We can never put a physical value on all that they have done for us, and we shall never be able to thank our parents enough for all they have given us. Through their unselfishness and love for us they have helped us reach the turning point in our lives -- graduation. DEDICATION i We, the Seniors of the class of 1956, do respectfully dedicate The Green Knight to Miss Beulah Phipps, Mr. N.B. French, and Mr. John M. Caywood. We will al- ways remember their interest in the stu- dents and in this school. We feel that our lives have been enriched by knowing these people. r £ I W Jim was a boy who always had a smile and a kind word for everyone. He seemed satisfied with our com- munity and our school when the family moved here in 1954. He quickly made friends and adjusted himself to the unfamiliar surroundings. Jim took part in his junior cLas s activities and class discussions. And to quote one of his classmates, Jim took more than his share of the load . We feel that Jim ' s passing is a great loss to both our school and our community. This brave boy, who in his sixteen years had experienced more pain than many of us will ever have, will be remembered for nis courage to carry on. His friendly smile and kindness is missed by all of us. THE SENIOR CLASS OF 1955-1956 UJ1IUI1 ymiiiiiiiiii Class Officers: Nancy Smith Reporter Harry Elswick . . . DISTRICT EIGHT CO-CHAMPS Coach-Ralph Cummins The 1955 Green Wave completed the most im- pressive record in Clintwood history. Never before has a team captured the hearts of the fans as this team did. Picked by the experts to finish no higher than 7th place in the District, they finished the sea- son undefeated, and tied for District Championship. Their victories were over POUND, 21 TO 0; NORTON, 21 TO 0; BIG STONE GAP, 46 TO 0; COEBURN, 13 TO 7; JONESVILLE, 33 TO 6; ER- VINTON, 39 TO 6; ST. CHARLES, 21 TO 0; and GRUNDY, 19 TO 6. An otherwise perfect season was mar red by two ties. The first, with Appalachia, Assistant Coach-Howard Deel came in a downpour of rain and a field of mud a foot deep, and it finally ended in a 6-6 tie. This game was later forfeited to Clintwood. The second was with Wise which ended in a 0- 0 tie . A clear cut champion- ship was missed by inches in the Clintwood- Wise championship game, played before a sell-out crowd at Clintwood. The game ended with Clintwood in control of the ball in the Wise 6 inch line. With an average weight of 159 pounds, the Green Wave out-fought every team they played, giving Clintwood High School its first football champion- ship. Vanover, C. Fleming, Coach Ralph Cummins. DISTRICT EIGHT BASKETBALL CHAMPIONS Clintwood ' s Green W ave appeared in the District Eight finals for the seventh con- secutive season, and this year is the fourth year they have won the District Title. Coach Deel ' s team won the State Group II title in 1 949 and 1 950. In 1952 the Green Wave lost to Marion in the state finals, and in 1956 they lost to Graham in the state semi-finals. Clintwood High School also won its third consecutive basketball sportsmanship trophy this year. The school won the dis- trict sportsmanship trophy in 1955 and 1956 and the state in 1956.
