COMMANDING OFFICER JAMES I. MOORE Commander, U.S.N. CAPTAlN'S MESSAGE COGSWELL'S 1963-64 employment with the U.S. Seventh Fleet was a memorable experience. The tumultuous developments in Southeast Asia frequently reminded us of the importance of our assignment in the Westein Pacific. It is my belief that the presence of Cruiser-Destroyer Flotilla NINE, including COGSWELL, proved! to be a significant deterrent to the forces which were determined to take all of Southeast Asia. In addition to helping maintain the Seventh Fleetis uPower for Peace, COCSWELL personnel did a superb job in Winning new friends for America through an effective people-to-people program, especially in Sasebo, Japan, and in Hong Kong, B.C.C. The success of this cruise was made possible by the skill, hard work and devotion to duty of the officers and men Whom you will meet in the pages that follow. They Worked together as a team, responding to every challenge, at sea and ashore, with a spirit that makes me very proud to be their com- manding officer. - s,.............,,..-.L....s.1-....-......qs.g...sq.E...:....v.,,....w-....s...:.....,...,s,.............f....,..... ,.........u..r...........,YY....v.........

UNDERWAY 17 October 1963 was the day many people had been waiting for. USS COGSWELL and 13 other ships left San Diego for a WestPac tour of 6 months. Some were looking for- ward to their first visit to Japan, Hong Kong, and the Philippines. Many were sad as this day separated them from Wives, families, and Sweethearts. To them no har- gains or beautiful sceneiy could replace those left behind. As COCSWELL sailed that morning, our thoughts turned to the busy days ahead. On the passage Westward, COGSWELL par- ticipated in flotilla operations which in- cluded drills,,gunnery exercises, and re- fuelings.. 1 1411. .A 1 THE SHIP REPLENISHMENT y t A f Zum , , t REFUELING s Burk, SN Little, SN Garcia, SN Jankoski, ETS THE SEA
