1969 Reflector The woods are lovely, dark, and deep. But I have promises to keep. And miles to go before I sleep, And miles to go before I sleep. By: Robert Frost i (p 3 Z Jo re wo ref We, the members of the Reflector staff give to you a record of events and happenings that have taken place this past year. There are times of happiness, times of sadness, times of victory, times of defeat, and most of all times of memories. Now, the 1969 Reflector is yours to treasure. BILLIE JORDAN The thirty-second edition of the Reflector is dedicated to one who has been of a great and in valuable service to our school. Each day, her office is filled with both students and teachers with seemingly in- surmountable problems. She is always there with a smile and an unrelenting patience, willing to help us in any way that she can. We shall always remember her for her willingness to serve and her assistance to us. For her services to our school, it is with the greatest appreciation and pleasure that we dedicate the 1969 Reflector to our school secretary, Mrs. Billie Jordan. 4 i cS uperinten dent director of Instruction Mr. W. It is with the deepest sense of humility that I express my appreciation to each graduate for having excelled in the first major phase of your educational endeavors. There is very little mystery about what difficulties you must overcome for I should think that your goals now are reasonably clear. The difficulties lie more in day-to-day performance and in closing the gap between principle and practice, between theory and reality in everyday life. I have no illusions concerning your future and I have no doubt about your ability to perform well if courage, determination, self-control, and concentration continue to be a part of your life. It has been my pleasure for many years to have been a part of your life and I trust that I shall have an oppor- tunity, in some future time, to share some of the great moments in your life. B. J. CHS TAccrecfitecf Sy Southern 71 ss o eta t ion At the beginning of this school year, Coeburn High School was evaluated by a visiting committee repre- senting the Southern Association of Secondary Schools and Colleges. The committee’s purpose was to de- termine whether or not Coeburn High School was ac- ceptable for membership in the Southern Association. After observing the educational process at Coeburn High School, the committee commended that Coe- burn High School be admitted to the Southern Associa- tion. Coeburn was the first school in Wise County to receive membership. This is the highest accredita- tion that C.H.S. could receive, and we are proud to be recognized as a truly excellent high school striv- ing to meet the needs of each individual student. We are deeply indebted to Mr. B. J. Dotson, our former principal, for his leadership and service in the accreditation of Coeburn High School by the Southern Association of Secondary Schools and Colleges. We wish to thank the faculty for the time and hard work they did to make this possible. c5 emor Gfa ass 1st ROW: Joel Funk, Gary Ring, Jimmy Miller, Gary Welch, Walter Joyce, Lee Hillman, Fred Bryant, Jerry Harvey, Russell Graham, Mike Hughes, David Rose, James Puckett, Larry Stallard, Gary Powers, Jack Perry, Danny Ramey, Leon Browning, Wayne Salyers, Joe Sanders, Roger Pope, Gary Davis, Ricky McReynolds, Gary Culbertson, Larry Richardson, 2nd ROW; Ronald Robbins, Charles Nixon, Jackie Pridemo re, Larry Culbertson, Eddie Tickles, Terry A r- ney, Dale Couch, David Holbrook, Larry Osborne, James McConnell, James Collins, Randy Bright, Richard Hill, Roy Hall, Roger Johnson, 3rd ROW: Edward Ramsey, Arthur Mills, Rex Vance, Robert Luther, Danny Meade, Robert Grif- fith, Rudi Holbrook, Clinton Hale, Dayl Coomer, Kenneth Holbrook, Jerry Wright, David Beck, Alvin McConnell, Harold Hartsee, Bill Davidson, Jeffrey Kiser, 4th ROW; Linda Large, Doris Lawson, Jewell Hayes, Karen Hillman, G ass GKotto: : 3iue or Go c at 77 G ass G ower: GZon e ys u cG e 14 1969 ■r l w 3 1 S : ( ’ Sr , ' f ' S ■ ui I 1R M JM | 1 1 ' |: L 1 j i ' i ' f w j : l j J iT : ' ' T 1§ m k jH Wm iWT| P Kathryn Greear, Dawn Couch, Rita Stallard, Janelle McClellan, Brenda Ketron, Joanna McGlothlin, Betty Griffith, Faye Roberts, Debbie Miller, Rita Funk, Genelle Lawson, Emma Lou Powers, Joyce Walton, Brenda Sanders, Norma Meade, Shirley Miller, Elizabeth Carnette, Evelyn Porter. 5th ROW; Charlotte Salyer, Linda Reed, Gloria Odle, Pam Meade, Patty Lawson, SueFannon, Patricia Porter, Mary Barker, Paige Sanders, Jeanette Funk, Frances Lawson, Annette Hamm, Nancy Freeman, Nancy Couch, Joy Freeman, Lynn Large, Roseanna McCoy, Rebecca McConnell. 6th ROW; Barbara Hunsaker, Patsy Rose, Carol Kilgore, Mary Ann Moore, Sue Jackson, Linda Lundy, Janice Salyer, Joni Davis, Tam Freeman, Linda Smith, Charlotte Ringley, Cathy Miller, Karen Horne, Nila Smith, Kathy Jennings, Ollie Riggs, Jane Culbertson, Eunice Boggs. Club projects this year have included several bake sales; a peanut -brittle sales campaign, which grossed nearly $500, acting as guides, for the Wise County Basketball Tournament, and a regular project of the club includes assisting the teachers at the football games. Members of the club regularly attend an annual convention where elected delegates vote for international officers. Many interesting sights were seen and enjoyed by our visiting Key Clubbers at Richmond on March 21, 1969. Our club would like to humbly express our deep appreciation to Mr. Jack Thompkins, without whose assistance there would have been no way for our club to attend the convention. It is composed of students taking first, second, and third year French along with honorary members. The club enters a float in the Homecoming parade each year. It joins the Latin Club for an annual Mardi Gras paid for by the sale of candy and various projects. Each year the French and Latin Clubs battle in the annual basketball game. L. It was formed 12 years ago in 1946. Our motto is Labor omnia vincit! (Work conquers all. ) Our colors are purple and gold. This year’s club is composed of 75 members, all of whom are either taking first or second year Latin or have successfully completed two years of Latin. Each year the Latin club sells candy to raise money for the annual Latin-French Mardi Gras. This year ' s Mardi Gras theme will be Fairy- land Romance. The Latin club contributes annually to the March of Dimes, and co-sponsors a spirited and well enjoyed ball game between the Komans and the Gauls. Our sponsor is Mrs. Lila Johnson. L. We strive toward better home membership and better relations in state and community affairs. The club is composed of 52 members; and the president is Barbara Vandiver, who attended the State Convention at Fort Monroe. The F. H. A. was very proud of their float which won first place in the Homecoming Parade. On December 13, the club presented an enter- taining assembly program which went along with their project of emphasis for the year - Getting to Know Your Neighbors, Near and Far. To help work on this emphasis, the members chose pen pals from different countries. The Coeburn F. H.
