On behalf of the Senior Class of ' 65 we would like to recall the memories during our five years at Coeburn High School. HANSFORD WELCH The twenty-eighth edition of the Re- flector is dedicated to one who has been of great service to our school and also to our community. He has been an industrious worker as a teacher and also has performed outstanding services as our assistant princi- pal. He is an active worker in his school and also in his church and community. He is well-liked by all the students at C.H. S. because he is always there to lend a helping hand. His gay and sparkling personality makes each student glad to be near him. For his services to our school, it is with the greatest appreciation and pleasure that the Reflector of ' 65 is dedicated to Mr. Hansford Welch. 6 h) Imm MISS EARLE McCONNELL A long time teacher at Coeburn Ele- mentary School was taken from us on February 24, 1965. She was a dedicated teacher, and a faithful and active member of Coeburn Methodist Church; being a valu- able member of the Church School, and the Wesleyan Service Guild. Too, she was an active member and officer of Coeburn Chapter of the Order of the Eastern Star. Too, the Wise Count y Vocational School, located at Wise, Virginia, is available to all the high schools in the county. Here the students may learn a trade while they are acquiring as many as four units toward graduation. Languages offered are English, Latin, and French. English is required of every student each year of high school. Teaching English are Mrs. Nancy Dotson, Mrs. Rita White, Mrs. Dorothy Quillin, Mrs. Marian Quesenberry, Mrs. Lowella Whittaker (who is our Librarian), Mrs. Betty Rothwell, and Mr. John Hamm. In addition, Mrs. White teaches Speech and Journalism. Mrs. Lila Johnson teaches Latin and French. The courses in history include World, United States, Virginia, and Wise County histories; also World Economic Geography, Economics, and United States Government. The instructors are Mr. Ben Spradlin, Mr. Hansford Welch, Mr. Robert Reasor, Miss Joan Roberson, Mr. David Ellison, and Mr. John Bogart. Mr. David Ellison, Mr. Lawton Addington, Mr. John Bogart, Mrs. Barbara Verthein, Mr. Burchell Stallard, and Mr. Spradlin teach the sciences which include general science, biology, chemistry, physics, and geology. In the field of mathematics we offer general mathematics, two and one-half years of algebra, plane and solid geometry, and trigonometry. The instructors are Mr. Lawton Addington, Miss Etta Hillman, Mrs. Judith Skorupa, and Mr. Henry Spangler. Mrs. Skorupa has a class of business arithmetic and Miss Hillman teaches one class of French. Miss Linda Stephens teaches the domestic sciences which cover sewing, cooking, marketing, and other home making activities. In business education we have two years each of typing and shorthand, one of bookkeeping, and one of business arithmetic. Teaching in this field are Mrs. Unita Odle, Mrs. Betty Rothwell, and Mr. Preston Salyer. Mrs. Avia Funk and Mr. Robert Nash teach physical education which is required of all eighth, ninth, and tenth grade students. Mr. James Jackson has charge of our Distribution Education program. In addition, he teaches retailing and general business courses. Mr. Stephen King directs our band, while Mrs. Virginia Counts and Mrs. Vera Atkinson teach piano. Mrs. Quesenberry, Mrs. Dotson, and Mrs. Johnson are our Guidance Directors. It is their responsibility to inter- view and help each student plan his course of study. Athletics are lead by Mr. Stallard who is head coach of the football and baseball teams. He is assisted in football by Mr. Nash. Mr. Ira Joe Lewis coaches basketball and track. He is also assisted by Mr. Nash. Mr. Terry Pope is in charge of our Junior varsity football program, and eighth grade basketball team. We were in charge of the Homecoming Dance and Homecoming Parade and half time show at the football game. We have had numerous projects. Our last project of the year was to send a boy and a girl to a college campus for Boys ' State. Our club has 55 affiliated mem- bers. The purpose of our Co-Ed-Hi-Y is to create, main- tain, and extend throughout the home, school, and community high standards of Christian character. The Co-Ed-Hi-Y is a religious club and we, as members, are dedicated to God in serving Him through daily devotion and prayer each morning at school. The club also gives the blessing before each lunch period; we are also responsible for presenting a thought every week. Our Santa Pal KiYuinri €« | The Keyette Club ' s purpose is to help in any way it can in the betterment of our school and community. The Keyetteshave many activities to raise money for helpful projects. The Club again adopted an underprivileged child at Christmas. As an annual project the Keyettes also deco- rated the classrooms and the halls. The Club entered a float in the Homecoming Parade which won first place. The theme of this float was Keys to Success, which means that success is within your reach if you will only work for it. We have, had several projects, which were selling reserve seat tickets and taking up tickets at the gate dining the foot- ball season as well as raising and lowering the flag each day. We also purchased a new state flag. Other projects were dress up day every other week, repainting of all room numbers and selling tickets to theKiwanis pancake sale on election day. We had our annual basketball game with the faculty and a basketball game with the D.E. Club. We also held several dances during the year with live bands. Two special dances were the Ring Dance for the Juniors and one honoring the Key Club Sweetheart, Linda Marcus. The club is composed of students taking first and second year Latin, or students who have completed two years of Latin. Our motto is Labor omnia vincit — Work conquers all. Each year the Latin Club raises money to have an annual party. This year we have chosen the Hawaiian Luau as our theme. Since that time the club has become affiliated with the state and National F. H. A. ' s. About five years ago, the F.H. A. Club sponsored a dance after the last home football game. Music was provided by the Blue Notes. On November 6 the D.E. Club challenged the Key Club to a basketball brawl . The exciting game ended with the victory of the D.E. Club. Profits made at the game were divided between the two clubs. Mr. Jim Jackson, the D. E. coordinator, and five D. E. members traveled to Clintwood on November 18 to a precontest meeting of all the district D.E. Clubs. The D.E. Club plans to send at least two students to compete in a six participant contest in the District Con- test Meeting and Leadership Conference in April with all expenses paid by the D. E. Club. EDDIE McFADDIN Eddie has maintained the highest average in his class and for this out- standing average, he has been honored as CHS ' s Valedictorian for ' 65. He has been an active worker in many clubs and activities. Eddie was also a mem- ber of the basketball team, and he has excelled outstandingly in math. He has proven himself to be a person of a superior nature, and we know that he will be a successful person. Good luck, Eddie! SUE DAVIS Sue is one of CHS ' s outstanding students. She has been excellent in her studies and has participated actively in extracurricular activities. During her high school years, she has been a member of the Student Council, Key- ette club, and on the Reflector Staff. She was also secretary-treasurer of the senior class. Sue will be an excellent worker in her chosen field. Good luck! DINAH EVANS Dinah is truly an excellent student. She has proven this by maintaining one of the highest aver- ages in her class. GARY TICKLES Gary is an excellent scholar and athlete. He has served as president of the Student Council, captain of the basketball team, and has been an active member and a great asset to several other clubs. May success and good fortune be yours, Gary! HELEN KISER Helen has been one of the best students ever to attend Coebum High School. She is president of her homeroom, secretary- treasurer of the French club, and a member of the Reflector Staff. She has maintained a high scholastic average all through school. She has been a hard worker for the Student Council by serving as president of her senior homeroom. She has been an active worker for the Knights ' Knews.
