The class oi 1953, in tribute to one who has given so much oi her time and ettort in our behalf, take great pleasure in dedicating the 1953 Courier to our former Sponsor, Miss Bernice Stacy. Born in Bowling Green, Miss Stacy received her high school training at Rossiord High School, and continued her education at Ohio Northern, Bowling Green, Ohio State, Chicago, and Toledo Universities. Before coming to Clyde, Miss Stacy taught in several of the Wood County schools, in Perrysburg, and at one time, served as a tutor in the Big Sister's Home at Columbus, Ohio. Outside of the classroom, Miss Stacy enjoys playing the piano, dramatics, traveling, and just being with people. We hope that Miss Stacy will continue to serve our school for many years to come, and in closing, We offer our sincere thanks, and Wish her much happiness and continued success. ua, ' The school was indeed shocked by the unexpected death of Eva May Riach, the heart of our office. Over a period of her seventeen years of service, Eva May became a tradition, a vital part of the school machinery. Eva May, efficient, and devoted to the best interest of the Clyde Schools, has made for herself a place in our hearts and memories. Only now are We beginning to fully comprehend the significance of this great loss to our school. An M 'r R N AND FACULTY SUPERINTENDENT We, the class of '53, extend our thanks to our superintendent, Mr. Virgil Briegel, for the fine Work he has been doing in our commun- ity's behalf. We are very fortunate to have had his expert supervision and guidance, things which are very essential to the smooth Working of any school program. We Wish you much success in the future, and hope to have your leadership in our school for many more years. IL BRIEG BUARD 0F EDUCATION W Ben Davis Richard Robbins Carlton Schwan Rush Richmond President Not in Picture Dr. William Cozad Ted Rogers Clerk Thanks to our Board of Education for the constant attention being given to the development of our school system. Their foresight and Wise planning is clearly reflected both in our new facilities now being erected, and in the curriculum which is being expanded and modified to meet the needs of today- the challenge of tomorrow. BERNARD F. HUNT PRINCIPAL If you ever happen to pass a door marked Principal, between 8:30 A.M. and 3:30 P.M., chances are very rare that you'l1 find that door closed, or the room beyond, empty. And if you ever need some good advice or help, Mr. Hunt will give you the best, and willingly too. He always seems to find time for everyone and everything. That is a very difficult task in this world of speed today. A lot of credit for making Clyde High School what it is today goes to Mr. Hunt, a true friend of all. g Q4 Ianice Maule Not in Photo . 11 K a,,,, MAINTENANCE Willard Bowersox Engineer Harold Robinson Custodian Louis Evy Custodian Gale Strouse Custodian 0 F FI G E N E L P Mrs. Rush Richmond u EMMA ,EA V E f ,f Q .xt F A 0 U L T Y NORMAN BRAUTIGAM Industrial Arts 9-12, Mechanical Draw- ing, Basketball Coach, Varsity C, Base- ball Coach, Football Line Coach. T reasurer THE GLASS HISTURY We Seniors, who were enlisted the year of 1941 for 12 years of training in Clyde High School, have completed our basic training. Before we go, we would like to leave with you a History of our unit that tells of the happy times we had together. ln our first year of training we put on a play called The Three Bears . The stars of this wonderful play were Iim Mitchell as Papa Bear, Iudy Hughes as Mama Bear, Kit Shanahan as Baby Bear and Rena Prouty as Goldilocks. The rest of the unit formed a chorus in the background. Then there was that beau- tiful band called The Toy Band , led by that wonderful leader, Miss Shirley Tressler. Our second year of training was a quiet year. This came about because of the big paddle Miss Bertha manipulated, if we were not quiet she would come along and whack us. During the third year a new recruit entered our unit, Iames Ayers. Although lim was supposed to be a year behind us, he was so smart they put him in with us. ln the fourth year Kit Shanahan and Iohn Iackson argued about whether there was or was not a Santa Claus. Can't you just see our whole unit in tears when we found out there wasn't any Santa Claus! That year Mrs. Broud made us stay after school because we didn't learn our history. Tough Boy , LaMar Wott, cried all the time we were there. During the fifth year of training two more recruits entered our unit, Gaylene Jones and Bob Trudeau. Bob was quite a corker, he was the envy of every girl. 1 wonder how many girls Bob had that year? Love was blooming in the sixth year. lt seems that Mr. Biegel asked Glenn Ray what he was doing. Glenn said he was studying his spelling so Mr. Biegel asked him to spell Honey , Before spelling the word Glenn pronounced it and Shirley Tressler, whom it seems Glenn was squiring, said, YES? . During the seventh year Glenn Bay went in the Library and when Miss Reardon Know Mrs. Sarvisl came in, he crawled under a table. Miss Reardon knocked on the table and said 'Glenn Ray, you come out of there'. Glenn knocked on the table and said, 'Come in and get me'. The I-Teens had a formal dance during our Freshman year, for most of us it was our first formal dance. Oh, it was heavenly tripping over our long formals! 