Each high school year marks the end of one threshold, filled with memories that we will carry with us to the last. Like balloons that rise to celebrate any festive occa- sion, many memories, and friends as well, will drift away in the years to come. The 1985 Reflector Staff chose ‘Rise’ as_ the theme for this year’s book because as we rise, we go our separate ways, and yet, we will always remain a part of this school, of these friends, and of these years. RilS Eas ooo kLISE Balloons really did fill Carl McConnell Stadium during football season. Unfortunately many of them burst for the Knights this year Mike Davis was an exception, though, since he will always remember the first and only touchdown of his gridiron career. Running back Frank Mooney probably has a few special memories of his junior year; one of the best is friendship. The highlight of the evening was the announcement that Terry McCoy Shanna Meade had been chosen as the new Knight and Maiden for the 1984-85 Christmas Dance. The new Maiden was crowned by Mark Salyer. The Court con- s isted of: Shanna Meade — Robert Nixon; Rhonda Caldwell — Kevin Marcus; Becky Bright — Tim Collins; Sharon Adkins — Terry McCoy. The dance began at 7:00 p.m. The cafeteria was decorated in silver and red metallic streamers, interlaced with white clouds. The entertainment was presented by the Electric-Sound. Homecoming °890 The annual Homecoming Sweetheart Dance was held on February 8, after the CHS-Ervington basketball game. At the eleventh hour, Knight Anthony Phipps and Maiden Rosa Rhodes were crowned by Amy Hall and Mark Salyer. The 1985 Sweetheart Court consisted of: Eighth grade: Felicia Maine and Johnathon Dowell; Nineth grade: Rosa Rhodes and Chuckie Sheets; Tenth grade: Kristin Rudder and Troy Renfro; Eleventh grade: Nikki Gollie and Anthony Phipps; Twelth grade: Ann Lindsay and Carl Greear pone, P Z OT —— - = —_ male ena The 1985 basketball homecoming was a ‘‘sweetheart”’ of a game for the first half the Blue Knights led the Ervinton Rebels by 13 points. The second half, however, ended in heartbreak at the Knights lost to the Rebels 69 to 61. WS — V Drama... The CHS8 Players The CHS players have combined their talents this year to present a variety of theatrical genres ranging from the classical Barber of Seville and Cyrano de Bergerac to the comic genius of ‘| Must Be Somebody — It Says So On My Horoscope.” The players spread the Christmas spirit with an adaptation of the Dicken’s classic ‘‘A Christmas Carol’; Poe’s ever-suspenseful drama, ‘The Tell-Tale Heart’ was also a favorite of the entire student body. Lynda Moore Tina Salyer 114 Kristen Rudder Joy Hill Amy Hilton Football °S4 C.H.S. again proved unpredictable during the ’84 football season, sur- prising even the greatest of pro- gnosticators by blasting to an early start. The Blue Knights opened their season in Dickenson County with a 12-6 victory over the Rebels from Ervinton. The Blue Knights’ next victim was the J. J. Kelly Indians. Kelly jumped out to an early 3-0 lead, then it was all Coeburn. The 18-3 victory gave the Knights a 2-0 record in the district, with Clintwood next on the agenda. The Green Waves came rolling into Coeburn ready to reclaim their L.P.D. supremacy and handed the Blue Knights a heartbreaking 14-7 loss. With three district games already under their belt, the Blue Knights car- ried the 2-1 record to the Black Dia- mond District to face the St. Paul Deacons. After a shaky start, the Blue Knights prevailed with a 26-6 victory. Coeburn, now 3-1 overall, visited the Black Raiders of Norton. The Blue Knights shut down the potentially dangerous Black Raider offense and walked away with a 27-6 win. The Blue Knights packed their bags and headed to Twin Springs for a showdown with the Titans. When the dust had cleared, the Blue Knights were again on top with a 39-7 out-of- district victory. The Blue Knights now 5-1, faced their biggest game of the year, in form of the Powell Valley Vikings. It was a must win situation, a loss would just about knock Coeburn out of the championship picture, since Clint- wood had yet to lose a game. The Vikings came ready to play. They showed the championship form from a year ago and handed the Blue Knights a 28-0 disheartening defeat. Now 5-2, the Blue Knights would travel for the last time of the year to Rye Cove to take on the Eagles. The Blue Knights offense was in high gear as they tallied 45 points leaving Rye Cove defeated 45-30, heading home for their final two games of the year against L.P.D. foes Appalachia and Pound. The Bulldogs, in search of the L.P.D. championship, shut out the Knights 22-0. The loss was saddened even more by mentor Fred Crabtree an- nouncing his retirement from coaching. With the knights out of the cham- pionship picture, the game with Pound had special significance. Sixteen seniors would play their last game, along with Coach Crabtree. But Pound showed no sympathy and dealt the Knights a 35-0 defeat. Coeburn finish- ed the season with a 6 and 4 record. 116 eee BR She ity Se eee ATR je A he ; “Ea geome AFA A.. “s VARSITY First Row: Les Robinson, Brian Mit- chell, Mike Davis, Carl Greear, David Farmer, Donald Meade, Kenneth Turner, William Swann.
