1961 CHRONICLE Coe—Brown Northwood Academy North wood. New Hampshire Dedication For being patient when we were impatient, For being thoughtful when we were thoughtless, For giving counsel when we were confused, For giving comfort when we were bitter, And most of all For giving of himself when we were inadequate, We dedicate the CHRONICLE, 1961, to our class advisor, Mr. Bryant 2 Coe-Brown Northwood-Academy New Addition Northwood Center, New Hampshire. On February, 1960 the hopes and aspirations of many citizens of Northwood and surrounding communities, met with initial reward at the groundbreaking ceremonies for the new addition to Coe-Brown Academy. Through the generosity and insight of the Trustees, and after months of planning, the new building was actually started. The first floor contains the entrance foyer and the spacious gymnasium- auditorium with its large stage and full sized basketball court. The semi-basement area is comprised of a modern science laboratory, three classrooms, a large agricultural shop and boys' and girls' shower rooms. The entire plant is modern and will afford a fine educational atmosphere. This modern plant affords excellent opportunities for approxi- mately 200 students and the introduction of a more varied curricular. Dedication Program April 21, 1961 8:00 P. M. Men said as they saw its beauty It shall never know decay. Great is thy skill, oh Builder; They fame shall endure for aye.” A teacher builded a temple With loving and infinite care. Planning each arch with patience, Laying each stone with prayer. None praised her unceasing efforts None knew of her wondrous plan, For the temple the teacher builded Was unseen by the eyes of man. Gone is the builder's temple Crumbled into the dust Low lies each stately pillar, Food for consuming rust. But the temple the teacher builded Will last while the ages roll, For that beautiful unseen temple Is a child's immortal soul. U U U --Unknown RALPH A. BOWIE Boston Conservatory of Music B.M.Ed. The odds were quite uneven--21 girls and 11 boys. The first thing on the agenda was to elect our class officers. We elected President: Thomas DeMeritt; Vice-President: Timothy Scannell; Mr. Bryant Secretary: Margaret Wallace; Treasurer: George Brackett; Student Council: Patricia Houlihan and Richard DeButts. Our Class Advisor was Mr. W. Edward Bryant. Those who took part in sports were: Basket- ball: Thomas DeMeritt and George Brackett. Baseball: Thomas DeMeritt, Thomas Collins, and George Brackett. Soccer: Thomas DeMeritt, George Brackett, Robert Ross, and George Stimp- son. Volleyball: Gloria Gagne, Katherine Sager, Gloria Florence, Margaret Wallace, and Bertha Braley. Softball: Gloria Gagne, Katherine Sager, Ruby Shepard, Gloria Florence, and Bertha Braley. Cheerleading: Judith Baker and Patricia Houlihan. Our most dreaded event of our four years at Coe-Brown happened on October 9, 1957; the Freshman Initiation. It was a little different this year for we were dressed up in costumes during the day. The costumes included everything from hip boots to bathrobes. That night we had to do the stunts thought up by the loyal Sophomores. We held one successful Record Hop. The one big event of the year was the Coronation Ball. Our candidate for queen was Shirley Smith. We are sorry to say that we came in fourth, we’ll try to do better next year. Katherine Sager represented us in the Senior Play. During the year we gained two new members, Robert Sleeper and Raymond Turgeon. We were sorry to lose these students at the end of the year, Marilyn Candeldari, Florance LeClair, Richard LeClair, Dorothy Lovely, Ray- mond Turgeon, and Robert Sleeper. History Everyone was excited and happy to get back to school for our Sophomore year. We returned with 27 members. The odds were getting better, 16 girls and 11 boys. The election of officers was as follows: President: Timothy Scannell; Vice-President: Thomas DeMeritt; Secretary: Patricia Houlihan; Treasurer: Judith Baker; Student Council: Lana Angwin and George Brackett. We were indeed happy to have Mr. Bryant for our Class Advisor again this year. Those who participated in sports were as follows: Basketball: Thomas DeMeritt, Timothy Scannell, and George Brackett. Baseball: Thomas DeMeritt, Timothy Scannell, and George Brackett. Soccer: Thomas DeMeritt and George Brackett. Volleyball: Gloria Gagne, Katherine Sager, Margaret Wallace, Bertha Braley, and Gloria Florence. Softball: Gloria Gagne, Katherine Sager, Ruby Shepard, Gloria Florence, and Bertha Braley. Cheerleading: Judith Baker and Patricia Houlihan. At the beginning of the year we gained Edward Fralin and Ernest Simoneau. Now it was our turn to be mean to the Fresh- men. We organized the annual Freshman Initia- tion, which was held on October 3, 1958. We thoroughly enjoyed having them do the crazy things that we had been urged to do the preceed- ing year. This year we were happy to be able to take part in the first Minstrel Show that has been pre- sented in a long