Father Brooks sets the tone for the present and the future of the College of the Holy Cross. The liberal education offered by Holy Cross is a model for all, in it knowledge, ethical principles and Christianity are mag- nificently blended. No other New England college has demonstrated better the essences of liberal education, Father Brooks has been the leader and the visible spokesman for the liberal education of the l98O's and I99O's. -Dr. Kathryn A. McCarthy Ph. D. Tufts University Member, Board of Trustees, College of the Holy Cross . . Perhaps he CFr. Brooksj is best understood as one whose attitudes toward education, society and the process of maturing were forged in the World War ll generation who saw the challenges to be so great that they should be addressed without artifice or overly mannered rhetoric. He is a man of deep social, moral and religious concern who has many friends but is devoid of small talk. A man of direct honesty, he has little tolerance for what he sees as self-serving or pre- tentious. He is an honest man who believes his duty is to get things done. -Dr. Edward F. Callahan Department of English, College of the Holy Cross One of Father Brooks' great contributions to Holy Cross has been his deep sense of the religious and intellectual ideals of the Society of Jesus. He has vigor- ously and consistently defended the authentic human- ism which is fostered by a study of the liberal arts. He has guided the College in its pursuit of academic excel- lence and its recruitment of highly qualified faculty. And he has helped to create and maintain a religious climate on campus where faith and justice are linked in educating students to become men and women for others. -Fr. Joseph L. Ryan, S.J. Rector, College of the Holy Cross
