Reading is the basis for knowledge. There are some people who require attention in this area. Mr. McMullin teaches special classes to improve reading skills of the individual's prog- ress in the elementary grades. Mrs. Legters teaches secondary reading skills to those students lacking skills in this area. Vocabulary, comprehension and increased reading speed are three of her main objectives. Self-confidence built through oral reading is a major goal in her job. Without the valuable help of a guidance counselor it would be virtually impossible for a student to Fmd the answers to ques- tions he may have aboutxhis future or school status. Mr. Bensink is the man CCS students go to whether planning a high school schedule, considering and deciding about college applications or just needing a little reasurance. 26 SPECIAL SERVICES Mr. Ryder, our school psychologist, aids students to develop mentally and emotion- ally capable minds. His main purpose is to counsel the students and review their emo- tional problems so that they may become capable of achievement and active partici- pation in school activities.

Mrs. Fair performs the service of examining and cleaning students' teeth and promoting good dental hygiene. Ivan Heslink, CCS bus manager and mechanic, takes the responsibility for the transport of our students seriously. The repair and maintenance of the buses requires special care. Mr. Heslink maintains the buses for safe transport to and from school in addition to games, field trips and other school ac- tivities. 27 Safety, though not always practiced by our stu- dents, is the concern of our crossing guard, Mr. King, who protects our students while crossing the main street in front of our school. A student cannot be expected to maintain a high level of scholastic achievement unless he is physically and mentally capable. Dr. R.X. Williams, Sr., the school physician, gives physical examinations and holds clinics bene- ticial to the students. Miss Lanston, the school nurse, is always here to do anything she can to assist the student with his health problems. Among her usual duties, she also gives eye and ear examinations and can ad- minister first aid in emergencies.
