talent show which was won by Joanne Tuttle. She played her saxophone. Our two candidates for Junior Prom Queen were Karla Neilsen and Faye Rol- lins. We were very proud of Marion Pease who was elected as Miss Hi-Hat at one of the socials the Juniors held. With graduation at hand again we were all looking forward to being “Jolly Juniors.” During the year we lost Roland White and Maxine Twombly. JUNIOR YEAR Starting our Junior year we were down to 13 members. During the summer we lost Rena Hodgdon, Elizabeth Wheeler, and Lawrance Tasker. Soon after start- ing though, we gained Bigelow Wood, Merton MacAdams, and Farrell Miner. Far- rell didn’t stay long as he left us to join the U. S. Air Force. We now had Mr. Sumner Allen as our advisor, and he proved to be our favo- rite. We elected class officers who were: President .................................................. Paul O’Neal Vice-President .................................. Marion Pease Secretary ...................................... Norene Holmes Treasurer .................................................. Faye Rollins Chronicle Reporter .............................. Norene Holmes Student Council Representatives ................ Dorothea Rollins Richard Ball For the first time we had a representative in every sports activity. In both cross country and basketball we had Bigelow Wood from our class. Bigelow Wood and Dick Young were on the baseball team. In softball Dee Dee Rollins, Marion Pease and Sylvia Shepard represented us. Marion Pease and Norene Holmes were cheerleaders and Nonie was elected to be in the state Miss Basketball Cheerleader Contest. Dee Dee and Faye Rollins and Carol Hammerstrom were on the volleyball team and Dee Dee Rollins, Sylvia Shepard and Norene Holmes were in track. On May 8, we held the annual Junior Prom. Music was supplied by Carl’s Cavaliers. The theme was “Tropical Paradise” and the orchestra picked Barbara Dee as queen and Norene Holmes as an aide. Both were from our class. Joan Mihachik, a sophomore, was the other aide. Dee Dee Rollins and Carol Hammerstrom were in the Prize Speaking Contest. Carol walked off with third prize. The title of her essay was “Mary White.” Faye Rollins, Carol Hammerstrom and Richard Ball were in the annual Women’s Club Essay Contest. Faye was unable to attend because of sickness. None of them won a prize but all did a good job. Faye Rollins and Marion Pease were picked by the seniors as usherettes for the senior play and Dorothea Rollins and Mary Lou Demmons were the marshalls for graduation. As we came to the close of our Junior year we said good-bye to Mr. Allen, our advisor, Sylvia Shepard and Merton MacAdams who finished out the year but did not return for our Senior year. SENIOR YEAR All too soon we started our last year at Coe-Brown. Although we all looked 9

CLASS HISTORY FRESHMAN YEAR The class of 1954 entered Coe-Brown Academy in September of 1950 with 23 members. We weren’t like other classes as we never were shy or scared. We started our first year by electing officers under the guidance of Miss Mabel Priestly. Our officers were: President ...................................... Richard Ball Vice-President ................................. Roland White Secretary ...................................... Marion Pease Treasurer ................................ Mary Lou Demrnons Chronicle Reporter ...................... Carol Hammerstrom Student Council Representatives ............. Maxine Twombly Richard Ball The boys this year weren’t very sports minded as we had only Roland White who was our representative in baseball. The girls did extremely well, however, as we had Marion Pease, Dee Dee Rol- lins, and Sylvia Shepard as regulars on the softball team. Dee Dee Rol- lins as a regular on the volleyball team; and Dee Dee Rollins, Marion Pease, and Elizabeth Lovely running in track. We also had Faye Rollins as a sub in volley- ball, Marion Pease and Norene Holmes as subs in cheerleading and Norene Holmes as a sub in track. We held two very successful socials during the year. As we came to the close of our first high school year we were minus three of our original members. We had lost Richard Witham, Roland Hodgdon and Donald Stevens. SOPHOMORE YEAR When we came back to school as “Silly Sophs” we were minus three of our former classmates. They were Elizabeth Lovely, Barbara Shepard and