Tina Hanson I, DARKNESS By Linda Stout '73 I rolled over in my bed. The scratch of the clean sheets tick- led my toes. The furnace had just clicked on and the smell of the dry, hot air filled my nostrils. Before I opened my eyes, I knew that it was still dark. It had to be close to midnight. My fingers groped to find the little alarm clock that stood on the edge of the nightstand. 1 felt the hands; it was one-thirty, if my fingers hadn't deceived me. I looked around me hoping to see some shadowy object to stare at until I could fall asleep again. SEE. What a beautiful word. After the accident I could still remember the doctor saying, You should be thankful. Some aren't as lucky as you. The marvels of modern man. Six months of total darkness before I could take off that dreaded eye mask. Six months before even the faintest ray of sunshine could fall on my precious eyes. The first month was the worst. I had to get used to the dark. Lying in bed all day, being waited on hand and foot. It made me feel like a cripple! Oh, you poor dear. What can I do to help? Instead of cheering me up, almost all of my visitors behaved as if I was a total invalid. 46 I, DARKNESS (cont.) Days passed, weeks, months — I completely lost track of time. My mind was totally unaware of the things that happened around me. I was aware only of the dark. It absorbed me and I was ab- sorbed in it. DARKNESS: an evil shadow lying like fog over all things. A heavy curtain that wouldn't tear and let the light in. From the day that the doctor let me take off the mask, I was always afraid of the dark. At night I used to have a lamp on until I went to sleep. Then my mother would come in and turn it off. It was as if this thing, darkness, would envelop me again and I would be left alone to stare into nothingness, my mind groping wildly for a way out. The shadowy object in the far comer of my room was distin- guishable as the first rays of a grey dawn slowly forced themselves through the curtains. The night has passed slowly for me. My mind was tired of thinking. My eyes were tired of staring into the darkness of the night. Everything blurred and I drifted into a dark and troubled slumber.
