Endless amounts of rain befell the valley, to the point of creating large, road-closing floods and considerable property damage, as evident by the crowd at the Desert Classic. 2 A RISING STAR. One ofthe fastest rising comic's this past year was Steve lVlartin, whose on stage antics were not only eccentric, but considerably funny. 3 A LEADER IS LOST, The death of Hubert Humphrey not only ended an era of great political power, but also brought to an end the life of one ofthe most influential men in America. 188 Current Events -2-' 'Liv F . 1 STRIVING FOR PEACE. Anwar Sadat will always be remembered for his actions in trying to settle peace with Israel and his Arab country Egypt. What began as one man's war, ended as an echo ofthe world. 2 SCARE ON BLOOD ALLEY. One ofthe top stories in our valley was the school bus crash involving many elementary school students. This news item not only terrified people, but led them to take action on expanding Hwy. 86, an argument that is still being battled right now. 3 A ONE WOMAN WAR. The impact Anita Bryant has made this past year, in her war against homosexuals, has been grand. Not only is she now one of the most hated persons aroung the gay community, but was voted Hlvlost Admired Woman by the Good Housekeeping poll. 4 EYEING THE GOLD. UThe Treasures of Tutankhamen was an exhibit many craved to see, due to its link to ancient Egypt. 5 DOES MONEY BUY EVERYTHING? South Korean businessman Tongsun Park brought back memories of Watergate, when he was accused of bribery. Curl ent Events 187

I la! I Yes, the 1977-78 year was a very busy one, and as we finish this four page section hopefully is has served its purpose. With this note, we toast in the new year that it may be just as excitlng, but with more happier notes. 4 THE KING IS GONE. Elvis Presley's death was a shock to the world as it came unexpectedly. The aftermath that followed was one of sorrow and remembrance. But the King's legend lives on. 5 STILL GOING STRONG. The controversial, Ugandan President for life, Idi Amin Dada is still making his impact felt on the world. His disappearance created chaos, his reappearance created scandal. 6 CAUGHT IN THE lVlIDDLE. When the coal strike began, many expected the worst. What started as a subtle demonstration, ended as one of the worst strikes ever staged. Many people felt the effects of the strike, especially those who relied on coal for heating, and many times they had no say so on the outcome. Current Events 189
