I A U15 1959 y6'tIl'6UI7k of 6HlfIfl7lfl High Sclzzwl Gliuizw, Massachusetts THIS VOLUME OF MEMORABILIA IS DEDICATED TO A MAN WHO FOR THREE YEARS HAS SKILLFULLY AND UNSELFISHLY CONTRIBUTED MUCH TIME AND EFFORT TO THE BETTERMENT OF OUR CLASS. FOR THOSE TIMES WHICH WERE GOOD WE THANK HIM, FOR THOSE WHICH WERE BAD WE APOLOGIZE TO HIM, FOR WE ARE SURE THAT HIS SPIRITUAL AND FINANCIAL ADVICE HAS BETTER PREPARED US TO FACE OUR FUTURE. IT IS WITH THESE SENTIMENTS THAT WE, THE CLASS OF 1959, RESPECTFULLY DEDICATE THIS BOOK TO OUR CLASS ADVISOR, MR. JOSEPH P. BURGWINKLE. ecfzzomzz Umm. x 5. wiv-52? llll CBlIlIl1CIDlF'llillUIll ACKNOWLEDGMENT of faithful service in the teaching profession always comes too late The only apparent comparison is derived from the fact that a teacher works with youth in a restless pursuit of knowledge. There is, however, always one teacher who, by his dedication, makes teaching a worthy profession. It is with great respect and humility that the Class of 1959 pays homage to the memory of Raymond E. Dyer, who in his teaching career, spanning some thirty-five years, served the best interests of this high school and our community. Indeed, when one considers his contributions to community projects, then we have to double the role and value of the man as well as the teacher. Somehow it is hard to distinguish between the quality of the man and the quality of the teacher. One can see in both these qualities, the good man of the home, the disciplinarian, the genius of being helpful and considerate, the never shirking ideal of saying no to the unqualified, the citizen with the community's best interest at heart, the teacher with strength and breadth of vision, the man with the tremendous capacity for work, the idealist who made things work, and the practical man all united in the corporate form of Raymond E. Dyer, and makes us realize, even in the Atomic Age, the importance of a good man and a good teacher in a most complex society. In the words of the poet, he symbolizes That man is great, and he alone, Who serves a greatness not his own, For neither praise no pelf: Content to know and be unknown: Whole in himself. ymondl Dy Glfmznzsfmfz M JOHN J. Where do the teachers get that stuff? As graduation day draws nearer, we look back upon those first won- derful days at C. H. S., in September 1955, when we entered as nervous and bewildered Freshmen. After weathering the storm of in- evitable ieers and teasing of the upperclassmen, the feeling of nerv- ousness wore off, we ioined the crowd at Guidi's and gained more confidence in ourselves. We held our first class election under the supervision of Mr. Patrick Hastings, our newly-appointed ad- visor. To lead our class that first year we chose the following: Peter Rego- nini, President, Dorothy Pupecki, Vice- President, Michael Duffy, Treasurer, and Betty Ann Notaro, Secretary. As time wore on, we heard rumors of the terrifying Mid-Years and diligently studied for them. When the results were out, the Class of '59 had passed with flying colors. We had been initiated and accepted. June approached quickly and we eagerly anticipated the long summer vacation, and looked forward to the day when we would become Sopho- mores. SOPHOMORE YEAR As Sophomores we are wiser now, We tell the naive Freshmen how To find their fumbling way about, We're more mature without a doubt Once again we returned to Clinton High, as confident Sophomores and met our new advisor, Mr. Joseph Burgwinkle, who capably conducted our second class election. ln Septem- ber 1956, Joe Ryan was chosen Class President and Dorothy Pupecki, Vice-President, Eleanor Joyce, Secre- tary, and Michael Burdell, Treasurer. We soon became a part of the social whirl at C.H.S., with many of our classmates ioining the various athletic teams and still others taking part of the Thanksgiving Show and Inter-class Dramatics. Dues were collected regularly and our Class Treasury firmly established. Mid- Years held no terror for us now and once again we conquered them. Another year had passed and the long, carefree days of summer lay ahead. With enthusiasm, we looked toward the future when, as Juniors, we would return once more. JUNIOR YEAR We re upperclassmen now, you see, On the Honor Society, naturally! We threw a party for the slightest reason, Our Prom was the highlight of the season. At last we were