Mr. West has, as our class sponsor, given much of his time in assisting us with our class projects. He also has, as a friend, helped us work out some of the many problems which confront high school students. Mr. West was born in York, Pennsylvania. There he graduated from William Penn Senior High School, and then attended York Junior College. He furthered his education at Ohio University in Athens, Ohio Where he majored in English and received his BSED degree. Mr. West was a member of the Tau Kappa Epsilon Fraternity. He did his graduate Work at the University of Wisconsin and Western Reserve in Cleveland where he received his Masters Degree in Library Science. Mr. West taught at Caledonia High School before coming to Clyde. He also served five years in the United States Air Force. Outside of his school activities Mr. West enjoys dramatics, reading, music, and athletics. Again, we express our thanks and appreciation to Mr. West for his out- standing work for us and our school. 4 pg flow 4 Af 0 pw iz 74' 4 ca iffy N L lf W VIRGIL J. BRIEGEL Saporin tendon! s DR. WM. We are very fortunate to have the benefit of their co-operation in educational guidance in our social as Well as scholastic activities. We, the Seniors of '55, truly thank Mr. Briegel and the Board for their invaluable services that they have so willingly and successfully performed. We can honestly speak of them as fine leaders for both our school and our community. In Memoriam The death of Dr. Cozad was a great loss to our school as well as to the community. Dr. Cozad was vitally interested in our school and its problems. This interest was reflected not only at Board of Education meetings, but also in his fre- quent attendance at our school functions. He will be long remembered in Clyde, both as a community leader, and as a valued friend. CLASS FLOWER Blue Carnation CLASS COLORS Blue and Silver SENIOR CLASS HISTORY About 1937 a great event occurred! The graduates of '55 were born. We started out in the first grade with Miss Wehr, Miss Cleveland, and Mrs. Grey as our teachers. In the second grade we had our great toy band and most of us had Miss Bertha as our teacher. In the third grade We were playing high water, low watern and had lots of fun going to the movies and, Oh! How the boys enjoyed crawling under their seats and scaring the girls! You should have heard those girls squeal! This year is when We were really just beginning to Write. A new subject came up in the fourth grade -Geography! with Miss Rule as our teacher. About this time is when we began to play Chase and having loads of fun, especially when the boys caught the girls, fremember what happenedj ? This year We also had lots of fun when we Went to the zoo in Toledo. Mrs. Greek liked to read us stories in the sixth grade, and liked us to try to touch our toes so she could exercise her paddle. What about the time when We were all busy pick- ing up the beads that Mrs. Greek had lost from her necklace! By the way, how about some of the coinci- dences when Don Taylor's tongue froze to the slide on the play ground and Tom Smith's froze to something else. Wasn't it Donnie Taylor Who also took all the boys' pants? What a disaster! ! Senior Class History Then finally, we made the long trip be- tween the two buildings into the high school building where we thought we were really DOOMED. Mr. Moist helped most of us and tried to get us situated and to boost our morale. Boys, do you remember when Miss Van Thorn tried to paddle Bill Rathbun all the time, but she never did get around to it, and when Phil Broad put salt in her tea? In the seventh grade, the girls gave our teacher and the home room mothers a dinner. This year is when we also produced our great operetta Sourwood Mountain. And how much fun we had with it! We were very unfortunate to lose one of our members, Gary Strecker. We were now in the eighth grade and had lots of fun, especially the hayride we had. At last we entered our first year of Senior High. We were the great Freshmen of Clyde High. We thought We were big, but there were still three other grades towering over us, which we had to conquer. We began to havf' some big parties and some money- .V -king ordeals. That year, for the Junior Prom, most of us signed up to serve, and the Juniors drew the names from a hat. Those lucky ones were: Carolyn Mesnard, Virginia Mesnard, Sonja Norman, Carol Rakes, Phil Broad, Roger Kuns, Lowell McRobi. 