DEDICATION MRS. HELEN DODGE There are some people who deserve a great deal of gratitude for all they have given for others. We, the staff of the 1970-1971 Chronicle and the senior class, feel that one of these people is Mrs. Helen Dodge, our class advisor and a true friend to each and every one of us. CHANGE IS FOREVER By Linda Stout Wc didn't know how long he'd been away; five, six years maybe. It didn't seem as if in an hour he would get off the train, then get on a bus that would take him to the outskirts of his home town. Home . . . green grass, rolling hills, fresh air, little winding dirt roads. Home, where he had left his waiting family and friends. Even years spent in that dark prison could never disillusion all the memories he maintained of that dear old place. How shocked everyone was when they saw him in court, the expressions on their faces. He could still hear the Judge saying, Five years at the most, four if you're lucky. The patient, ' longing letters that his folks wrote remained unanswered. He didn't even have the guts to write to his girl. After he got out, he couldn't face going back home, at least not right away. For two years after that torture he just bummed around from town to town, picking up what jobs he COuld get. If he could only get enough money to get back home . . . So he worked night shift here, day shift there, got laid off and applied again. Finally he had enough cash. It would be only days now and he would be there. He could already feel the ground beneath his feet when he stepped off the train and onto the bus. There were quite a few people on it compared to the usual number and the small destination. Look! Out there to the left was the old Weeping Willow Farm. It looked as if there were an addition added onto the bam and there were a lot more cows. The bus stopped. He quickly paid his fare and jumped off. The air seemed a little foggy al- though the sun was shining. There was a long hill he had to walk up and then he could view die whole town. His fast walk broke into a run, and pretty soon he was at the top of the hill. The town was still quite a ways off. In the distance he could see where the dirt turned to pave- ment. He started walking again. The field in which he and the gang used to play football con- tained a modem housing development. Three or four department stores and a huge grocery store stood where McCorcy's General Store used to be. As he walked up the street, he realized that he was among hundreds of strangers. The widened sidewalks were crowded. The sight of all the people sickened him. Whitman, Drury, McLane, Spring Street; that was his street. The crabby old lady's house that was on the comer was white now instead of green. Where was the old oak tree he and his friends used to climb? He was suddenly standing in front of his house. It looked rather rundown. He opened the gate slowly; six years was a long time. Well, it was now or never. He rang the doorbell. Presently a strange face opened the door. Arc Mr. and Mrs. Howard in? 'I'm sorry. You must have the wrong house, was the reply. PATRONS GREENS DRUGSTORE, Pittsfield, N.H. STUDENT COUNCIL, C.B.N.A. SPEARS GARAGE, CONCORD, N.H. MAJ. JAMES BENNETT R. J. SULVANIAN MR.