'TIIE GLASS HISTORY Then there was the Biology Party We had at the end of our Sophomore Year. Mr. Miller looked wonderful in his bathing suit. This was the year Pat Pearce entered our unit. Next came the busy Iunior Year, every one was Waiting for their Class Ring. Our play for the year was Magnificent Obsession . Came spring, and heavens to heavens, our Senior Prom, the theme, The Garden Gate Stands Cpen . The fad this year was white bucks. Last but not least comes our glorious Senior Year. This year the parties are flying hot and heavy. Our motto is Let's have a party f At the beginning oi the year the tad was bleached hair. As you can see we have had a marvelous time and are sorry to leave. But we must take off, so We will say good-by and good luck to all. nEPAnTunE We who leave you Bear our burden well You have taught us what things Have value and what things Deserve an everlasting shrine in our memories. Let us come at some distant time to visit you, But never shall we ever be allowed to be a part of you again. -R.l.W. VVS-77 CL A5 SE S GLASS UFFIDERS IUNIORS Barbara Buck .......... I -W I ACTIVITIES al My staff and I are happy to present to you, 'the students, faculty, administration, and friends of the Clyde Schools, the fifth edition of the Courier. I am quite proud of our Courier, and am even more proud of my staff, Without Whose efforts this book could not have been produced. Therefore I Want to take this opportunity to give credit Where credit is due. Mr. Koester, Barbara Buck, Iames Avers BUSINESS EDITORS: Iudy Hughes and Kathryn Myers Upon Iudy rested the burdens of the Yearbook subscription campaign and the Magazine drives. On top of this, she did much of the typing for the yearbook, and all of my correspondence typing. For the second year Kathryn handled most capably the longest and most mo- notonous job I had to offer-the ice cream stand. This job means Work five days each and every week of school. She also served as Class Historian. Both of these girls spent many hours do- ing work which, not even remotely, could be related to their responsibilities as Busi- ness Editors. YEARBUUK STAFF 1953 SENIOR EDITOR: Icrmes Avers Again this year I was lucky to obtain a person of outstanding ability to head my staff. It is impossible for me to give you in these few lines, even a summaryvof his duties. I can only say that I received that type of service and assistance that We have all been receiving from the Avers family for rnany years. I am sure that no further explanation is necessary. IUNIOR EDITOR: Barbara Buck With an eye toward the future, I chose Barbara for this position. I have not been disappointed in this choice. She possesses those qualities which are sonecessary for one Who assumes the responsibilities of an Editor, namely, ability to plan, and Will- ingness to Work. Iudy Hughes, Kathryn Myers YEARBDDK STAFF CLASS EDITOR: Nancy Friedley Nancy's job was to supply all informa- tion, including proper identification of all students ot the Clyde Schools whose pic- tures appear in this book. With approxi- mately llOU students involved, one can easily realize that this was not a one day task. ORGANIZATION EDITOR: Shirley Tressler This was Shirley's second year as Or- ganization Editor. She completed her job in record time, and then devoted her time to helping those people who were in need of some dependable assistance. Dolly Hendricks, Iim Humberger PHOTOGRAPHERS: Carol Finkler. Virginia Limbert. and Barry Brown The job ot obtaining good informal pic- tures is not an easy assignment. l feel that we are obtaining as good results as can be expected under present circum- stances. The yearbook is very much in need ot some good photographic equip- ment. These people deserve thanks for using their personal equipment to do this iob for our school. Paul Koester Yearbook Advisor Nancy Friedley, Shirley Tressler SPORT EDITORS: Dolly Hendricks and lim Hrunberqer One reason for the increased