SENIOR CLASS HISTORY The Class of 1959 began its freshman year at C.S.V. T.S. (as it was then) with 76 eager students. Everything was new and exciting to us. Our class officers were: President. Rex Simmons; Vice-President, Johnny Burgess; Secretary, Betty McEntire; and Treasurer, James Ruble. Class sponsors that year were Mr. Horton and Mr. Jones. The class glowed with pride when one of our members, Betty McEntire, was chosen Homecoming Queen. This was the first time in the history of the school that a freshman had received this honor. Sandra Pate was a Homecoming Maid, and Sally Long represented the class in the school Fair Queen Contest. Among the activities of the class that year was a sock party which we sponsored. On our class trip we journeyed to Petit Jean Mountain; in route home we stopped to skate at Black- well Skating Rink near Morrilton. As we began our sophomore year, our class had dwindled to 59 students. Class officers were: Presi- dent, Johnny Burgess; Vice-President, Carroll Campbell; Secretary, Shirley Roten; Treasurer, John Miller; and Reporter, Larry Roth. Mrs. Pate and Mr. Griffith were chosen as class sponsors. One highlight of our activities was a Hobo Party, and we sponsored several things to raise money. Several members of our class received honors during the year and we were well represented in all phases of school life. The annual class trip was taken to Lake Nixon where we spent our time swimming, boat riding, and dancing. We included skating in our trip by stopping at Buddy's Roller Rink in Conway on the way home. As juniors the number of students in our class was 50. Class officers for that year were: President, Rex Simmons; Vice-President, Carroll Campbell; Secretary, Sally Long; and Treasurer, Sandra Pate. Student Council representatives were: Johnny Burgess, Joe Kidd, and Sandra Pate. Class sponsors were Mrs. Pate and Mr. Perkins. After a very exciting race, our candidate, Sally Long, won the Fair Queen Contest and represented the school in The Miss Van Buren County Contest. As is the custom each year, our class sponsored the Junior-Senior Banquet. The theme was Oriental Gardens. Car-washing and the sale of license plates bearing the school mascot, a yellowjacket, were among our activities for making money. We took our class trip to Conway, where skating and watching a double-feature movie were our primary activities. As we began the last but most important year, there were 46 class members remaining. Chosen as our officers were: President, Johnny Burgess; Vice-President, Phillip Harper; Secretary, Sandra Pate; and Reporter, Jimmy Crownover. Bobbye Jolly represented our class as fair queen. The senior play was Hillbilly Courtship. The class motto, Forward Ever-Backward Never, and the colors, blue and white, were selected early in our senior year. Also a red rose was designated as our class flower. We left on our senior class trip April 25. We spent our nights at Biloxi, Mississippi; Pensacola, Florida; and New Orleans, Louisiana. Swimming and touring some historical spots highlighted our trip. Everyone had a wonderful time, but all good things must come to an end, and we arrived at home on April 29. The Baccalaureate Service was held May 10, at 2:30 p.m. with Reverend W. P. Connell as speaker. On May 11 at Commencement we received our diplomas. We will always cherish the memories and wonderful experiences that we have had during the four years we spent at Clinton High School. Pag© 26
