P am Brugger CLYDE HIGH This is our school. In this building we have spent a major portion of our lives. Here we have the opportunity to prepare ourselves for the future. What is done with that opportunity is for each student to decide for him- self. Just what does this building mean to you? Your answers to that question might well determine the type of character mold that you have made for yourself. Let's take a look at the interior of our school where we find what makes it more than a building. The heart of our school is the will to learn. You can hear its pulse beat in the know- ledge that comes from that willing- ness. If our school could speak, it would tell a story that has effected thousands of Clyde High students both past and present. But wait a minute! Our school can talk! This book that you have in your possession right now is its voice. If you listen carefully, you will be able to hear its voice on the following pages. Let's see what it has to say about the school year 1958-1959. GGL I9 9 Dedication This year the class of "59" is happy to dedi- cate our 1959 Courier to Mr. Arthur W. Hend- ricks. We are proud to say that Mr. Hendricks has been associated with Clyde High School for nearly 21 years. During that time he has done much to promote our athletic activities. He was born in Harrod, Ohio, and received his high school education in Findlay. He enter- ed Ohio University in 1927 and graduated in 1931. He participated in such sports as tennis, football, and wrestling. He began his teaching career in Gibsonburg in 1931 where he taught for three years. Then after teaching at Ada, Ohio a few years, he came to Clyde in 1938. He received his Master Degree for Education from Ohio State in 1941. Mr. Hendricks is not only a successful athletic advisor and coach, he also sells insurance on the side. And in addition to all this, he supervises activities at the Clyde Community Park. One of his many outstanding accomplishments would be the fact that he is responsible for the first lighted football field in this area at Gibsonburg. In all sincerity, we the Seniors of "59" thank Coach for all he has done for the students, the school, and the community. These are the members of the Clyde Board of Education, seated from left to right: Mrs. John Jackson, John Romeo, John Dawley, Rush Richmond - clerk, Al Coleman, and Gordon Tarris. Superintendent This is our Superintendent, Mr. Virgil J. Briegel. He has done a fine iob of maintaining the high standards of our school, and of heading the school to the best of his ability. Board of Education Principal Mr. Wilbur Sanvis, the principal of ou.r school, works many long, hard hours to perform all of his duties. Judging by his ability, and the results shown, you would never know that this was his first year on this iob. TEDCA BAKER JEAN BARNES JAMES L. BOUNDS English ll 81 IV, Junior Class Sponsor, F.T.A. X L,-skWKbxkS MW -1 -v W-R -, W 30 Moments to Remember lt was a warm fall day way back in i947 when we tearfully left our mothers at the door of our first grade rooms. What a sad, yet happy, day. The only reason we agreed to stay was because of the promise to teach us to read. The most popular teacher that year was Mrs. Miller, and everyone who got her was deemed "One of the most fortunate." Remember the wonderful games we played in second grade? There was old witch, high water, low water, and sliding down the coal ramp on icy days. Also there was the crystal, carrot, and sweet potato gar- dens in Mrs. Boyer's room. ln the third grade we were entertained by magnificent puppet shows. Hey, Pam, how is your Scottish brogue? Then the fourth year of our confinement. This year we were a bunch of first prize pumpkin heads. Re- member Mrs. Wiley's paddle? How about it Ralph, Fran, Terry, and Don? By the way Carl, what did you ever say to get out of it? In the fifth grade we gave our first stupendous performance. lt was a darling Thanksgiving Day play about a colonial tea party. Really a smash hit-running for two days and four home rooms. Our sixth grade year is one we shall never forget. Mr. O'Harrow's room was one of constant activity. We were Kings and Queens, and we certainly had a royal time. Those who haven't yet broken the habit of saying ain't, couldn't have been in his room. Every week we had a talent show with semi-finals at the end of each six weeks. Who could forget "Show Boat?" lt was our best in our dramatic attempts so far. Also we are sure many girls will recall the fact that Scott Schell and Charles Young were the main cause of many a throbbing heart. The big fad this year was dog collars. ln all sizes, shapes and colors, every girl had to have one. Are you still carrying the clarinet cases Terry? Also Kaye, are the rates still the same for a shave and haircut? Of course, no one will ever forget our first boy and girl party at Bill Strong's house. Now we embarked upon the seventh grade. What a big disappointment-no recesses. But then our first experience of changing classes helped to make up for it. Do you remember Miss Ferninburg? She sat all the cute boys in the front, and the poor girls got ignored for the rest of the period. Finally we were mighty Freshman-in High School at last! In this year we had as many parties as par- ents would stand for. They consisted of such educational activities as spin the bottle, elevator, post office, and who could hold the longest kiss. Also this was the year of our first Christmas Formal. Our Sophomore year went by quickly, for Marilyn Moser came to town. Slumber parties were the big thing on the agenda. Boy, Caren and Alice, you must be quite experienced at that sort of thing by now. This was now our glorious Junior year., What a thrill it was to select and receive our beautiful class rings. Then was our Junior class play, "Around the World ,in Eighty Days." Did anyone ever win at those poker games between scenes, Jim, Ann, and Kit? Are you still in the practice of killing Indians with one blow, Russ? Say Pat, are you going in the Olympics as a broadiump champ now? Mary, you sure did a good iob of keeping the boy's morale up at play practice. Of course, you will never forget our marvelous prom. lt was the greatest moment of our lives as we crossed the little white bridge, and entered an atmosphere of romantic moonlight at "Tropicana." Sandee will be able to start a Matchmakers Society after all her experience on the date committee. Poor Cheryl is probably still tearing her hair out after the iob of organizing all those committees. At the end of our Junior year who can forget the terrible collision on Main Street. Caren, Linda, Cheryl and Pill will never forget the car wash they were advertising for when the whole thing happened. Now, believe it or not, we are the unconquerable Seniors. This is the year we will always hold above the rest-a year dear to our hearts, for it is our year of lasts. Our last formal, the wonderful prom "Southern Rhapsody," our last play "The Unguided Miss," yet still the first and foremost in our hearts, Our motto is "lf God be for us, who can be against us?" The class song is "Beyond the Blue Horizon." ,a is ' Girls, have you heard about Genrude? Chalk, Gradehooks, and Bobby-Sox This year the F.T.A. has been a beehive of excitement. Mrs. Baker, their sponsor, has truly made this club into an organization of doing. As one of their proiects they had a bake sale to collect funds to help the School for the Retarded. You may walk down a grade school hall and think that either the grade school children are larger, or the teachers are far younger. You would be wrong in both instances, for the F.T.A. members are really beginning to get practice for their future occupation. They have been helping the grade school teachers with different classes. This year has been an active one for the Future Teachers. The officers are: Cheryl Kuns-President, Frances Czako-Vice-Presi- dent, Kaye Brininger-Secretary, Faye Brininger-Treasurer. The FFA is an intra-curricular part of vocational education in agriculture in the public school system. The local chapter operates a farm for the purpose of giving its members practical experience, operates a credit agency to finance members' 'pro- iects, operates a thrift bank, and participates in many iudging contests on county, district, and state level.
