PROFILES IN T TELAGE SOME UNIQUE TEACHERS David J. O'Brien History Teacher, author, expert in American Catholicism, member of the Board of Di- rectors of the National Catholic Reporter: these are just a few of the hats ,David J . O'Brien wears. Lest one think that all these responsibilities make Professor O'Brien inaccessible to his students, one need only drop by his office, There, amid his shelves laden with books arranged in no particular order, the professor sits at his ancient Underwood, composing his next article for Commonweal. When a student comes by, he breaks from his work to discuss a term paper, answer questions about a class, or even take a few minutes to talk about the Catholic Church or politics fthe two are not mutu- ally exclusivel. His easy-going manner in class, enhanced by his always present Marlboro cigarette and styrofoam coffee cup, encourages the student to feel free to express his or her ideas. It is no won- der Professor O'Brien has earned the so- briquet, Good Guy . Rev. J .D.B. Hamilton Classics Knock on the door bedecked in photo- graphs of John Houseman la.k.a. Profes- sor Kingsfieldl, and one is likely to be greeted with a robust, Go away! Walk in anyway, and there, either with his feet propped up on his desk, or hunched over his typewriter, demonically snickering as he composes an exam for one of his classes, sits the one and only Hamilton. What do you want, twit? inquires he. We have a tutorial, remember? Oh God, he murmurs as he rolls his eyes, What have you got this week? Begin to read this week's assignment, and look up from the paper once! in awhile to see whether Hamilton is: KAJ holding his head in his hands, or CBJ reading some- thing on his desk. One may think he is not paying attention to what is being said until he interrupts the tutee by questioning a whole week's work. He may seem arro- gant and sarcastic, but it is all a show. Holy Cross is blessed with a distinguished faculty. Space limitations prevent giving all the professors the ink they deserve. The five profiled here have been chosen because of their accomplishments and their classroom mannerisms. Certainly, they are representative of the educators who daily travel to Mt.
