1964 CHRONICLE COE-BROWN NORTHWOOD ACADEMY NORTHWOOD CENTER NEW HAMPSHIRE TO THOSE With proud hearts striving all to lend Their best to theirs and those Holiday happiness seemed to wend Its way through all hard woes. The small town cried, Our kids have won. All hearts were close and warm For e'en when we'd lost every one The town had cheered us on. All lights were lit and bells were rung Whole families gathered to sup Reward had come and in unison From cold winter, spirits rose up. Families worked and scrimped and saved And men spoke and signed names Our kids have won. They should be praised. The champs of the basketball games. And when all was settled and ready Jackets present -- the tables all set. All around the faces were steadied For our big moment — basketball banquet. 2 LAURIE BLANCHARD ADMINISTRATION TRUSTEES L. to r. : R. Caswell; R. Swain; A. McDaniels; S. Johnson; C. McLaughlin; W. Our first order of business was to elect class officers and the results were: President...........................................Richard Rae Vice President...................................Emerson Densmore Secretary.........................................Rebecca Johnson Treasurer........................................Margaret Johnson Student Council.....................................Beverly Ross .................................Kenneth Brackett The next event was our long-awaited and long-dreaded Freshman Initiation. During the day we found it was impossible to escape from the Superior Sophomores with their foolish little tasks for us to do. At night, we performed silly stunts to the delight of upperclassmen and parents. Boy, were we glad when that night was over! The seniors' Christmas dance was the first event to be held in the new gymnasium. Most of our class attended as it gave us our very first opportunity to demonstrate to everyone how grown-up we could act. Participants in sports this year were Susan Nelson, Margaret Johnson, Rebecca Johnson, Priscilla Twombly, and Beverly Ross in softball; in baseball: Emerson Densmore, Carl Elliott, and Daniel Stevens; in volleyball: Marga- ret Johnson, Rebecca Johnson, and Beverly Ross. Two of our classmates made the cheering squad: Laurie Blanchard and Rebecca Johnson. Emerson Densmore went out for basketball. We took part in the Annual Coronation Ball; our lovely candidate was Beverly Ross. Although she looked like a real princess, her classmates didn't sell enough chances and tickets so she came in fourth. The big event of the spring was our Freshman Social. We held a square dance under the direction of Bob Bennett. An evening of mixed square and regular dancing provided a fun evening for everybody. Also in the spring, we helped by serving as guides for the official dedication of the new addition to the school -- a task we all enjoyed. During the year, Mike Curran and Gerry Sly joined our class. SOPHOMORE YEAR At the beginning of our Sophomore year we gained nine new members. They were: Priscilla Farrar, Norman Dodge, Donald Hersey, Lorilea Jaderborg, Beverly Tuttle, Shirley McGowen, William McGowen, Dennis Schwab, and Thomas Veinote. A few days after school started, we elected the following officers: . . Richard Rae . . Susan Nelson Laurie Blanchard . . Mike Curran . . Beverly Ross . Dennis Schwab Participants in sports this year were the following: soccer -- Norman Dodge, Daniel Stevens, Red Densmore, Mike Curran, Richard Rae, and Ken Brackett; in volleyball -- Becky Johnson, Sue Nelson, Laurie Blanchard, Margaret Johnson, and Lorilea Jaderborg; in baseball -- Mike Curran, Norman Dodge, Carl Elliott, Ken Brackett, Red Densmore, Gerry Sly, Danny Stevens, and Richard Rae. Rebecca Johnson and Susan Nelson became cheerleaders. Rebecca Johnson and Margaret Johnson represented us in softball. President. . . . Secretary . . . Vice President Treasurer . . . Student Council 17 It was now our turn to attack the Freshman Initiation. We held a '‘mock basketball game with the boys play- ing against the girls. The attractive uniforms and skilled players made an interesting game. Our candidate for the Coronation Ball was Susan Nelson. The class really worked so that she became the Princess. Lorilca Jaderborg represented us in the Senior play, The Importance of Being Ernest. At the end of our sophomore year we had lost Lorilea Jaderborg. JUNIOR YEAR We returned as juniors with 20 classmates. Our only new member was Bill Rhoades. After getting readjusted to school routine, we elected