time. It was put on by the Glee Club, under the direction of Mrs. Gfroerfer of Deerfield. It was a lot of work, but it was well worth it. Those taking part from our class were, George Brackett, Nancy Cheney, Romona Colpritt, Coronation Ball 13 Richard Graham, Timothy Scannell, Shirley Smith, and Margaret Wallace. Margaret Wallace represented us in Prize Speaking and walked away with first prize. Patricia Houlihan represented us in the Senior Play. Lana Angwin and Margaret Wallace took part in the Jr-Sr Play. The Coronation Ball was again a much awaited event. Our candidate for queen was Gloria Florence. We came in last again this year, but we haven't given up yet. Near the end of our Sophomore year we ordered our class rings. We though the time would never come. By the end of the year we were sorry to lose, David Brown, Patricia Carpenter, Thomas Collins, Ola Davis, William Stevens, George Brackett, Bertha Braley, Timothy Scannell, Marie Jacques, Romona Colpritt, Edward Fralin, Richard Graham, Ernest Simoneau, Nancy Cheney, George and Jennifer Laramee. Here we are eagerly back at Coe-Brown, with many ideas and hopes for our Junior year. Once again we elected our class officers. They were: President: Margaret Wallace, Vice- President: Robert Ross; Secretary: Katherine Sager; Treasurer: Judith Baker; Student Council: Lana Angwin and Philip Elliott. We were honored to have Mr. Bryant for our Class Advisor again. Those who took part in sports were: Baseball: George Stimpson. Basketball: George Stimpson. Soccer: George Stimpson and Robert Ross. Vol- leyball: Gloria Gagne, Katherine Sager, Marga- ret Wallace, Ruby Shepard, and Gloria Florence. Softball: Gloria Gagne and Katherine Sager. Cheerleading: Judith Baker, Patricia Houlihan, and Margaret Wallace. Our main problem this year was to earn money for our Junior Prom. We all put on our thinking caps and decided to sell book covers and magazines. We were very pleased with the results from our attempts. We were glad to gain James Brackett, Michael Ames, and Peter Witham. Our candidate for the Coronation Ball this year was Judith Baker. We were very happy that we came in second. During the warmer part of the school year we put on a food sale, which attracted many people to our homemade food; thus making a sizable profit for us. In the middle of October, our long awaited class rings came. They were worth waiting for. On May 6th we held our Junior Prom. We chose Lure of Paradise for our theme. It was a very successful affair. Reigning queen of the Prom was Shirley Smith. Her aides were Kather- ine Sager and Patricia Houlihan. We were proud to have two Girls’ State Representatives, they were Gloria Gagne and Shirley Smith. During the year we held two successful square dances. Gloria Gagne and Lana Angwin represented us in Prize Speaking. Lana Angwin, Patricia Houlihan, and Margaret Wallace took part in the Senior Play. Lana and Margaret also took part in the Junior-Senior Play. Lana Angwin, Patricia Houlihan, and Shirley Smith took part in the Woman's Club Essay Contest, and Lana proudly walked away with first prize. This was a very happy and successful year, but along with all the fun we regret that we lost, Gloria Florence, Ruby Shepard, James Brackett, and Peter Witham. For the last time we returned to Coe-Brown eager to make this the most progressive and happiest year of them all. We were in hopes to get into the new addition. Our class dwindled down to 14 members, 9 girls, and 5 boys. Our class officers are president: George Stimp- 14 son; vice president: Judith Baker; secretary: Patricia Houlihan; treasurer: Lana Angwin; stu- dent council; Margaret Wallace and Robert Ross. We are proud to have Mr. Bryant again for our class advisor. Those participating in sports are: Baseball: Thomas DeMeritt, Richard DeButts, George Stimpson. Basketball: Thomas DeMeritt, Richard DeButts, Robert Ross, and George Stimp- son. Soccer: Thomas DeMeritt, Richard DeButts, Robert Ross, and George Stimpson. Volleyball: Gloria Gagne, Katherine Sager, and Margaret Wallace. Softball: Gloria Gagne and Katherine Sager. Cheerleading: Judith Baker, Patricia Houlihan, Margaret Wallace and Lana Angwin. We again sold book covers and magazines this year. They were both very successful. This year we had an exceptionally good float. The theme was the ”1960 Olympics. We were proud to receive first prize. All the hard work and long hours put into the float were worth it. We were all especially happy to put on our Christmas Dance. It was held in the brand new gymnasium. It was a great success and all who attended thoroughly enjoyed themselves. The Senior Play this year was a big success. We put on Around the World in 80 Days, by Jules Verne. Most of the entire senior class took part in the play in some manner. Our DAR candidate is Judith Baker. Gloria Gagne represents the senior class as Miss Homemaker of Tomorrow. Thus, we conclude four happy and successful years; and we will always cherish the memory of them.
