Text from Pages 1 - 80 of the 1956 volume:

19 5 6 Mrs. Helen Johnson Miss Glenn Morgon Nineteen hundred fifty-six marks a momentous milestone in the history of Clinton High School. This milestone is the retirement of two people whose very names are almost synonymous with our high school. Their former pupils are legion as are their friends. For many years the word Latin and Mrs. Johnson were inseparable, as were the words Math and Miss Morgan. The faculty and the student body join in a proud salute to them and wish them many happy years as a reward for a job well and faithfully done. Page 4 WILLIAM W. As we look back through the years, we see that they are filled with memor- ies that shall never fade. Sometimes we were a sad bunch, but much more often our years were filled with happiness. Our first year, as green and gangly freshmen, we encountered an altogether new life in high school. As the first report cards were issued, and as each teacher placed a grade (which was not always the top) on the card, we realized that this was not all play after all. We envied the aloof Seniors, everything seemed so easy for them. They never had to study and always seemed to have a minimum of books, if any. As our second year came upon us, we felt that we were much wiser and we were really begin- ning to know our way around. But of course, to the Seniors we were still those silly Sophomores. We got in the spotlight for awhile though, when we received our class rings. They were the most beautiful things we had ever possessed. But we were anxiously awaiting our Junior year and then, all of a sudden, there it was! Our Junior year was full of activity. We went scurrying from one event to another at break- neck speed. We joined the Seniors to produce two one-act plays which were well received and en- joyed by all who attended them. A magazine sale was launched and we canvassed Clinton and nearby towns in an effort to make our quota. The prom consisted of work, anticipation, and plea- sure as the guests arrived and enjoyed the decorations and entertainment. The Seniors were leav- ing, and through our tears came the thought that next year we would be Seniors. The great day had arrived. We were, after four long years, Seniors! We joined the Junior class to present a three-act play, a comedy, through which underclassmen and adults had many a mirth-filled moment. We took scholarship exams and a number of us received scholarships to the schools of our choice. We also were interviewed by the Indiana Placement Bureau and some of us took aptitude tests (trying to prove that we were good for something!) It seemed as though the year had just begun, but the picnic, baccalaureate, and graduation were upon us. As we passed onto the stage to receive our diplomas, we felt a tug at our hearts and each of us felt sad that these four wonderful years were at an end. None of us will ever forget these years. And we shall al- ways remember our classmates, teachers, and most of all Clinton High School. Page 10 Compliments of: T. V. CENTER, R. C. A. Everyone turned out for the parade and games and had an all-around good time at Aragon Park to make this Columbus Day one which will be remembered in Clinton for a long time. At the annual Homecoming Dance, attended by many C. H. S. graduates, Queen Judy was crowned by Gerry Dick and led the Grand March to the music of Raphael Fleming's Band. Compliments of: and: JOE GIACOLETTO MOBILGAS STATION GAMBY'S STORE Page 39 Clinton again went basketball crazy when we entered the County tourneys this year. We began the tourneys with an easy victory over St. Bernice. The Cats, happy over their first victory, rolled over Perrysville and went on to defeat Dana to become the 1956 County Champs. Another trophy was presented to our team by the Vermillion County Basketball Championship to add to our increasing collection. With plenty of fire we entered the Quarter finals of the valley held at Clinton and again we came out on top over Attica and Chrisman. We went to our last game in Terre Haute with Gerstmeyer Tech. Our team showed plenty of spunk and fight, but the Black Cats were playing record ball and we came through second best. Our team had a highly successful year and is to be commended for their fine teamwork and spirit. Laurie Huntington, a psychology student at State University, comes home to find her family in a battle with their arch rivals, the Woods, over possession of a new car agency and the building in which to house it. Laurie, after meeting handsome Mark Bradford, gives the family a shock by psychoanalyzing a group of prominent women which her mother has invited to tea. After a fight with a paint brush, an exchange of angry words and a plot to bring the families together by Joan Wood and Wally, the play ends with everyone friendly. A partnership has been formed by Ted and Sidney to run the car agency, and Laurie is happily contented to give up psy- chology and become Mrs. Mark Bradford. Cornelia is opening in a new play and is perfectly calm, for a while. Then, much to her dismay, her husband, Alden, encounters some, oyster stew, becomes deathly ill and Cornelia is obligated to run after bicarb for him. Buz- zie Patterson, from Connecticut, then enters the scene and is so worried about herself that she ig- nores Cornelia. A group of schoolgirls, two old class mates that Cornelia doesn't remember, a nervous maid and two overly sweet friends further complicate the picture. Cornelia, completely ignored by all her friends, slips away from the apartment to the theater to her Opening Night. Nick Sherlock is summoned to Mouldy Manor by a phone call from lovely Jennifer, who is held prisoner by Dr. Carver. Carver is one of five members of the old Wedge- wood family who inhabit Mouldy Manor and indulge in murder as a matter of course. The moti- vating factor is, of course, the Rajahpoot ruby. A giant spider, Aranya, whose bite is fatal, almost reaches Jennifer and Nick, the detective, barely escapes death by surgery. Death at Mouldy Manor is indicated in advance by a toppling vase from a shelf. This play was a real thriller and kept all in suspense and stitches while watching the mystery. The theme was Storybook Ball, depicted by various drawings of storybook characters sur- rounding the dance floor. The entrance was Mother Hubbard's Shoe, through which passed all guests. The crowning of the queen JoAnn Marietta and her court: Marilyn Hammerick, Marianne Putz, Roseangela Massa and Loretta Graham were presented in true storybook fashion. The stage was set as a huge storybook and out of the pages stepped the queen and her court.