our officers: President . . . . Vice President . Secretary. . . . Treasurer. . . . Student Council . Rebecca Johnson . Laurie Blanchard . . Norman Dodge . . . Mike Curran . Margaret Johnson Emerson Densmore On November 16, Norman Dodge, Laurie Blanchard, Rebecca Johnson and Margaret Johnson had the opportunity to display their acting talents in the Senior Class Play, Pudd'nhead Wilson. Rebecca Johnson, Susan Nelson, and Margaret Johnson helped the seniors with their yearbook. Our candidate for the Annual Coronation Ball was Laurie Blanchard. Through the support of her classmates, she was crowned queen, and what a beautiful queen she made! As in the two previous years, class members were active in sports. Margaret Johnson, Priscilla Twombly, and Rebecca Johnson made the volleyball team. Norman Dodge, Mike Curran, Danny Stevens, and Kenny Brackett played soccer. On the softball team were Rebecca Johnson, Shirley McGowen, and Margaret Johnson. Playing baseball were Kenny Brackett, Gerry Sly, Danny Stevens, Emerson Densmore, and Carl Elliott. On the girls' basketball team were Shirley McGowen and Margaret Johnson. On the boys' basketball team were Kenny Brackett, Danny Stevens, Emerson Densmore, Norman Dodge, Mike Curran, and Tom Veinote. This year, through the skillful playing of the team and the talented coaching of John Barron, the Coe-Brown team captured first place in the N. H. Class S Basketball Tournament. Thus, for the first time in its history, Coe-Brown's basketball team was the best in the state. In March there was a ban- quet held in honor of the team. Almost the entire population of Northwood and surrounding towns turned out to honor the boys and their accomplishments. Awards, trophies, and jackets were presented to the team members and to Coach Barron. 18 The highlight of the spring was the Junior-Senior Prom on June 6. Through the hard work of the class members, the gym was transformed into a thing of beauty. Our theme was Stardust” and a million and one silvery stars adorned the gym. Priscilla Farrar was chosen queen; her aides were Shirley McGowen, Laurie Blanchard, Rebecca Johnson and Margaret Johnson. By the end of our junior year we had lost Bill Rhoades, Gerry Sly, John Merrill, Richard Rae, and Beverly Ross. Severcnce. Nancy Linscott, 1962 Queen; Priscilla Farrar, 1963 Queen; James Small. SENIOR YEAR: At the beginning of our senior and final year we added Jimmy Foss to our class, making it 9 girls and 10 boys. Our class officers for the year arc as follows: President.............................................Norman Dodge Vice President................. ....................Margaret Johnson Secretary.........................................Laurie Blanchard Treasurer.........................................Rebecca Johnson Student Council........................................Linda DeButts ........................................Mike Curran The first event was the senior play A Pair of Country Kids. Seniors taking part were Susan Nelson, Norman Dodge, Mike Curran, Rebecca Johnson, Laurie Blanchard, Margaret Johnson, and William McGowen. Thanks to the fine acting of the entire cast and the expert direction of Mr. Perry, the play was a success. This year, as in previous years, we have had several money-raising projects: candy' sales, book sales and basket ball pens. As the mid-year approaches, we look forward to another great basketball season, the Coronation Ball, the Junior-Senior Prom, and all the activities of graduation week -- the most important of all, to our commence- ment exercises. 19 s E N I O R L to r: Evan Emerson; Priscilla Blanchard, Norman Dodge; Judith Brackett; Susan Nelson; Michael Curran; Rebecca Johnson; Margaret Johnson; Lauraine Blanchard; Peter Johnson; Cheryl Noyes; John Sherman; Susan Small; Mr. Perry; Patricia Curley; Frederick Fernald; Walter Thomas; William McGowen; Richard Shaw. 20 JUNIOR CLASS 1st ROW, 1 to r: Judith Stevens; Beverly Ross; Sandra Twombiy; Nancy Jenkins; Donna Gooch; Mrs. Burrill; Lorraine Laramee; Barbara Holmes; Jane Dalrymple; Susan Slade. 2nd ROW: Beverly McGown; John Pender; Dennis Tuttle; Gene Sly; Ronald Gardner; David Hoadley; Herbert Clark; David Mihachik; Richard Cunning- ham; Peter Johnson; Mary Jane Stevens. 3rd ROW: Elena Crummey; Linda Thomas; Jerilyn Baker; Sarah Low; Pauline Blanchard; Patricia Curley; Cheryl Noyes; Brenda Merryfield; Maureen McGown; Priscilla Blanchard Below, Patricia Curley, Treasurer, Jerilyn Baker, Vice-President.
