIDANCE COUNSELS ON PROBLEMS Miss Linder The guidance staff assumes the responsibility of helping students solve the multiple problems they encounter from day to day. They combine their patience and understanding in dealing with any situation. Mrs. Rosemary McConkey, Mr. Harry Dearworth, and Mr. Edmund Phelps, sophomore, junior, and senior advisors respectively, guide students in planning their schedules and offer advice on vocational problems. A new position this year, college consultant, was taken on by Miss Margaret Linder. She keeps students well informed on all up-coming tests and provides information needed for entering college. Mr. Phelps 24 AND FUTURE Mr. Dearworth 25 ENGLISH TAUGHT AS PREREQUISITE English is probably the most well-known of all departments. CHS English department boasts an excellent curriculum for students. Courses the first three years deal mainly with literature and grammar. The fourth year is an elective-choice between college preparatory and business English. Along with these, a new advanced senior course has been added this year called comparative literature. Students and faculty both agree that it is a fine introduction to college literature. f Mr. Ams Miss Kirsch FOR TOMORROW Miss Meyer Mr. Rhodes 27 cK T £S WITH FOREIGN LANDS Four year Latin and Spanish courses are included n the Foreign anguage department. Latin I and ti provide a Sasic understanding of both the language and the customs of the ancient Romans. The third and Fourth year students, under the able guidance oF Mrs. Dorothy Koelling, study advanced translations. Spanish, representing the modern languages, is taught by Mrs. Trudi Monroe and Mrs. SoFia Clark. Students concentrate mainly on the conversational phases in the First and second years. Spanish 111 and IV are studies in depth oF the literature oF the Spanish lands. Mrs. Koelling Mr. Lambird MATH TEACHERS STIMULATE LOGICAL THINKING A variety of courses are available in the CHS math department. Offerings included ore practical math. Algebra I and II, and plane geometry. Senior math is a combined course of solid geometry, trigonometry, and calculus. Whether the student is college bound or plans to begin his career after graduation, this four year math program prepores him for any endeavor. 29 Mr. Gericke Mrs. Nicol SOCIAL SCIENCE MOLDS The social science division, one of the most valuable of all the departments, helps prepare the student for the future and make him more aware of world problems. Contemporary Thought, a most enlightening course recently added to the curriculum, is offered to seniors interested in learning the principles of communism, democracy, and world religions. Mr. Wallen Mrs. Skaggs ■I mm Mr. Heberer Mr. Determan CHALLENGE RESEARCH . . . DISCOVERY Students at CHS are very fortunate in having a well-rounded natural science program. A basic understanding of life is necessary in a modern world. The science instructors at CHS endeavor to prepare their students for the challenge that lies ahead. Through research on the secondary level, the student may reach the greater heights of discovery in his chosen field. Courses offered this year to broaden the students' knowledge were Biology I and II, Chemistry I and II, and physics. 32 Mr. Pickett LIBRARY-WHERE THE ANSWERS LIE The newly renovated library was efficiently tended by CHS's librarian Mr. Charles Pickett. With the help of his student librarians, Mr. Pickett keeps our shelves well-stocked with a large supply of books, periodicals, and other supplementary materials. BUSINESS ED. PREPARES STUDENT Teachers in the business education department assume the responsibility of preparing the student in the field of commerce. With courses such as typing, shorthand, general business, and office machines available, a solid background may be developed here in the high school years. Mr. Dusek FOR COMMERCE FIELD Mr. Cole 36 PRACTICAL VOCATIONAL GUIDANCE Important to our daily living are the skills taught to us in the vocational department. Such courses as cooking, sewing, and wood and metal working are included in the curriculum. Through the instructors' patience and careful guidance, CHS students gain practical experience that will be ever valuable. Mr. Deason Mr. DeChiara 37 DRIVERS' ED: SAFETY AND SKILL Rules of the rood and safe driving habits are among the important points stressed in drivers' education. Because of its importance, the course is required of all sophomores and offered to any other students interested. It may truly be said that CHS makes every effort to promote safe and careful driving among the student body. Mr. Reed Mr. Stone Mr. Brick Mrs. Gibson CULTURE DEVELOPED THROUGH THE ARTS The instructors in the fine arts department are truly a devoted group. Each member works industriously in his or her respective division, bringing