NULLI SECUNDUS WEST PAC CRUISE USS Cogswel-I DD651 17 Oct 63 io 16 Apr 64 Dedication We dedicate this cruise hook to the Wives, families, and sweethearts whose devotion and loyalty inspire us to make COGSWELL truly 'Lnulli secundusf' OUR SHIP COGSWELL was built by the Bath Iron Works of Bath, Maine, and commissioned on 17 August 1943- Our ship is named after Rear Admiral James K. Cogswell, a Spanish-American W7 ar hero, and his son, Captain Francis Cogswell, who distinguished himself in World War I. COGSWELL devoted her days of World War II to the Pacific Theatre of operations, participating in many major campaigns in that area. USS COCSWELL is a general purpose destroyer 376 feet long with a 39 foot beam. Displacing 2150 tons, she has 60,000 horsepower driving her shafts with a top speed of 34 knots. She can he employed for shore bombardment, anti-submarine Warfare CASWJ, anti- aircraft defense, rescue missions, and escort duties. Our main job is now ASW . We are equipped With both conventional and homing torpedoes, depth charges, hedgehogs, sonar, and 3 inch and 5 inch guns. COMMANDING OFFICER JAMES I. MOORE Commander, U.S.N. CAPTAlN'S MESSAGE COGSWELL'S 1963-64 employment with the U.S. Seventh Fleet was a memorable experience. The tumultuous developments in Southeast Asia frequently reminded us of the importance of our assignment in the Westein Pacific. It is my belief that the presence of Cruiser-Destroyer Flotilla NINE, including COGSWELL, proved! to be a significant deterrent to the forces which were determined to take all of Southeast Asia. In addition to helping maintain the Seventh Fleetis uPower for Peace, COCSWELL personnel did a superb job in Winning new friends for America through an effective people-to-people program, especially in Sasebo, Japan, and in Hong Kong, B.C.C. The success of this cruise was made possible by the skill, hard work and devotion to duty of the officers and men Whom you will meet in the pages that follow. They Worked together as a team, responding to every challenge, at sea and ashore, with a spirit that makes me very proud to be their com- manding officer. - s,.............,,..-.L....s.1-....-......qs.g...sq.E...:....v.,,....w-....s...:.....,...,s,.............f....,..... ,.........u..r...........,YY....v......... UNDERWAY 17 October 1963 was the day many people had been waiting for. USS COGSWELL and 13 other ships left San Diego for a WestPac tour of 6 months. Some were looking for- ward to their first visit to Japan, Hong Kong, and the Philippines. Many were sad as this day separated them from Wives, families, and Sweethearts. To them no har- gains or beautiful sceneiy could replace those left behind. As COCSWELL sailed that morning, our thoughts turned to the busy days ahead. On the passage Westward, COGSWELL par- ticipated in flotilla operations which in- cluded drills,,gunnery exercises, and re- fuelings.. 1 1411. .A 1 THE SHIP REPLENISHMENT y t A f Zum , , t REFUELING s Burk, SN Little, SN Garcia, SN Jankoski, ETS THE SEA V- ,AM ,.,..Y ..., .........,. .,,...-..,,..-....,..-,...... - ,k,,:,,.2....,,. ,, ,,4,,.,M.,,,-,,,,,:,..,, . -. -Tr, --71.2.1-f 2.7--,rg-Q.-us.-,J-we-..11f L- -.JJ . ,,L5f:.-Ag,aqt,..e -:ref -1 as 1-3-.sf-if-,-5,-,f -.-.-arheaf-,f -. -1,1 ,- . From the majestic mountains and the rest- less plains. From the bayous and the apple blossoms they were gathered. Not by fate but by a conventional obligation that makes all men equal, the thirst of emancipation. For a moment of eternity their lives were one. Their thoughts, their purpose combined in the spirit of the past and the dedication of the future. Betrayed by none, loved by all, their ability, their limitations, their loyalty, their. Willingness, their needs, their expectations, their joys, their sorrows, these constitute a great junction of human interest. Each a different story, but for a brief sentence in history they are bound to each other by the same oath, the same belief as all right thinking men. An apple is no greater than its core, a home no greater than its love .... A SHIP NO GREATER THAN ITS MEN. H. A.