upperclassmen and, as eager, excited Juniors, we returned to the now-familiar classrooms. Much wiser to the ways of C. H. S. and its maze of corridors, we happily looked forward to our Junior year and, on Election day, chose Michael Duffy, President, Dorothy Pupecki, Vice- President, Betty Ann Notaro, Secre- tary, and Michael Burdell, Treasurer. ln February 1958, we lost the main part of Clinton High which had been both a source of constant amazement and good times for us. The fire that destroyed it played an important part in our High School careers, as we were obliged to walk from building to building for classes and were sub- ject to the whim and fancy of Old Man Weather. Our Junior Prom was a wonderful affair and the beautiful Oriental theme was a picture of enchantment to all who observed it. With Say- onara as a theme and Frankie Dee's orchestra supplying the music, it was truly a wonderful and memorable evening for the Class of '59. We dutifully paid our dues and watched our Treasury grow. Another fun-filled year had quickly passed and 1959 was not far away. SENIOR YEAR We're ready now to face the world The banner '59 unfurled. The singing in the early May, Rings the warning Graduation Day The peak of success! The worthy and honored title of Senior! We were on top and happier and more excited than ever. Early in the year we held elections and placed our confidence in the following officers: Michael Vice-President, Barbara McNamara, Secretary, and Michael Burdell, Treas- urer. We finished paying our clues and, after the successful sale of Christmas Cards, we planned our Senior Hop. The Mardi Gras theme was colorful and exciting, with couples dancing to the wonderful music of Dick Williams, and the gay scene was well remem- bered by all. The days passed all too quickly, as we planned and worked on our Year- book, and awaited the class banquet and trip. Marks were better than ever and every school day was filled with fun. Spring was upon us and with it came excitment, ioy and sadness as the long awaited day of Graduation drew closer. We realized that we were leaving Clinton High School forever, but carrying with us a host of cherished memories of a wonderful class. Michael T. Duffy Patricia A. O'Connell Michael J. Throughout her four years Loretta has managed to keep her marks at an average level and still contribute her share to all the gaiety of social activities. A great deal of her time is spent working as a nurse's aide at the Clinton Hospital in preparation for her future career, which is to be a Lady in White. Everything about Nancy, her manner, her personality and her smile, is decidedly friendly. Her chief pleasure while at C. H. S. was serving as co-captain of the cheer- leaders. However, Nancy also lent her manifold talents to the Thanksgiving Night Shows and to the Octopus. Her willingness to help in all school functions made her a valuable member of our class. That's where all the fruit is. Good-looking, with a ruddy complexion and blond hair, describes Bill. This fellow, whose voice can be heard ringing through the halls of C. H. S., is another senior who was bestowed with the proverbial gift of gab. His readiness for a good time and his wonderful sense of humor have made him popular with all his classmates. Bill never misses a school function or a local dance, and is always there to lend a helping hand. Although books don't seem to bother him, he has always managed to keep on the right side of the fence. Bill's future plans are undecided. We know, however, he will be a success in whatever field he chooses. Best of luck in the future, Bill, from the Class of '59. Octopus Staff, Tau Sigma, History Circle, Junior Prom Committee. He's the boy with the overwhelming smile and the keen mind, capable of comprehending the most intricate details. He has earned one of the most coveted honors at Clinton High, The Harvard Book Award. But there is more than brains in this handsome lad. Among other things there are friendliness and manners, consideration toward every one of his classmates. His dark, striking crew-cut and big brawny frame have made many of the females at C. H. S. take notice of this all-round man. Tune of For All We Know We laughed and played as the years went slipping by, And now the time has come to say goodbye. Though our fond farewells may echo forever, We know in