7. and Tom Smith. As Sophomores, we had a new, interesting subject, Biology! And can you remerr' er those great cats? Ugh! This year our World History class went to the Toledo Museum. By the Way, do you remember when Carol Grey cut her hand? We finally reached the year we had been waiting for, the Junior year. We sold so many things this year to build up our treasury for the Junior Prom, amon'g which were: Moth- er's Day Cakes, Christmas Wreaths, and plenty of bake sales. With all the money we had earned in our past years, we gave the great Junior-Senior Prom, with the theme being, A Night in Granada. We also gave the great Junior Class Play, Room for One More, which was a huge success. This is the year when we received our beautiful Junior Class Rings. ln the middle of the year all the Juniors along with the Seniors went to Gib- sonburg High for the Annual Career Day. Here is the year! Our Senior year, which in this year, the S standing for Salesmen! We sold billfolds, season basketball tickets, book covers and gave movies, bake sales and dances. We won S50 for being the highest class of salesmen in the annual magazine drive. After many of our football games we had a lot of parties and oh, the fun! Our Senior Play to be presented is entitled, The Man Who Came to Dinner. Remember the first night of play practice when Mary Atkins dropped her glasses in the sewer up- town? We are hoping for a successful play and looking forward to the Senior Assembly and the wonderful Senior Class Trip. We shall graduate this year of 1955 and in leaving, all the seniors from A to Z will miss good ole' Clyde High and look back on it as memories to remember and to thank every- one for the fine education and co-operation that was given to us. We all can truly say, We've had a wonderful time. We hate to say good-bye, so we will just say, We'll be seeing you! 0, - 5555 V! ,, Ay Xi f' ' X fx F ' ,... 1 at f f Xu 0 M EL y 1 XXXQQ Juniors J 31, ' , ,3 s ' Q fn: il? . . This year's staff had all of the usual problems plus sev- eral added unusual and serious situations to deal with. The seriousness of these problems was felt by all concerned. The financial situation is at present a cri- tical problem. The poor showing on the magazine drive, the high cost of production and printing, and the lack of sources of added revenue have placed the yearbook finances in a most serious condition. Space is another seemingly unsolvable problem. The school population is growing at the rate of fifty students per year. The number of classes, organizations, and activ- ities is increasing accordingly. The size of the book is based on needs of three years ago. Yet, there is no possibility of increasing the size so long as our financal condition is not relieved. The result is crowding and omitting. Despite these troublesome situations, the staff has once again published a work of quality, a tribute to our school. Meet The Staff Mr. Koester, Molly Freese, Tom Smith CO-EDITORS - Mollie Freese and Tom Smith shared the responsibility of planning, organizing assignments for preparing and assembling the material for the book. The results speak for themselves. As in the past the editors have placed a real chal- lenge in the hands of future yearbook staffs BUSINESS and FINANCE - Faye Leber, Marilyn Murphy, and Dianne Simon proved to be a most valuable trio in dealing with the problems of their department. Faye served as my business typist. She also assisted Marilyn in the preparation of all typ- ing needed in the yearbook layout. Dianne Worked hard to keep money in our treasury and to keep our bills paid. She headed the magazine and yearbook drive. Marilyn Murphy, Dianne Simon, Faye Leber. X u. Class Editors - - Ann Kochendoerfer and Sonja Norman had charge of all classes. Their job in- cluded senior writeups and identifying and arranging of all other classes. They also worked up the senior class history. Art and Sport Editors-- ! -Q. Frank Humberger Carol Behnke The staff worked together well and helped one another a great deal. Many of the old faithfuls spent as much or more time helping fellow staffmembers, as well as they did on their own assign- ments. I greatly appreciate the work that each and every member put into this book. Certainly, the school owes these people much appreciation for this symbol of the 1954-'55 school year. Sincerely PAUL R. KOESTER Yearbook Advisor Sonja Norman Ann Kockendoerfer Carol Behnke and Frank Humberger handled their assignments most satis- factorily. Carol was responsible for the beautiful division pages and for arrang- ing and identifying the organization sec- tion. Frank worked tirelessly on his job of squeezing the ever increasing sport department into a shortened page al- lotment. Photographers - - George Brutcher and Clarence Jones supplied prompt and efficient results for our informal picture needs. About T he Choruses The High School Choruses total enroll- ment is approximately one-hundred and sixty. There are three different groups, the eighth grade chorus of fifty-five members, a Freshman-Sophomore chorus of seventy members, and a Junior-Senior Choir of thirty-five members. To be a member of the Freshman-Sophomore chorus, one must first sing in the eighth grade chorus, or have a tryout. To be a