We wish to thank the publishers, the photographers, the faculty members, the students, and everyone else for helping us prepare Reflector ' 67. Soon after we began planning the book, it became evident we could never capture our beloved CHS on paper. We can provide only the pictures and the words. You can provide the spirit— that CHS spirit which cannot be placed on paper. In addition to showing the achievements of our school, we have to also show the achievements of our town. Such a fine record of progress certainly deserves recognition. CHS is growing; Coeburn is growing. And the fate of both is interwined. Community Liorai me P ! n 3 Regional rburn. EXIT mm ' ..,v ‘V I ■ ‘ w’K ' Dedication The Reflector Staff takes great pride in dedi- cating the 1967 Yearbook to Mr. Ben Spradlin— teacher, leader, friend. Mr. Spradlin has con- sistently shown himself to be a man worthy of recognition. As a teacher he imparts wisdom as well as knowledge. As president of the Wise County Teacher ' s Association, he works for better education in Wise County. As a friend, he is a cheerful com- panion, interested in helping the student with his problems. The graduating seniors will certainly miss Mr. Spr adlin. They will miss his wit, aWrtlor his guidance, and, most of all, his draW £a. 3 ' ality. Webster has defined an one who develops and cultivates mentally and morally and one who teaches, informs, and enlightens. Mr. Spradlin is that educator. Mr. Ben Spradlin 10 Superintendent Director of Instruction Mr. W. D. Richmond Mr. Harley T. Stallard Board of Education Left to right: Mr. Eugene D. Ireson, Vice Chairman, Roberson District; Mr. Lacy E. Fuller, Lipps District; Mr. George Wharton, Gladeville District; Mr. W. D. Richmond, District Superintendent; Mr. Frank E. Handy, Chairman, Richmond District; Mr. John Fischer, Big Stone Gap District; Mr. Harley T. Stallard, Director of Instruction. 12 Principal Spring, which is indeed a pleasant time of the year, signifies the beginning of a new season and a new era for our departing seniors. During your years as a student at Coeburn High School, you have developed attitudes, approaches, and abilities to co- incide with the rapid changes in our society. Above all, I strongly believe each graduate of our school should possess and display certain graces and refine- ment of character that mark him as a gentleman, easily at home in the company of his fellows in what- ever situation he may find himself. Since education has been the bulwark in preserv- ing our past heritage, it becomes imperative that every student use education to settle his mind, to awaken it; to stablize it, to unloose it, and to mold it, once in order, that it may be remolded anew. It is always fascinating to watch graduates as they receive their diplomas. Usually there are as many different expressions as there are graduates. Basically, it is an end to many years of planning for a successful high school career and the begin- ning of long range plans that will be offset by change, which each of you must learn to manage, and indeed enjoy. jS . 9 . — 1 I j v 1 U j HHhHHI l QE Mr. B. Co-Ed Hi-Y To create, maintain, and extend throughout the home, school, and community, high standards of Christian character, is the purpose of the Co-Ed Hi-Y. To fulfill this purpose, the Co-Ed Hi-Y has had many projects. We give devotion each morning, the blessing at each lunch period, and a thought for the week in each room. The chaplain is in charge of each of these devotions and thoughts. We have also had several money making projects. The funds we received from these projects will go toward postal charges for sending personal hygiene packages to Viet Nam. This year, we are very proud of our club. We com- pleted our ACE rating in four months. To receive this, we gave a program for the PTA, had an Orientation and Induction Service, attended a District Conference, com- pleted our annual Christmas Community project, and acknowledged National Hi-Y Week. We feel that our Club has fulfilled its purpose to the highest degree. At this time both teams were considered top teams in the district. After a couple of beautiful defensive stands, Coeburn racked up two touchdowns on runs by Dean Buchanan and Tommy Aker to win the game 14-0. Coeburn 33 Haysi 0 In the first game of the season, September 2, 1966, Coeburn met the Tigers on their home ground. At the end of the first half Coeburn was ahead 7-0. In the last half, Coeburn outmanned the Haysi Tigers to roll up 27 more points to win the game. Rowland, Aker, Hicks, and Buchanan all made TD ' s with Buchanan scoring twice on a pass interception. J 73 Coebum 14 Norton 0 In the fourth game of the season, the Knight ' s offense b egan to show. Although the scoring was low, the Knights moved the ball easily between the twenty-yard lines and kept the Black Raiders in the hole all night. At the end of the first half the score was 7-0 with Tommy Aker making the touchdown. In the fourth quarter the Knights finished the scoring with Dean Buchanan carrying the ball across to make the final score 14-0. Coebum 14 Wise 12 Coeburn met Wise in our annual Home- coming game on October 7, 1966. After a score- less first quarter, Wise gained possession of the ball after a Coeburn fumble at their 11-yard line and scored 6 points. After receiving the kickoff from Wise, the roused Coeburn team scored on a 55 -yard pass play from Rowland to Linkous. Kennedy booted the extra point giving Coeburn a 7-6 advantage at halftime. In the first part of the third quarter Coeburn put seven more points on the board. Early in the fourth quarter Wise ' s offense marched the ball 60 yards for a TD making the score 14-12. Wise ended the game threatening to score again, but Coeburn ' s de- fense and the clock checked their advance and ended the game with a final score of 14-12. Coebum 28 Pennington Gap 14 The defense rose to the occasion when Bond scored his only points of the season by making a safety in the first quarter. The first quarter score was 8-0. The Knights scored two more TD ' s in the second quarter making the score 21-7 at halftime. In thelast half Coeburn scored seven more points with Pennington ' s Bobcats making a final tally to end the game 28-14. Coeburn 0 Pound 6 On September 29, 1966, Pound visited Coebum. After a strong defensive battle all night, in which Pound dominated the ball of- fensively, the Wildcats eked out a 6-0 victory over the Blue Knights by blocking a punt in the last 53 seconds of the ballgame. Coeburn 13 Ervinton 0 The seventh game of the season was with Ervinton ' s Rebels at Ervinton. Coeburn ' s offense had the best night of the season, picking up over 300 yards being led by Dean Buchanan with over 200 yards on his own. Tommy Aker scored the first TD for the Knights, while Bob Hicks intercepted a pass to make the final score 13-0. Coeburn 0 Appalachia 21 On October 21, 1966, the Appalachia Bull- dogs invaded Coeburn. The Coeburn Blue Knights were fired up and ready to go but could not con- tain the powerful Edward Cl ark, who gained over 200 yards rushing. Clark led Appalachia to a 21-0 victory over Coeburn. Thus far in the season, Coeburn ' s record was 6 wins and 2 losses. Coeburn 26 Powell 7 On October 28, 1966, Coeburn ' s Blue Knights again showed their ability to bounce back after a defeat by trouncing the Powell Valley Vikings 26-7 at Bullitt Park in Big Stone Gap. Aker, Rowland, and Buchanan all made TD ' s for the Knights. This game was one of the best rounded games of the season with both Coeburn ' s defense and offense showing superb execution. Coeburn 13 Gate City 27 On November 4, 1966, in the last game of the season, Coeburn entertained Gate City at Coeburn. The Blue Knights found it difficult to get started in the first half, giving up 21 points to the Devils. Coming back in the second half, with their offense and defense looking superb, Coeburn held Gate City to 6 points and scored 13 themselves. They ended the game threat- ening to score again, but it was too late. Gate City departed with a win of 27 to 13. Basketball Kneeling: Coach Ira Joe Lewis.
