OUR SCHOOL PROGRAM Coeburn High School offers training in academic subjects, business courses, music, home economics, and dis- tributive education. Too, the Wise Count y Vocational School, located at Wise, Virginia, is available to all the high schools in the county. Here the students may learn a trade while they are acquiring as many as four units toward graduation. Languages offered are English, Latin, and French. English is required of every student each year of high school. Teaching English are Mrs. Nancy Dotson, Mrs. Rita White, Mrs. Dorothy Quillin, Mrs. Marian Quesenberry, Mrs. Lowella Whittaker (who is our Librarian), Mrs. Betty Rothwell, and Mr. John Hamm. In addition, Mrs. White teaches Speech and Journalism. Mrs. Lila Johnson teaches Latin and French. The courses in history include World, United States, Virginia, and Wise County histories; also World Economic Geography, Economics, and United States Government. The instructors are Mr. Ben Spradlin, Mr. Hansford Welch, Mr. Robert Reasor, Miss Joan Roberson, Mr. David Ellison, and Mr. John Bogart. Mr. David Ellison, Mr. Lawton Addington, Mr. John Bogart, Mrs. Barbara Verthein, Mr. Burchell Stallard, and Mr. Spradlin teach the sciences which include general science, biology, chemistry, physics, and geology. In the field of mathematics we offer general mathematics, two and one-half years of algebra, plane and solid geometry, and trigonometry. The instructors are Mr. Lawton Addington, Miss Etta Hillman, Mrs. Judith Skorupa, and Mr. Henry Spangler. Mrs. Skorupa has a class of business arithmetic and Miss Hillman teaches one class of French. Miss Linda Stephens teaches the domestic sciences which cover sewing, cooking, marketing, and other home making activities. In business education we have two years each of typing and shorthand, one of bookkeeping, and one of business arithmetic. Teaching in this field are Mrs. Unita Odle, Mrs. Betty Rothwell, and Mr. Preston Salyer. Mrs. Avia Funk and Mr. Robert Nash teach physical education which is required of all eighth, ninth, and tenth grade students. Mr. James Jackson has charge of our Distribution Education program. In addition, he teaches retailing and general business courses. Mr. Stephen King directs our band, while Mrs. Virginia Counts and Mrs. Vera Atkinson teach piano. Mrs. Quesenberry, Mrs. Dotson, and Mrs. Johnson are our Guidance Directors. It is their responsibility to inter- view and help each student plan his course of study. Athletics are lead by Mr. Stallard who is head coach of the football and baseball teams. He is assisted in football by Mr. Nash. Mr. Ira Joe Lewis coaches basketball and track. He is also assisted by Mr. Nash. Mr. Terry Pope is in charge of our Junior varsity football program, and eighth grade basketball team. C 26
