The floats were few but they all had the same thought - and wish - VICTORY! ! 20 The mid-afternoon evening brought clear skies, a brisk wind and happy faces but unfortunately not victory. Flossie Maples was crowned Queen. The members of her court were Kathy Lawson, Nadine Barnette, Joyce Stidham, Carolyn Maples, Ellen Hylton, Donna McConnell, Rita Thomas. 21 Junior- Senior Rickey Davis and Fredia Gordon were crowned Knight and Maiden of the 1970 Christmas Party. After the game a dance was held in the cafeteria. 26 At halftime Miss Rhonda Collins was ' crowned Sweet- heart Queen. The court consisted of Debbie Counts, Debbie Coomer, Luann Bond, Pam May, and Mary Alice Ringley. 27 Fun And Excitement At The Mardi Gras With the combined efforts of the Latin Club and French Club, the annual Mardi Gras was held in the recreation room on March 19. Teachers as well as a large number of students attended the affair. The decorations were great, the music was sensational, and the food highly d electable. 28 29 Miscellaneous Happenings TO THE RIGHT: seniors are taking their last measurements. Excite- ment reigns high for them because graduation gets closer every day. BELOW TO THE LEFT: Carrol Dale has been presented a football cake by the F.H.A. The whole student body welcomed Mr. Dale at an as- sembly program. ABOVE TO THE RIGHT : the Charger staff is stapling together the newspaper so it can be delivered on time. The staff hopes the stu- dent body appreciates all the good literature they receive at no charge. IMMEDIATELY TO THE RIGHT: Rita Thomas presents two grade school students with Christmas gifts. The Keyettes furnished all gifts. 30 BELOW: the band is getting ready for a concert, while Mr. Ramsey is dealing with some difficulty. ABOVE: the stud-ents are enjoying themselves at the Sadie Hawkins dance held on April 2. TO THE LEFT : Santa Claus, alias Mr. Stew- art, is presenting presents to Head Start children. 31 32 The Jr. -Sr. Prom was a wish come true. The dream of evening gowns, beautiful girls, and handsome men was finally a reality. The colors of blue and silver made the whole affair seem like a dream as couples danced to the music by the Decibles. Later on in the evening the 1971 Senior class and their dates were introduced. Then came the moment everyone was waiting for - the crowning of Mr. and Miss Coeburn High (Robert Hale and Debbie McConnell). After the crown- ing and the presentation of a dozen red roses, the Senior dance was led by the 1971 Mr. and Miss Coeburn High. It was an evening which will be long remembered by everyone for the fun and the excitement. 33 Finally . . . Graduation DATE: June 5, 1971 TIME: 8:00 o ' clock PLACE: Coebum High School EVENT: YOU stand in line until your name is called, walk forward to receive your diploma; as one phase of your life is completed, another simultaneously begins. 34 35 Faculty Classes Organizations Advertisements Queens 37 38 Coping with common and crucial problems, directing the office personnel, and super- vising every school function, Principal Harold Lester assumed the major burdens. Mr. Lester was aided by Assistant Principal Hansford Welch. Mr. Welch was responsi- ble for many and varied activities of the high school. Mr. Lester ' s and Mr. Welch ' s secre- tary, Mrs. Billie Jordan, was always ready to lend a helping hand to facul- ty members and students alike. The office was brightened by the friendly atmosphere she always envoked. Without these three persons, Coeburn High School could not run as smooth and efficiently as it has. C. H. S. Faculty Curriculum is the root of a school, since education is what school is all about. However an institution ' s principle task is not to teach its scholars; it must also grow to meet the needs of a changing society. The most modern curriculum would be useless if there were no instructors to pass on their knowledge to others. Mrs. Quillen gives the school paper, THE CHARGER, a critical look - while Mr. Hall shows his class an experiment - and hopes nothing goes wrong. Coach Nash is trying to figure out just what went wrong during football season . . . While Mrs. Salyers is opening her gifts she thinks, Wonder if I will really have twins? 40 . . . while Coach Hubbard (opposite page) wonders if he should get a girls ' football team organized! ! ! Boosting morale and providing sympathy, the cheer- leaders were a welcome sight to spectators and team alike. They decorated goal posts, made posters and banners, planned pep rallies, and decorated the gym for pep rallies. Rhonda was chosen by the JV and Varsity basketball teams. She is athletically in- clined and supports our team en- thusiastically. She is a great gal whom all of her classmates are proud to have as Sweetheart Queen. 106 A winning smile is one of the many attributes of Miss Flossie Maples. Her charm and beauty are also outstand- ing features that she possesses. Flossie’s unique personality is that of one in a million. 107 SetUonA cuut one ' Zfoiuviect May 14, 1971 was set aside to honor the seniors and underclassmen who did outstanding work in their subjects. The day began with the Senior Grand March and the Awards Assembly. In the afternoon the seniors had their annual tea in the cafeteria. Mr. and Miss Coebum High (Debbie McConnell and Robert Hale) cut the cake. This was a memorable event in the lives of all the seniors, and these memories will remain with them for many years to come. — Reflector Staff Of 1970-71 ABOVE LEFT: Marian Perry and Fredia Gordon listen while Mrs. Rob- bins explains how they should do the advertising section. We tried to present this yearbook in a formal and informal part. With the help of our very dedicated staff and Mrs. Robbins , I feel we have accomplished this. Each year there is a story to tell. The story is time; the time is now; the place is C.H.S. , and the characters are you . I hope each of you find in this book some part of you. Without you there would be no story, no dream, no fulfillment.
