S 66444 The Sophomore Class is a little like the middle child-- neither the oldest nor the youngest. We are considered too young to be upper classmen and yet we don't want to feel like lower classmen. We were further handicapped by being the smallest class in school, but with the fine guidance of our sponsors, Mr. Dunn and Mr. Knowles, we carried our share of responsi- bilities very well. Besides the usual school duties, the sophomores held their own in sports, making all athletic teams. We also have helped to keep Coast Union standards high in music and scholastic achievement. We have contri- buted much to extra-curricular activities, such as the Town Meeting held in February. The year has ended now and we have come up another notch. We are looking forward to our Junior year, but our sophomore year, with both its good and its bad points, will be remembered for a long time. Class officers for the year were: President --------------- 1- Diane Backensten Vice-President and Business Manager ------- David Allison Secretary ------------------ Susan Shortridge Treasurer ---- ------ L ea Joy Bordegaray 17

One of the highlights of our junior year was the privilege of being able to purchase class rings. These rings signify that we are upper- classmen. Our goal this year was raising the funds for the junior-senior prom. To start the ball rolling, we held a Turkey Trot Dance and the appro- priate bird was raffled off. Also to reach this future goal, we had various food sales and we sold candy and soft drinks at the games. Another event that kept everybody busy was the junior play, The Inner Willy. This was a hilarious comedy about a. shy boy and his inner self. To our great pleasure, this was a smash hit. All these various undertakings led up to the junior-senior prom and banquet. The theme was Stairway to the Stars, which was carried out roman- tically in blue and silver. The class officers this year were Jimmy Evans, presidentg Bar- bara Righett, Vice-presidentg Rosemary Borges, Secretary, Paul Madonna, Treasurer. Our very helpful and understanding advisors were Mrs. Ethyl Winter and Mr. Luther Churchwell. We have had loads of fun this year and are looking forward next year to being mighty seniors! 16

It was a long, hard climb from the first year in grade school to the first year in high school, but we finally got here. We al- most turned around and went back though, when the seniors de- cided to dress the freshman girls in gunny sacks anf field boots, and the boys in shortie nightgowns and high heels for our initia- tion. The officers elected for the freshman class were: Dick Weiss, Presidentg Jean Evans, Vice-Presidentg Marian Takken, Secre- taryg and Nancy Dean, Treasurer. The first thing the freshman class did to raise money was to have a food sale and we had several of them throughout the year, which brought in quite a bit of money for us. We, also, spon- sored a show at the theatre in Cambria. Our dance, the Superstitious Stomp, was in April, yes, on Friday the thirteenth! Of course we had appropriate decorations for the date. We were glad our dance was a howling success, because it was our first. We really were a mess when we got back from the freshman's annual trek up the hill to paint the C and clean up around it. It looked like we had more paint on us than on the C . We had loads of fun though. In a few months we will be taking another step toward our education and we will be sophomores, watching the freshman initiation and remembering that just last year we were bowing to the seniors. 18
