1 w '- Long one of the world's least-known island groups, the Ryukyu Archipelago and its main island of Okinawa have geographic location which, despite their apparent insignihcance, has fated them to play an increasingly important role in World history. C1 This chain of small islands lying between Japan and Formosa just off the great Asian land- N29 525 mass, was glimpsed twice by the COGSWELL. Our first visit, in early December 1960, was to relieve the USS HORNET CCVS-12D and Destroyer Division 12 of their WESTPAC duties.
