At the district match the Knight's golfers came up with a fourth place finish, one spot shy of traveling to the regionals. But the team did have some bright moments, John Hall and Bob Yeary both went on to regional play after making the individual honors in district. In the regionals, John shot an 81. Classroom and FBLA activities are integrated in the business courses to meet the needs of all students enrolled. The Coeburn Chapter of FBLA has been very active this year. The Chapter participated in the Clinch Valley Regional Fall Workshop and Spring Conference. At the Spring Conference eleven members won first place in their respective events and went on to participate in the State Conference held in Richmond. At the State level, the poster event placed fifth. School and community activities in which the local Chapter participated include the work- study program for the purpose of increasing the business knowledge skills of our students as well as assisting the teachers with their clerical duties; a Thanksgiving fruit basket for the elderly at the Clinch Valley Manor; a Christmas Party, complete with gifts and treats, for the Headstart children; and Open House for the ninth and tenth graders to promote the Business Department. The Chapter also engaged in several social activities through the year which include a fall outing at Mrs. Unita Olde’s farm and a spring ‘“get-together’’ in the Home Economics Department. The Coeburn Chapter of FBLA sold candy as their annual fund-raising project. Part of the earnings were contributed to the March of Dimes Project HELP, a portion was given toward the purchase of a Xerox machine for the school, and the remainder was used for the operating expenses of the Chapter. The school year was culminated with a skating party at anearby skating rink to honor our senior FBLA members. Phone 762-5563 Pittston People Ready to mine the coal of tomorrow A new world coal study says that we must triple world coal production by the year 2000 if we are to meet our energy needs. Much of that increased production is going to come from the mines of eastern U.S. coal fields. Pittston people are ready. More than 7,000 Pittston men and women make up one of the most experienced coal mining teams in the world. They produce premium-quality metallurgical and steam coal mostly from deep mining operations in Virginia, West Virginia, and eastern Kentucky. They have made Pittston the nation’s largest independent coal producer and its leading coal exporter. From Appalachian coal seams, the Pittston miners produce coal from one of the largest coal reserves in the East. The quality of Pittston coal has won it a worldwide reputation for excellence. With new ultra modern mining complexes constructed at a cost of several hundred million dollars in the last half decade, Pittston people now have the capacity to produce more than 28 million tons a year when the demand is there. That investment alone demonstrates Pittston’s faith in the future of coal and the people who mine it. Pittston people are ready now—and for 2000.
