They lacked the depth to win against some powerful teams in the conference but they still tried to show their spirit when on the court. Mr. Wertz was this year's coach for the Varsity team. He was helped by varsity manager Rosalie Schaeffer. The Junior Varsity was coached by Mrs. Kolbeck. unners Rack U The Miles The Cross Country team this year was one of the hardest working teams in our school. On the boys team there were 16 who went out and put alot of miles into each day. The girls had a smaller team but still worked just as hard as the boys. The two team had 2 top runners. For the girls, it was Kelly Ba tes, she has broken four school records, and has come in Ist in many races. The boys had Nate Thompson, who is a junior. He too has broken school records and has come in Ist in four races. The team was helped out by Coach Boehle, and Coach Bacus. He has brought in many new ideas and has introduced them into the girl 's basketball program. Returning on the coaching staff this year for the J. V. team is Miss Shawn Pettit. She and her sophomores are doing a great job. They are gaining much of the experience needed to come back with an even stronger Varsity team next year. Joe Sepulveda, Glen Isabel, David Stephens, and Dan Barber were Fortunate enough to participate in the State tournament. Glen Isabel was the only one to place with third. -' JV Wrestlers Tie It Up J. V. Wrestling The J. V. Wrestling team this year was composed of one senior, four juniors, and two sophomores. Each one was important to the team in their own way. Felipe Munoz, senior, helped get the boys into the competitive spirit by wrestling exhibition. Munoz had a I-I record. Richard Quiroz, junior, could very likely be seen on the varsity team as a senior if he keeps up his enthusiasm. Quiroz Hnished the season with a 2-3 record. Rick Bible, junior, has potential but needs to develop it. His record was 2-3 also. Ned Luthy, junior, was very competitive this year and many things are expected of him as a senior. Luthy had a 7-4 record. Eric Peterson, junior, improved tremendously during the season and should bring in many points for the varsity squad next year. Peterson had a 4-3-2 record. John Fritz, sophomore, was one of the young but aggressive wrestlers and looks to be a varsity starter next year. Fritz finished the season with a 4-5 record. Frank Villapondo had a 0-I record. Pan ther Marching and Under the direction of Mr. Bernard Curry, and lead by Drum Majorette .lulie Lingerfelt, the Panther Marching band takes the Held. Those words were heard by many as the band performed the half time show at all home football games. During the week of N.A.U. Homecoming the Panther Band was invited to march in the parade, and also perform the pre-game, along with several other high schools from through out Arizona. The Band also travelled to Snowflake in which they experienced a different kind of marching. In the mud, as it rained throughout the game and during their half time show. In keeping with tradition the band travelled to the State Fair on October 30, accompanied by Mrs. Curry, the Flag Girls, Twirlers, and the Pom Pon Girls for a day of fun and very little marching. With the help of Mr. Curry, the Panther Marching Band will continue to rate superior. Varsity Cheers Shouting it out, was not the only thing the Varsity Cheers did this past year. Besides working very hard to promote school spirit, they attended the NCA Cheer Camp Clinic at NAU this summer. For Hve days and nights the girls worked hard and it showed up. They brought back a spirit stick, a cheer placlc award and an NCA spirit megaphone. They acheived the prestigous spirit award by being Voted by fellow cheerleaders and the NCA cheers as the most spirited squad at camp. ,- Shout It Out! This year we also tried to improve and change the image of a Varsity Cheer. We tried being a little more carefree and giving it our all. We feel we acheived this, and hope that future cheerleading at C.I-I.S. will be as exciting and fun as it was this year for us. They send for pamphlets and other information to give you a good idea of your choices of colleges. They also work with students trying to help them End an occupation of interest. Counselors ha ve also prevented a great number of students from quitting school by one way or another. The counselors also take a big part in our extra-curricular activities.
