fl 77fZ8I'l'lOI'l.ClI'lfL I Mrs. Fern Housman NATURE As a tond mother, when the day is o'erg Leads bv the hand her little child to bed, Halt willing, halt reluctant to be led, And leave his broken playthings on the tloor, Still gazing at them through the open door, Nor wholly reassured and comforted By promises of others in their stead, Which, though more splendid, may not please him more, So Nature deals with us, and takes away Our playthings one by one, and by the hand Leads us to rest so gently, that we go Scarce knowing it we wish to go or stay, Being too tull ot sleep to understand How tar the unknown transcends the what we know. -Henry Wadsworth Longfellow Mrs. Fern Housman was born at Plymouth, Nebraska. She attended the Beatrice schools and was graduated from Beatrice High School. Shortly afterward, she went to the state ot Mississippi where she was employed as a teacher. After her marriage to Harry M, Housman, they made their home in Mayfield, Kentucky, until Mr. Housman's death in l9l8. Mrs. Housman returned to Nebraska and resumed her education. She completed a course at the Northwestern Business College of Beatrice and received her A.B. degree from the Colorado State Teachers College at Greeley. She taught commercial subjects in Beatrice, Wymore, and Benkelman High Schools. She was then employed by the Board ot Education at Lincoln, Nebraska, and had taught here continuously until her death on March 21. Mrs. Housman had studied at Columbia University in New York City, University of California at Berkeley, Combined Universities of Belgium, and the University of Nebraska, in addition to Colorado State Teachers College where she received her bachelor's and rnaster's degrees, Before becoming a member of the CVHS faculty in 1942, Mrs. Housman taught at Lincoln High School. During the thirteen years she was at CVHS, she taught typing, shorthand, and bookkeeping. She sponsored the National Honor Society and the Service committee and was financial adviser for the PSG and the Viewpoint.
