V JUV REFLECTOR OF DEDICATED TO THE 1974 3ENI0R8 VOLUME 38 COEBURN HIGH SCHOOL COEBURN, VIRGINIA 1 i- From the very beginning of the year until the end, Mr. Myers and Mr. Lewis have been here at CHS to give their time and advice to the students . Day after day they travel that long hard road that will eventually end another year. With the help of Mrs. Jordon and Miss Rhonda Greear, the journey of the administration is made much easier. As we move through life we should always work for the betterment of our world as well as ourself. On the road of life always remember to hold your head up . Cherish We will always remember those special happenings that occur as we travel through high school. Cheri each moment of Concentrate for a time on the moments that we would like to hold in our mind forever. Remember those simple things , t whether it be an empty hall or an over filled locker. Not only remember these , but also remember those moments that are dear to each individual . Wouldn’t it be great if we could suspend time in a bottle? - flHl W ZA INFORMAL SECTION We ' ve Looked At Life From Both Sides Now Most of the time life is seen from only one point of view . Many people tend to forget that there is more to life than they realize. During this year we hope that everyone has taken the time to look at life from both sides. 13 Sometimes Ya Win Sometimes Ya Lose The Blue Knights with the coaching of Mike Roberts and Bill Casey went into the 73-74 season with a physically fit team. The men that played did their best and gave it their all , but the Knights had a very dishear- tening season. The school is very proud and grateful for their efforts. 14 15 Listen To The Music On November 9, 1973 at 7:30 the Homecoming game got underway . The Blue Knights battled the Ervinton Rebels. Although the Knights were defeated, their loss did not defeat the spirit of the Homecoming Dance which was held after- ward. The spirit of the occasion filled the caf- eteria as the students and faculty settled down to dance and for some to just listen to the music . 16 17 We ' ve Only Just Begun . . . This year ' s junior varsity football team, composed of approximately 30 Eighth and Ninth grade boys, was a team that started out slow due to a lack of fundamentals. As the season progressed, so did each member of the team. Even though their record was only 2-4, their season was a suc- cess in that the boys had learned most of the basic fundamentals of organized football and will hopefully become the future STARS of C.H.S. 18 Am Woman 20 Girls Basketball is a relatively new sport at C . H . S . For the past two years the weaker sex (as some people infer) have had their chance to show that their ability is equal to that of the boys . When you think about it , are girls really the weaker sex? 21 The first glistening snow flakes of the season fell upon the couples as they entered the cafeteria, setting the CHRISTMAS spirit for the Junior- Senior Christmas party and the . . . Mistletoe Magic With the help of Mrs . Carico , the theme of the party , Mistletoe Magic , was displayed beauti- fully. The highlight of the eve- ning came with the announce- ment of Maiden Tammy Gray and Knight Mike Jones. 22 Y iV SaKiS ;:;- KS2s: .y sitatisgg f| ■ Ml fe:«llll||l VI W t| S 3s6 fc a S f| ' U • t i (l [■ 11 -51 nas. afeS |fl Hot Ashh helped set the mood for the party as they played music while the cou- ples danced. 23 Don ' t Step On My Blue Suede Shoes. . . 24 Under the capable leadership of their coaches, Ira Joe Lewis and Larry Harris , the Blue Knights came out with an impressive third place in the Lonesome Pine District. The highlight of the season came on January 4 at Ervington High School when Hurley Mitchell broke 1000 points. 25 Playground In My Mind In a few years to come, we will look back and remember the Junior Var- sity team for what they contributed to our school . We will also remem- ber coach Doug Kern for his guidance. The 1974 team finished with a record of four wins and twelve losses . The Five starting players were Johnny Camette , Tony Harriston , Denny Harton , Bill Pate , and Brad Stallard . 26 Comment by player, Denny Harton: This year there was only one tenth grader on our team. The lack of experience kept us from winning, but we are building for the future. 27 During the ' 74 season the wrestling team really put forth much effort and determination to reach a successful triumph. Thanks to the Coaching of Mr. Hubbard, the team had a very successful year. 28 MEMBERS: Paris Fisher, Randy Coomer, Greg Kiser, Andre Harriston, Wiley Powers, Bobby Salyer, Randy Rhodes, Mark Odle, Eddie Johnson, Barry Bailey, James Helbert, Danny Farmer, Harve Mooney, David May. 29 Bitter Blues The crack of the bat, a long fly ball deep into the bleachers, and it ' s gone for a home run! Long, hard hours of practice combined with the stern supervision of Coach Steve Hubbard produced an excellent season for Coeburn’s baseball team. With no losses, the Blue Knights were the Lonesome Pine Champions. Even though they did not win the State Championship, they are still the State Champs to the students of CHS. 30 31 32 The main object of this game is to give all you can and hope for the best, and that is exactly what the members of the CHS track team did. With the help of their coach Bill Casey, the track team put forth much effort in hopes of doing their best . . . and they did . 33 Pieces Of April On the evening of April 27 , the scene was set in a romantic spring mood which was inviting to all who attended the 1974 Junior- Senior Prom. The spirit of the occasion was brought out by the beautiful flowers and butterflies that stood out as part of the decoration. 34 The music for the evening was supplied by Shadrack. With the many gorgeous gowns and beauti- ful corsages that adorned them , the theme was fitting to the occasion . . . Pieces of April. 35 Anticipation On May 17, 1974 the students and teachers, as well as many parents filled the gymnasium and anxiously awaited the presentation of awards to the students. Special awards were presented to Mrs. Billie Jordan, Mrs. Shirley Robbins, and Mr. Harold Dotson. Many deserving students received awards, but there were many others who deserved awards that did not receive them. 36 UNDERCLASS AWARDS: 1st ROW: K. Ellis, D. Adkins, G. Laney, J. Culberson, G. H . S . make up the majority, but without teachers, would there be any students? The teachers are the backbone of our school; they help to see that the guidelines of our school are kept . The job of the teacher is not a simple one; their hours are long , their pay is little . . . They began by selecting Purple, Lilac, and White as their class colors, The Morning After as their class song, and as their motto, It ' s nice to be important, but it ' s more important to be very nice. Along with the usual flow of activity , there came some unexpected changes at C . H . S . The year 1974 will be well remembered as the first time that all dances, except the Prom, were postponed because of the nationwide energy crisis . Despite their disappointment , the seniors kept up their spirits . The remainder of the senior activities , such as ordering announcements and measuring for caps and gowns , was carried out as usual . Even though there were many changes for the Class of 1974, the Seniors will look back on their Senior Days, remembering the good times as well as the bad . Thanks to the faithful supervi- sion of Mrs. Robbins, the Reflector for ' 74 is in our estimation one of the best Coeburn has ever had . 126 It ' s Going To Take Some Time 12 7 The End Is In Truth . . . Once upon a time we lived with hearts that raced and minds that dreamed and clocks that had no hour hands. With common goals and common longings, we laughed, we loved, we played, we won . Those were our school days , our happy days . They were real because we made them real. They were alive because we existed. 128 The Beginning And then, as suddenly as they had dawned, they faded into the less carefree days of adulthood . And finally they are now gone . . . those happy days in school . 129 MOUNTAIN MINING This Ad Made Possible by SURFACE MININS i the future depends on you. and you can depend on us to help you build it.