much praise to CHS. Students are able to perform their talents in art, bond, chorus, and speech. Creative writing, offered for the journalistic-minded student, is proficiently taught by Miss Irene Meyer. Mrs. Sherer Mrs. Pirtle Mr. Herring ■ 3fc3t FUN, FITNESS, FUNDAMENTALS The PE program at CHS is centered around increasing physical agility, teaching the rules of the game, the necessity of teamwork, and good sportsmanship. Our instructors work hard in planning various activities throughout the year to maintain the students' interest and fulfill the requirements for physical fitness. Mr. Fletcher FIRST AID GIVEN WITH A SMILE First aid or services needed for any other emergency are always carefully handled by Miss Geraldine Best, our school nurse, and Mrs. Eva Ray, matron. Both ladies are patient, kind, and always willing to lend a helping hand. Miss Best I Mrs. Ray Hilda Pinkel Jeanne Gericke DEXTERITY IN DAILY DUTY The office staff is a group of devoted and industrious workers. Van Haaften manages the lunch program for the entire school district. He carefully plans the meals to provide the students with a well-balanced, nutritional meal each day. CONJURE CHS NOURISHMENT FEATURES THE NEVER-CHANGING TRADITIONS Homecoming Chairmen at work. What is Homecoming? Ideas broadened by anxiety, anticipation, and devotion . . . plans accomplished because of pride of tradition . . . boisterous laughter, spirited cheers, joyous tears ... the crackling bonfire. Homecoming is our Kahok team fighting for glory . . . and, in reality, the final score is unimportant to victory. Some glow from some place ... an expression of pride . . . produces a responding smile . . . the warmth spreads. Soon Homecoming is a treasury of golden memories to be cherished always. There's no reason to worry about incidental disappointments . . . moments of ecstasy last forever. Homecoming is the Queen and Her Court . .. radiant faces and butterflies hidden inside. SPORTS CROSS COUNTRY RUNNERS BOLSTER PRIDE OF KAHOK FANS Although their faces change through the years, Kahoks are known for their running miles and miles to victory; but our cross country team does so in the literal sense of the word. Winning four meets and losing two, they combined the sweat, grueling hours of training and the able coaching of their headman, Clifford Proffer. The result was a very fine team of Kahoks which CHS is proud to call theirs. The captain of the varsity runners was Paul Smith, a two-year letterman. JV's had as their leader Eric Schultz. TEAM PROVIDES ACTION The Kahok football team of 64-65 made the face of CHS proud. The team, as a whole, showed much effort and athletic prowess. This is proven in the impressive record of 5 wins, 2 losses, and 2 ties, one of these ties being with the top rated team on the St. Louis side of ♦he river. This year's team, a group of determined fighters, had one of its greatest moments in the upset victory against Granite City. Weekly awards were given to the defensive and offensive players of the week. This recognition came to many boys, showing our team to be well-balanced. Hard work, strain, and stamina proved to be the winning formula for the Mighty Kahok football team. Albert Ackerman, Downfield Blocker of the Year. Their enterprising attitude toward winning was demonstrated in game after game. This team, future varsity gridders, showed much dexterity in handling the ball. They played arduous games and proved themselves true to the purple-and-white. Most Valuable JV Football Player, Stan Baczewski. MANAGERS, COACHES-BACKBONE OF TEAM Coach Vergil Fletcher, Coach Don Davisson, and Coach Frank Pitol produced a football team built on extensive training and strenuous scrimmage. These three coaches worked with the team in order to perfect the boys' ball handling and passing, their blocking and tackling. It is quite evident that they succeeded in their purpose —for the Kahok gridders came in third in the Southwestern Conference. The hustling, able managers of this year's football team were Rich Lyons, Terry Biegert, and Tom Noascono. They kept the team at its best by constantly being where they should and doing what they could- These three boys enabled the football team to obtain and sustain high spirits and loyal feelings. Truly they aided in the success of the football team, a vital part of the everchanging face of CHS. Mr. Pitol. Mr. Fletcher. 