Lawrance T wombly. We elected our class officers for the year. Phis time they were: President ....................................... Faye Rollins Vice-President .................................. Richard Ball Secretary ............................................... Norene Holmes Treasurer ................................. Mary Lou Demrnons Chronicle Reporter ....................... Carol Hammerstrom Student Council Representatives ............... Dorothea Rollins Richard Ball Our advisor was Miss Shirley Taylor, later known as Mrs. Fountain. This year we didn’t have any boys in sports, but the girls once again made up for that. On the softball team we had Dee Dee Rollins, Marion Pease and Sylvia Shepard on the first team and Norene Holmes on the second. In cheerleading we were represented by Marion Pease and Norene Holmes. In volleyball there were Dee Dee and Faye Rollins and in track we had Dee Dee Rollins and Marion Pease. They both took first prize in the races they partici- pated in at Deerfield Fair. We held our two socials. One was our Freshmen initiation and the other was 8

forward to being Seniors, we kind of hated to leave. At Deerfield Fair we took first prize with our float. It was a ship, the “USS Northwood,” returning the service men and women from Korea. We had Mr. Leskowitz as our advisor and under his guidance wc elected our class officers. President ............................... Carol Hammerstrom Vice-President .......................................... Paul O’Neal Secretary ....................................... Marion Pease Treasurer ..................................... Richard Young Chronicle Reporter .................................... Norene Holmes Student Council Representatives .............. Dorothea Rollins Richard Rail Dick Ball was also elected president of the Student Council. Late in the fall, Dick Ball was killed in an automobile accident. Dick had been one of our class leaders and we were shocked and saddened by his death. Dorothea Rollins assumed his presidency of the Student Council and Bigelow Wood was elected to take his place as Student Council Representative. In sports we had Bigelow Wood in cross-country. We had Bigelow Wood and Dick Young in both basketball and baseball. Big was captain of the basketball team. In girls’ sports we were represented by Dee Dee Rollins and Nonie Holmes in softball, volleyball and track. Dee Dee was captain of both softball and volley- ball. In cheerleading we had Norene Holmes and Mary Lou Deinmons. Nonie head-cheerleader was once again elected to enter the state Miss Basketball Cheer- leader Contest. The Seniors took 2nd and 3rd prize in the annual Women’s Club E say Con- test. Carol Hammerstrom took 2nd prize with her essay about Indo-China and Norene Holmes was third with her essay about France. Faye Rollins also entered her essay but was unable to attend. Dorothea Rollins was elected by the class and faculty for the D.A.R. good citi- zenship award. We presented our Senior Play on the 24th and 25th of March. The name of it was “Meet Corliss Archer.” We had a wonderful time and the play proved to be very successful. As usherettes for the play we picked Ellen Lovely and Shirley Folsom from the Junior Class. We started working on the annual Prize Speaking Conte t. Mary Lou Dem- mons and Norene Holmes represented us and Mary Lou took 3rd prize. The name of her essay was “A Pair of Sexes.” Soon after, we started working on graduation. It was announced that Carol Hammerstrom was Valedictorian and Dorothea Rollins was Salutatorian. Faye Rollins was an honor student. For our Baccalaureate Services on June 13 and our Graduation Exercises on June 14th, we chose Eleanor Jacques as our marshall. The evening of our gradua- tion we had our annual senior reception. Our motto was “Too Low They Build, Who Build Beneath the Stars.” Our flowers were red roses and the colors were blue and white. For our class trip we went to the beach and then to a night ball-game. There are many more things that we remember about Coe-Brown, most of them good, but to make our four years successful, we all have a few bad memories. Now that we are out of school we find that most of the members of our class are going on to further their education. We certainly had fun and benefited by our four years at Coe-Brown Northwood Academy. Norene Holmes Bigelow Wood 10
