DEAN OF WOMEN N These sTirring Times when we are Told ThaT The ouTlook oT The young people musT be changed, iT is indeed TorTunaTe ThaT The young are The very ones who can and do alTer Their ideals, Their Thinking, and Their ways oT living more easily Than any oTher group. In recenT years I have known many sTudenTs whose original plans Tor college have noT been realized, and yeT These same individuals have courageously devised, and ioyTully accepTed oTher plans. YouTh is idealisTic. The sTudenTs oT Today will rise To meeT whaTever challenge is adequaTely presenTed To Them. They are viTally concerned abouT economic and social readiusTmenTs. They are Thrilled aT The ThoughT oT Tackling diTTiculT problems. They are in many ways superior To The generaTions beTore Them. For insTance, Their sane and wholesome Trankness is someTimes sTrange To older people. They believe in The old virTues even Though These may be maniTesTed in new ways. lT The ouT- look oT young people musT be changed, Then iT is our responsibiliTy To help Them see The vision, and we can be assured ThaT They will Tollow iT. In a world wiTh greaTer opporTuniTy Tor leisure, There musT be greaTer appre- ciaTion Tor The richness oT liTe as revealed in a hundred diTTerenT ways. LiTe aT iTs besT can be achieved only wiTh The help and spiriT oT youTh. May our educaTion Tree us To enioy boTh work and play. May we never lose The eagerness and zesT oT youTh. May we Thrill To The challenge oT devoTing our besT TalenTs To The oTher ends Than privaTe gain. May we Teel as did RoberT Browning in The poem, Saul : Oh, The wild ioys oT living! The leaping Trom rock To rock, The sTrong rending oT looughs Trom The Tir Tree, The cool silver shock OT The plunge in a pool's living waTer ,... l-low good is man's liTe, The mere living! how TiT To employ All The hearT and The soul and The senses Torever in icy! Page I2 - DEAN OF COLLEGE HE preparaTion oT publicaTions oT a volume of This naTure is becoming increas- ingly valuable in The work oT The college. IT is a presenTaTion oT an aspecT oT educaTion which is considered so TrequenTly of Ii+TIe or no imporTance or exTra- curricular, buT should very properly be regarded as a viTal parT oT The college curriculum. EducaTion righTly conceived is, l believe, much broader Than direcTly relaTed To The work and lecTure room, laboraTory, and library. The college musT provide opporTuniTies Tor worThwhile conTacTs Tor iTs sTudenTs in a varieTy ol: relaTionships: Tor enTering The lives and ThoughTs oT oThers and Thereby enriching Their own. These conTacTs in classroom, in social acTiviTies, or in play. will enable all of us To grow in proporTion To our abiliTy and willingness To grasp and appreciaTe The lives and Thinking oT ofhers. I am sTrongly oT The opinion ThaT The colleges making ample provision Tor The rich campus experiences seT TorTh in This volume are The colleges more Tully iusTiTying Their exisTence. l.iTe is more Than The mere gaining oT daily bread, and college musT be more Than The acquisiTion OT markeTable inTormaTion. ConTacT wiTh people, growing ouT oT The varied life oT The campus is The process by which we broaden our horizons, enlarge our general knowledge, and become proTicienT in The business oT living TogeTher in muTual helpTulness. The inscripTion on a gravesTone in a ScoTch church yard records ThaT iT is Sacred To The Memory oT Tammas Jones, Who was Born a Man and Died a Grocer. No blame aTTaches To The man Tor becoming a grocer--The Tragedy is ThaT he ceased To be a man. LiTe on a college campus as porTrayed in This book is essenTial. lT serves To make and keep us human.