77 T- Bieger,. R. Lyons, T NoQJCOno CHS CAGERS AND KAHOK FANS PRACTICE, PROFICIENCY, PRESTIGE Some new faces have come into Collinsville High's basketball ring — sophomores and juniors. These, the Jayvees, arduously train for the day when they too will add prestige to the established name, KAHOKS! Under the proficient guidance of Coach Frank Pitol, Jayvees learn just how all Kahoks earn their prowess: sweating, practicing hour upon hour, and leaping beyond the limits to promote the name of Kahoks even higher in the ranks. KNEEL- ING: Mr. Fletcher, Mr. Pitol. BASKETBALL KAHOKS AUGMENT CHS PRESTIGE The first practice for the 1964-65 varsity basketball squad was called by Coach Fletcher during the early days of October. After much consideration and deliberation, an outstanding team was picked. With the returning lettermen and the equally good newcomers, the Kahoks worked their way toward victory again and again. Ardent fans realized that this year's basketball squad was a team to be followed. The games these boys played were exciting and surprising. The never-changing basketball face of CHS was once again held high as our Varsity Kahok Basketball Team won games, prestige, and honor. Rich Lyons, Tom Nooscono, Frank Mitchell. BEHIND THE BACKBOARD WITH THE TEAM The faces of the behind-the-scenes team the managers, do change, but the spirit surely does not. As the on-scene squad is racking up another Kahok victory, these managers seem to lead a fairly leisurely life. Actually this is not the case. They are, along with the coaches, the men behind the men, ready to fill whatever capacity is required. The responsible team of managers for basketball '64-'65 were Rich Lyons, Tom Noascono, and Frank Mitchell, a collection of enthusiasts who devote many hours to their position. For this devotion so essential to a victorious, noted team, many thanks are due to Rich, Tom, and Frank. CHS salutes a very special sports manager, a very special Kahok. It justly boasts to all We've got a tiger on our team! 84 ENDLESS EFFORT OF KAHOK COACHES BRINGS FAME TO CHS One of the faces seen in the great gym of CHS for the past nineteen years —that of Coach Virgil Fletcher —has added more prestige to the name of Kahoks as the top roundballers in the state than any other one star. With his assistant, Mr. Pitol, he has led the Kahoks with devotion displayed passing the line of obligation. Where there are great players, great teams . . . state champions, there is a man to be found beyond the limelight strengthening, encouraging, sometimes prodding. For Kahoks, that man is the real chief, the coach! Great tribute should therefore be paid to Coach Fletcher and Coach Pitol, who have devoted unexpendable hours to basketball —to CHS. National Honor Society has set high standards for all its members. In order to become a member a student must have attained a high scholastic record, exhibited strong character, provided good leadership, and extended his services to school and community. FRONT MAG-ENTHUSIASM FOR PRECISION Two eyes, divided by one nose, over one mouth equals one face ... as all members of Mu Alpha Theta know, for theirs are the faces which comprise the mathematics honor society at CHS. Only those third and fourth year math students who maintain a B-plus average in math and a B average in all other subjects are eligible to become pledges. It is the purpose of Mu Alpha Theta, under the direction of Mr. Neil Morrison, to encourage students to take more interest in math and to show the usefulness of math in everyday life, as well as in special vocations. Every year Mu Alpha Theta holds the Christmas Tea honoring CHS alumni. Faces fill with excitement and pride as pledges are inducted into membership at the formal and informal initiations. The year concludes as the spring picnic is held in honor of graduating members. PHI EPSILON- The changing faces of the members of Phi Epsilon, the Latin Club of CHS, are seen once a month in room 301. They meet to learn more about the Romans, their customs, and the ancient gods and goddesses. Throughout the year, Latin Club members attend many conventions. The principle one this year is the National Latin Convention at the University of Southern California. At this convention, club members are entitled to participate in chariot races, Roman fashion shows, and contests of all types. In the spring during National Latin Week, the annual Roman Banquet is held. Club members dress in Roman costume, toga or tunic, to attend the banquet. Money made from the sale of pencils on which the season's basketball schedule is printed and folders help pay for this main event of the Latin Club. BEARS THE TORCH OF CLASSICAL LEARNING BACK ROW: S. This enthusiastic group of students devotes its time and energy toward improving school life and making it more enjoyable for students and faculty. Student Council plans the Homecoming, one of the main events of the school year. Entertaining and educational assemblies are scheduled throughout the year in an attempt to widen the interests of the students. A book store where school supplies may be purchased is also provided by the Student Council. Through these and many other functions, the aims of the Council are accomplished. However, Student