BANKS lectures The Scarlel Leiter. began Teaching, sTudenTs had a passive aTTiTude ThaT enabled Them To accepT whaT The Teach- er Told Them. STudenTs would do anyThing To geT a good grade. Then in The 60's and 70's kids asked why'? When a Teacher Told Them someThing, There was more inTellecTual sTimulaTion. Now, Mrs. Banks says, she sees a cycling back Towards passiviTy and saying anyThing for a grade. As far as changes in Teaching go, Mrs. Banks feels ThaT Things will change more wiTh The wides- pread use of compuTers. Also, re- search has given more definiTlon To Teaching meThods, whereas, in The pasT, Teaching was done by insTincT. Teachers Today know more abouT why sTudenTs learn The way They do. ln spiTe of The facT ThaT Mrs. Banks has read hundreds of nov- els, she was able To single ouT Two favoriTes: The Greal Galsby, and Deafh Comes for The Archbishop. Garsby, because of The beauTy of The language, especially The phrases and Dealh, because iT is a recipe for life and living. ThroughouT Mrs. Bank's life World War ll had a greaT influ- ence on her, and, she believes, on The whole naTion. World War ll changed our way of looking aT life and deaTh and war. We be- came aware of how cruel hu- mans can be. When asked whaT oTher oc- cupaTion she would like To be in Mrs. Banks replied Journalism , BuT in college The field was closed To women. Mrs. Banks has a simple, inTel- ligenT and healThy Theory on be- ing happy. Doing whaT you like To do, doing iT well, and being wiTh people you love. FaculTyfMrs. Banks Al

When asked why she ThoughT she was nominaTed for This award she replied, because my principal has faiTh in me. Mrs. Banks has been Teach- ing aT Cody High School for ThirTy years. When asked why she chose CHS she explained ThaT her husband was born in Wyoming, 40 FaculTyfMrs. Banks and had a dream To reTurn and live here. They chose Cody be- cause of The availabiliTy of jobs in boTh Their respecTive fields. She believes ThaT Cody has a beTTer educaTional siTuaTion, and more concerned parenTs who involve Themselves in The school Than do some oTher places. Also, while on The subjecf of good poinTs abouT Cody, Mrs. Banks ciTed Cody as being a good place To raise chil- dren, and described Cody as a beauTifuI, peaceful place. She believes ThaT The climaTe, which is jusT horrid, someTimes causes people To be sTronger and have rugged moral fiber. While There are many good poinTs abouT Cody, some characTerisTics ThaT Mrs. Banks does noT appreciaTe are The Tendency of The people To be clickish, clannish, and close-minded and The lack of access To culTural experiences. Teaching is whaT Mrs. Banks has always wanTed To do. She said This sounds so corny buT aT The beginning of firsT grade l ThoughT To myself This is really fun. ThaT is when I decided ThaT Teaching was going To be my ca- reer. ln The ThirTy years Mrs. Banks has been Teaching she has seen changes in boTh sTudenTs' aTTi- Tude and, in some ways, in Teach- ing meThods. In regard To aTTi- Tude changes by The sTudenTs Mrs. Banks feels ThaT she has seen a cycle of changes. When she