size of the Yearbook this year is the expanded Sport Section. I am sure that you will agree that the Sport Section is one of the high lights of this book. Here is a splendid example of success through teamwork. I hope for even more detailed sport coverage in the future. At Elmore COACH'S COMMENTS The football season of 1952 afforded many happy moments and a few sad ones. The season's record stood at 6 wins and 3 losses, those losses being by a few points. Clyde was represented on the S. B. C. all conference team, with Iirn Mitchell at end on the first team, Robert Metzgar, back, on the second team and Walt Dayringer, tackle, and Ronnie House, guard, third team and Robert Wilson, tackle, honorable mention. The thirteen graduating seniors will leave many positions open to be filled by undergraduates. We wish good luck in future years to those boys who played on the gridiron for Clyde High School and we will always keep a spot in our hearts for them. -Robert Miller SENIUR PRUFILES of '53, I'S e, the Senio 3 N 2 0315 .-Qg-E. E lmore COACH'S COMMENTS ' The 1952-53 season proved to be highly successful for all the basketball squads. Our varsity team recorded the best record for a Clyde varsity squad in ll years. .At times the team looked as good as any class B team in the area, .displaying fine passing, shooting and teamwork. We had the misfortune of having a bad night when the chips were down in the protest tourney, but even in defeat the boys proved to be true sportsmen. This year was the last for lim Mitchell, a boy who no doubt can be ranked as the finest basketball player Clyde has produced. He was named lst team conference, lst team tourney, lst team Toledo Blade, and lst team News Messenger for both his junior and senior years. We also lose Iim Sargeant, Glenn Ray, Floyd Thornton, and Iohn Iackson through graduation. We wish these 'boys the best of luck. As I look back over a successful season, l must also look into the future. I will have two returning lettermen, Robert Gray and Robert Michaels, boys who did a good job this year and expect to do a better job next season. I will also receive from the reserve squad a group of boys who compiled an excellent ll-2 record, the first winning reserve squad in a number of years to advance to the varsity. We ,expect you boys to give Clyde some fine basketball in the years to come. The Iunior high squad developed into a good playing aggregation and we look for some good basketball players to emerge from this group after receiving more experience. -Norman Brautigam RESERVE SQUAD ui .M O -z CD O CD F-1 D-4 2 o p-J 'ci Don ,Tc:ylor, Ierry Woo Streeter, Bill Taylor, Tom .-e 3 O as B ,Q CD O D -cs F-I O m 5' Fd O E- f-'I E DT Ui CD Q O P N CD O ct CD , . Bob Berie, the only Senior in the regular lineup, was the tearn's leading hitter. Sophomore, Bob Gray, did a fine job of hurling and should develop into a good pitcher for Clyde High. With more experience these boys should give us some fine baseball in the next two years. -Norman Brautigam 1952 TRACK SQUAD E o ze 'ci U O F-1 cn EQ ,Q 65' P+- GJ EE Aa: o nie Taylor, O no 'O 6-4 U .-Cf Farrar, Ric se, Don 3 32 Q Q.:- O D son rkhardt, S Bu C CD D CD 4... State Meet At Columbus COACH'S COMMENTS The Pliers completed their 1952 season undefeated until the final meet of the year-state meeting final in Columbus. A The unparalleled all around strength of the Pliers was felt by their opponents as the Blue and Gold team Won by great margins over Upper Sandusky, Wil- lard, and Gibsonburg in dual meets, and then for the second consecutive year Won the Clyde Relays, Sandusky Bay Conference Meet, and the District Meet. Only a severe injury to Bob Pox, Clyde's all Ohiottrack performer, kept the Pliers from a possible State Championship. The 1953 team should have enough depth to continue the efforts of the 1952 squad. The Pliers will continue to have power in the dashes, hurdles, and relays. The distance runs are coming in for a lot of attention and should the Pliers improve in this department, they will continue their winning ways-having Won 44 of their last 48 dual and triangular meets. Lettermen that are eligible to participate during the 1953 season are Iames Avers, lerry Keegan, LaVerde Kuns, lim Mitchell, Iohn Schwan, lames Sar- geant, Barry Brown, Ployd Thornton, Larry Whittaker, LaMar Baker, Ronald Brutcher, Ronald House, Glenn Ray, Ronald Baker, Dean Ernsberger, lohn Piser, Dave Gillette, Ronald Golembiowski, Ronald Dick, Roger Kuns, Robert Metzgar, and Bradley Maines. There are several Sophomores who have great possibilities and will make the lettermen Work for their positions. -A. W.