Council is not all work. It has recently been given such privileges as selecting the cheerleaders and organizing pep weeks during the year. This valuable organization has undergone a transition and become Junior Leadership. Junior Leadership is an organization exclusively for Juniors to prepare them for the responsibilities of the Student Leadership program. Members assume the duties of Student Service club in helping teachers maintain order in the halls. Members forfeit their study hall each day to check blue slips in the hall. TEPEE-HUB OF Tepee has served not only as a coordinator between school and social activities, but also as a place for its members to enjoy themselves and meet new faces. Tepee is headed by the Tepee Council, a group of hard-working students who plan all the money-making projects throughout the year. Included in these projects are the annual light-bulb sale and the May Dance, the highlight of the year. The profits help pay for the expenses of the Tepee building. Hard work and a good reputation throughout the years have made CHS proud of Tepee. With this goal in mind, the club is serving, and will continue to serve, the community. To be eligible for membership, a student must have ranked in the upper third of the driver education classes. In the past year, under the capable supervision of Mr. Stone, the Courtesy Car Club has supplied stickers to those who drive to school. It has also distributed calendars stressing safety. The face of every student should show pride in the aims and accomplishments of this worth-while organization. It is their job to help the administration and the counselors by delivering green slips and absentee sheets, operating the switchboard, answering the telephone, running errands, and assisting the secretaries in any way possible. Their requirements are a C average, a free study hall, and the desire to learn efficiency and accept responsibility. Their faces are many, their jobs are numerous, and their help is necessary. 133 CLASSES The feeling of pride as we enter CHS for the first time as seniors . . . the self-assurance we gain as we fulfill greater responsibilities ... the realization that our class is outstanding in leadership and scholastic ability . . . the wistfulness we feel as we dream old dreams . . . the awareness that we are doing many things for the last time . . . the gratitude we feel toward the faculty and administration for their patience, help, and guidance . . . the frazzled nerves and short tempers encouraged by final exams . . . the security of acquired wisdom . . . the sadness we feel as we hear the first strains of Pomp and Circumstance . . . the sense of accomplishment when we receive our diplomas . . . the relief when it is acknowledged that we are prepared to face life . these are the things we remember about our final year at CHS. 136 137 BACK ROW: B. As the faces change, their many new expressions reveal the excitement, anxieties, and wonderment of the sophomore class. We newcomers, striving to make our faces distinguishable in the crowd of experienced and accomplished upper classmen, elected our Executive Board to guide us toward this goal. Next we watched with the many admiring viewers who gazed at Gail Aderhold, our lovely sophomore maid, as she made her bows at the 1964 Coronation. As the year progressed, the Class of 67 became acquainted with the many faces of CHS through its scholastic, athletic, and extracurricular programs. At the close of this year we will say good-bye to some of the old familiar faces we have learned to know, but we will look forward to welcoming the countless new faces and experiences that the coming years will bring. IN MEMORIAM July 12, 1948 to November 11, 1964 216 DEDICATED TO YOU It is with a great deal of pride and yet humility that we, the editors of the Kahokian, present to you this annual of the 1964-65 school year. It is with pride, because we believe it to be the best of its kind. It is with humility for it is for you to judge. In compiling this book we attempted to relate, via pictures and words, a complete and interesting history of the 1 964-65 school year. We have accomplished this task with the invaluable guidance provided by our sponsor. Miss Kirsch, and the excellent assistance of the staff. In the compiling of this yearbook several innovations were made which we decided, after careful contemplation, were necessary to the enjoyment of its reader and to the quality of the book. Among those changes made was the lack of a formal dedication. But this book is dedicated — it is Dedicated to You, the students of CHS. So, here it is, your yearbook. Take it! Read it! Enjoy it! With it goes our earnest desire that it will remain a treasure house of memories which shall never cease to fill you with reminiscent joy. Respectfully submitted.