member of the J unior-Senior Choir, one must have at least one year in the Freshman-Sophomore Chorus and have a tryout. The main functions of the Choruses are, The Christmas Concert, a Winter or early Spring Concert, and a late Spring Concert. Other programs are also participated in by at least one group, such as the Thanksgiving Assembly, the Christmas Assembly, and Bac- calaureate Services. This year some of the chorus members attended the district Band and Chorus Contests, at Bascom, but only as spectators. It is hoped that the J unior-Senior Choir will be able to participate in the con- test activities by next year. Ensembles his I' ... Q is CLARINET TRIO CLARINET QUARTET Larry Thompson. Then a band of 27 members, it has rapidly grown to membership well above 80. The entire equipment of the band consisted of eight worn out musical instru- ments. As the band had no uniforms, the Clyde Exchange Club put on a cam- paign and bought the first 50 uniforms. It was at the conclusion of this campaign that the Music Association of Clyde Schools was formed for the purpose of supporting the band by raising money to keep the band properly equipped with instruments and uniforms. The Music Association inaugur- ated Band Tag Day, an annual affair that Clyde people have donated approximately S2000 each year. The eight worn out instruments have been replaced by 104 instruments, many of them of the finest makes. They are used in the High School Band, in the Junior Band and as training instru- ments. Uniforms have been added until at present We have over 90 with Mrs. E. H. Whittaker, the able caretaker. The music room was remodeled and a storage room and two practice rooms added during the recent building program. For the last several years the band has appeared in uniform between 40 and 50 times each year. Their fancy marching on the football field and also in parades plus the bands fine contest record has made the band so popular that they are unable to accept all the invitations to play which they receive. The band serves Clyde first and then accepts other engagements until the schedule is full. Coming from the membership of the band are many fine solos and en- sembles. As this book goes to press twenty such solos and ensembles have made the I Superior rating at the District contest. These small groups and solos are much in demand during the school year by the various clubs and organizations of the community. It is the wish of the band and their directors that they may continue to serve the school and community well enough to merit their continued support. Future opponents of the Fliers will probably remember several of the youngsters who performed so Well while they were young and inexperienced. The 1954 season marked the first loss in dual competition in five seasons to a well- balanced and well coached Willard High School team. The Fliers entertained Upper Sandusky in the opening meet and scored an impressive 77 l!5 to 40 1X5 victory over the Wyandot County Team. Upper Sandusky has never defeated Clyde in a track meet. The Blue and Gold thinclads next entertained their cousins from Sandusky St. Mary's and Won as they pleased 105 to 13. Tougher opposition faced the Fliers as Port Clinton came to Clyde and went home behind in score 52 to 28 after an abbreviated meet due to rain. The Fliers then went down to defeat at Willard 71 1X4 to 46 3!4. The Willard Track- sters are scheduled to come to Clyde in 1955. The Clyde Relays saw the 1953 State champions, Clyde win over the 1954 state champions, Nevada by a single. The Sandusky Bay Conference Meet, hav- ing been won by the Fliers for three consecu- tive seasons, saw a new champion in Oak Har- bor. The Rockets have been looking at the heels of the Fliers for several seasons. The more experienced Oak Harbor team won the District Track Title with the Fliers Winning a runners-up spot. The 1955 Fliers have a possibility of 31 let- termen ready for competition in dual meets which will probably be Willard, Port Clinton, plus another class A school and the maj or en- gagements Which Will include the Clyde Re- Major track engagements participated in by Clyde: Clyde DeVil- state district Relays SBC biss 1939 3rd 1940 lst 2nd 1941 2nd lst 2nd 1942 6th 3rd 1943 2nd 1944 2nd 1945 lst lst lst 1946 3rd lst lst lst 1947 2nd lst 'lst 1948 3rd lst 3rd 1949 7th 2nd 3rd 1950 2nd 1st 4th 1951 2nd lst lst lst 1952 5th lst lst lst 1953 1st lst lst lst 1954 2nd lst 2nd 1954 CLYDE FLIERS TRACK MEET RESULTS Clyde 77 1!5 ........ Other members of the team batting over .300 were Bob Gray .365, and Bob Metzgar .310. John Fiser, Louis Keegan, and Paul Roth each scored 7 times to lead in. that department. Lefty Bob Gray was the ace of the mound staff, allowing no earned runs while winning 6 and losing 1. Bob compiled 95 strike outs in 46 innings pitched and gave up but 12 hits. Gray and second baseman Bob Michaels completed their fourth year as regulars. Also leaving the Fliers through graduation are catcher Paul Roth, first baseman John Fiser, shortstop Norm Thayer, and outfielders Louis Keegan and Dean Ernsberger. 