our hearts that we can't return ever. And when we've gone and we cross the timeless seas, Our school stays on and will haunt our reveries. So when teardrops start we won't be afraid of them, This evening was made for them, So let them flow. For all we know we may never meet again, And though we know that tonight must mean an end We'll travel the ways in different directions, But remember these years in loving affection. We'll think of Proms and of parties, and the games, And each new year brings a memory of old names We're wishing tonight tomorrow would never come, Though it may mean less to some, We hate to go, For we may never meet again for all we know. Frank Prior One of the most eagerly anticipated events of our high school career took place June 6, 1958. Our Junior Prom was the most exquisitely decor- ated in many a year. The transformation of the Town Hall into a colorful and beautiful authenti- cally Japanese scene will long be remembered by the many couples who danced beneath the twinkling colored lights of the crystal ball. The theme, Sayonara, was dominated by a colorful, eye-catching Pagoda fashioned in typical Japan- ese style and enhanced by lighted Japanese lanterns, branches of cherry blossoms, and a bubbling fountain. The entrance was set off by potted ferns and the tables surrounding the hall were set apart from the dance floor by a garden wall covered with climbing vines. The entertainment for the evening was pro- vided by Dick Williams' orchestra. At lO:3O the grand march was held under the capable direction of Mr. Joseph P. Burgwinkle, our class advisor. At the conclusion of the grand march, the announcement of the queen and her court held the rapt attention of the many specta- tors. Mary P. Gibbons, '59, was selected Queen and her court consisted of Barbara Hamilton '59, Barbara McNamara '59, Ann Mill '60, Janice Nicoletti '58, Elizabeth Notaro '59, and Arlene Rockwell '59. As the last strains of the haunting music faded away, we were aware of an indescribable feeling of happiness and contentment, knowing that this spectacular Prom was a fitting climax to a very wonderful and prosperous Junior year. On February 6, 1959, in the Fallon Memorial Auditorium, the Class of T959 held their last formal. The hall had been trans- formed into a captivating scene of a Mardi Gras, with colorful lanterns and dragon tails. A beautiful array of streamers, dominated by an enormous Top Hat, which showered balloons, confetti and streamers upon the dancers was one of the most captivating attractions. Music for the evening was provided by the Dick Williams' Orchestra. The highlight of the evening was the selection of Elizabeth Notaro as Queen of the Senior Hop. Her court was composed of Trudy Halloran, Eileen Jakubowicz Sheila Keblin, Patricia O'Connell, Dorothy Pupecki, and Arlene Rockwell. Over two hundred couples attended and we were humbly grateful with the many expressions of delight for another never-to-be- forgotten Senior Hop of Clinton High School. Cfvlfl 62811 U 'l I C! Our play was entitled, The Stuffed Shirt, and was capably presented by a veteran cast. The play revolved around the efforts of a young man to represent himself as a big shot, only to be exposed, but accepted by his girl because of his sincere desire to succeed. lt was a rather disappointed group who were to receive the news that the Juniors had upset them. However, we were quick to acknowledge the excellence of their performance and wish them continued success. This was the story of a harassed father who tried to bring a scatterbrained wife and her offspring to a realization of the value of money, only to fall prey to their extravagance in the end. Even though our play was well received, we were unable to unseat the mighty Seniors and once again we had to settle for second place. How- ever, we derived some measure of comfort from the fact that Sheila O'Day was acclaimed Best Actress of the Year. Sophomore Play First Row, left to right: Terrence Tor, Barbara McNamara, Carol Coccione, Walter Dunn, Second Row, left to right: Mary Rutkowski, Bonnie Morclli, James Hoplrins, George Makosiei, Elizabeth Ellam, Earlene Rockwood. On December 26, 1956, our Sophomore cast appeared on stage in the riotous comedy, Deferential Kindness. This comedy, about a beautiful girl and the machinations of her younger brother who was