Dedication This l95r1 edition ot the Viking annual is dedicated to Coeur d'Alene High School, which has been graduating men and women since the turn of the century, first from the school located on the grounds ot the present Central School, and since l9ll from the present building. ln the summer of l9lO ground was broken tor the new school, and the first classes met there in the fall. Subjects taught were four years of English, science, and Latin, three and a halt of math, and two and a half of history. There was no auditorium in the building at that time, and no gym. The chemistry and physics rooms were located in the back of what is now the study hall. Football boys prac- ticed in a vacant lot on Eighth St., and basketball was played outside during good weather. The high school annual was first called The Chinook. It went rather deeply into debt and in 1928 a four page paper covered yearbook called the Senior edition of The White Pine was published. From T928 until ICMA, the annual was called The White Pine. Since then it has been the Viking. Principals of the school since l927 were F. H. LaFrenz, G. O. Phippeny, Harlow Campbell, and Harold Evans. One of the teachers was Eugene Person, after whom Person Field was named. Coeur d'Alene High School has graduated some good people, and during the wars it carried its full load of sorrow, as forty-tive of its boys were reported dead or missing in action. As every school must do, C. H. S. has formed a nucleus tor community life. And to those who have graduated and to those who will graduate, its Alma Mater will ever be an inspiration. Founded as the place of learning, Reared against the sky, Proudly stands our Alma Mater as the years go by. Onward, onward, be our watchword Never once to fail, Hail to thee, our Alma Mater Coeur d'Alene all hail.