1 I954 Baseball Record 1955 BASEBALL SCHEDULE 5 Win 2 LGSS Clyde ........ 3 St. Joe ..... . Q Football Comments The 1954-55 football season was not a complete success in the win and loss column, as we ended our season with a four win and five loss record. But as far as co-operation, spirit, and teamwork, the season was a winning 0116. The boys, with a few breaks their Way, could have won three of the four games that they lost. Only in one game did I feel that we were completely out-manned and out-played. At no time during the season did our boys give up or quit. They were always trying, and as long as boys try to do their best, that is all you can ask. We have many vacancies to fill on our team for next year, as we lose twelve seniors. But if the spirit, determination, and teamwork continue to improve, Clyde will soon have better football teams. We were fortunate to have one boy, Frank Humberger, make All-Con- ference Offensive and Defensive Tackle. Only through hard work, desire, and determination can We help to improve and accomplish winning teams at Clyde High School. I wish to thank the coaching staff, the students, faculty, and other follow- ers of our teams for their co-operation throughout the football year. V , wg , , 5. wx Y L if an Basketball The 1954-55 basketball season, although not a great success in the matter of wins, was one that would be hard to match in the amount of thrills provided. Five games were decided in the last minute of play, one in overtime. . The pattern of the play for the season was set from the start with the Fliers winning a game and then losing one. If the Fliers could have shot with a greater degree of accuracy and consistency, many of the close games would have ended in victories. Although there were disappointments during the season there were also some highlights for which the boys deserve credit. The defeat of Castalia for the first time in sixteen years and defeat of Sandusky St. Marys for the first time after twenty-one straight losses in previous years were very happy moments for the Fliers. Then two games later the rout of Gibsonburg showed what the Fliers could do when they had their shooting eye. The one point loss to St. Joe was one of the finest played basketball games of the season which could have been a win with just a little smile from Lady Luck. Eight letter men will be lost by graduation from this year's squad are Jim Stevenson, Bill Taylor, Mike Tilrico, Bob Metzgar, Don Fought, La Mar Fredericks, Bob Streeter and Cliff Doebel. Returning lettermen will be Bill Dencer, Harold Jennings, and Norm Noss, forming a nucleus for next years squad. The squad elected Jim Stevenson and Bill Taylor honorary co-captains for the 54-55 season. Jim Stevenson received the trophy for the outstanding senior and also a trophy representing the honor of being selected All S.B.C. second team. The award for highest foul shooting percentage went to Bill Taylor and Norm Noss. So as we write Finis to the 54-55 basketball season we hope that something greater than just a record of wins and losses was realized by this group of boys. NOT IN PICTURE-Joyce Fultz. The agenda of the All Sports Team of the Girls' Athletic Association has been very suc- cessful this year. The season was initiated in Bellevue with a Quintangular meet involving Clyde, Fremont Ross, Norwalk, Sandusky, and the host, Bellevue. On January 25th the team visited Genoa for a basketball game. The Clyde Reserves were vic- torious, 28 to 25. However, the Varsity was de- feated by the Genoa squad, 20 to 13. Clyde High School was host to the Woodville girls on February 3rd. ,Included in the program was volleyball, basketball, rope jumping, danc- ing and tumbling. A very agreeable social hour followed. One of the highlights of the year was a trip to Oberlin College to witness the traditional basketball game of the Oberlin College Coeds. This game involves two chosen girl teams who play under the names of Princeton and Yale. Sports Day at Norwalk was held on February 19th. A team combined of Sophomores and Juniors from CHS, defeated the Norwalk High School girls, 38 to 4. Woodville High School returned the gracious- ness of the Clyde girls by inviting the squad over to the Lime Village. After a competitive volleyball game, in which our girls were victor- ious, the teams divided into an intra-squad affair. The social hour was delightful and en- tertaining. ' There are plans ahead for a return game with Norwalk and a Play Day to be held on the ath- letic grounds. ,. 5 vfbf 5, 515 T n M k , My if . i 5 E L x-vw -4 f -amateur 4 an ea- ' , J, , . .