constantly inter- fering in her social affairs, and who did, in fact, manage to turn the tables on her, afTorded the large audience a most enjoyable evening, Our per- formance was acclaimed by all the critics. Sheila O'Day One of the highlights of our Freshman year was the annual interclass dramatics competition, presented in the Town Hall, April l3, l956. Needless to say, it was a rather frightened young group of thespians who faced the bright lights that night. The title of our first presentation was, Paul Wrecks the Car, starring Billy Flannagan as Paul. lt was a very humorous account of the problems a young man faces when he wrecks the family car on his first date. While we didn't win any prizes, most critics agreed that we gave a creditable performance, considering our inexperience, and we confidently looked forward to next year. , a . 5 ' C K 5 . This year, the reins were handed to John Hester, a former University of Illinois standout. He was capably assisted by Line Coach Guy Barassi and Freshman Coach Jo- seph Lockwood. Dick Lozier triggered a backfield composed of Bob Silvester and Pete Regonini at the halves, with Co-Captain Mike Burdell at full- back. These boys were supported by a stalwart group of linemen which included: Terry Tor, at center, Brian Shaughnessy, Jack Joyce and Co-Captain Mickey Ryan, guards, Bernie Mc- Mahon, Dan McLaughlin and John Luszcz, tackles. Co-Captain Mike Duffy, Eddie Bonin and Mike McNally teamed up to protect the flanks. The season was not successful as far as wins and losses were concerned. The boys had only one win, over Hudson High, to show for their efforts. However, this was due in large meas- ure to a succession of iniuries which severely hampered the team, especially during the latter part of the season. With a little luck, the boys might easily have chalked-up a couple of other wins. Nevertheless, most observers felt that the coaches succeeded in establishing a new sys- tem, and provided the younger members of the cast with sufficient experience to make them the nucleus of a future winner. After an absence of more than twenty years, I track was resumed last year under Coach Bob Whelan. This year Coach Jack Hester is working with a fine group of hopefuls and has planned a list of informal meets with such schools as Lunen- burg, Notre Dame of Fitchburg, Athol, Marlboro, Webster, Milford lN.H.l, and the schools in the Central Massachusetts Conference. rack First Row, left to right: Paul Nichols, David Gavin, David Dunn, Paul Ciavola, Neil Fadgen. Gosselin BASKE The 1958 Gael basketball squad could boast of only one win, a 37-25 conquest of Maynard High. However, the boys were very seldom completely outclassed and, while they were frequently disappointed, they were, in most of their games, right down to the wire. Lack of experience and proper facilities tor practice were the reasons most often cited for the Gaels' dismal showing. With a new gym in the otting and the experience gained this year, the prospects look considerably brighter for the '60 squad. Captain Dick Lozier, a unanimous choice for Midland League All-Star honors, Mike Burdell, Mike Duffy, John Pianowski, Mickey Ryan and Frank Prior, were the Senior members ot the squad. These boys were ably supported by Co-Captains-elect Dave Ahearn and Mike McNally. Some other bright prospects for the future were Jim McLaughlin, Jack Joyce, Dom Pizza and Dick Rymsza. ... 4. l . As we go to press, the 'lGaels have copped three straight wins and are currently sharing the top rung of the Central Massachusetts Baseball Confer- ence with the formidable Northbridge Rams. The wins include an 8-2 conquest of Hudson, a 5-4 win over Auburn, and a come-from-behind 6-5 decision over Wachusett Regional. In succeeding weeks the boys will meet aforementioned Northbridge, Shrewsbury, and arch-rivals Marlboro, Maynard and Milford. For the remainder of the season Coach Gosselin will rotate a pitching staff composed of southpaw George Makosiei and righthanders Ed Bonin and Joe Dintino. In the outfield, Mike Duffy, Jackie DeCesare and Co-Captain Dick Lozier make up a hard-hitting trio, the reserve strength includes Dom Pizza, Joe Cislak and Mike Flaherty. Co-Captain Mike Burdell heads a smooth- functioning infield, which includes Bob Kulaga, Frank Prior and John Luszcz, with Pete Regonini and Tony O'Laughlin in reserve.
