It also gave you the ad- vantages of working hard, of co-operating with teachers, and of giv- ing of yourselves to the greatest extent possible. In the true Amer- ican tradition, it gave each one of you the real opportunity to make the most of your abilities and, further, to develop any latent talents hidden in your wonderful characters. It did it in such a tangible fashion that not one of you should find it possible to feel a pang of regret for any lost opportunities. In addition it gave you that primary PumPose, in a flood of experi- ences, which was plannedp-subtly and expertly--to prepare you for life. Over the years, our secondary school has provided this com- munity and nation a list of leaders which has added value to our eco- nomic and civic activities. In parting, this school, we should say, will not elaborate on the social, civic, and spiritual values you received here. Nor should this school touch on the multiplicity of momentous memories-inc1ud- ing the games, proms, banquets, dances, baccalaureates, assemblies, P.M.'s, class meetings, parents' nights, holidays, field trips, re- creations, recesses and renort cards--which are at one time, so much a part of the school activities and, at the same time a part of each sudent's personal history that somehow they cannot be separated. Suf- fice it to say that all these contributed to your growth. In the end, however, it is the job of each graduating class to raise its own level of achievement so that the society in which we live is better because of its contribution. Within each one of you lies a lofty purpose. Fulfill that purpose. Keep high the ideals you have learned here. Go out and be ready to contribute to that list of leaders which represent our school. The time was Sep- tember, 1956, but, as we eventually saw, the grid picture loomed on the dark side this year as excessive injuries hampered the Gael squad throughout the season. A 40-man team, comprised mostly of last year's veterans, had their roster decreased to fewer than 20 by the time the season's end rolled around. Such was the fate of Coach Martin L. Gibbons, who, assisted by Coach Pat Litteris, piloted Clinton High footballers for the third straight year. Co-captain Dave Bailey and Bob Gibbons both did a creditable job flashing signals for the Green and Gold, and they were strongly supported by a troupe of blustery Gael challengers. These included Jack Philbin, Richie Andre and Co-captain Kev Kerrigan, guards, Paul McLaughlin, Chet Burzenski and Walt McGrail, tacklesg Ronnie Balboni, Ed Verrier and Pat O'Toole, ends, Gerry Joyce, center, Earl Fadgen, Billy Moran and Guy LeBrack fill- ing inthe backfield posts. Gerry LaPenna, Bob Graham and Mike Duffy were also given a turn with the pigskin, subbing for injured Gaels. On September 22, the Gallopin' Gaels embarked on their 9-game sched- ule with a rousing 12-7 victory over St. Peter's. After this sparkling debut, fate stepped in and cast a bitter end to Green and Gold glory. The team experienced defeat in the remainder of their contests despite an unconquer- able will to battle against heavy odds. One thing is definite-the boys had courage. In Victory, as well as in de- feat, they attacked every obstacle with a NIL DESPERANDUM fnever say diej spirit. Such determination earned Co-captains Dave Bailey and Kevin Kerrigan a berth on the Midland All-Star'Team. Dave and Kev are to be complimented on their election to this select group. The Class of '57 wishes the best of luck to Mr. Robert Whelan, who re- cently was appointed to succeed Mr. Martin Gibbons as Clinton High grid coach. HAIL TO THE GAELS . . . . . Charlie Altman Winning his sixth title in eight years, Coach Ed Connor embellished his illustrious career at CHS by ushering the Gallopin' Gaels into the realm of the Midland League Championship once again. The Green and Gold warriors, moulded into a team of evenly-distributed talent, erupted with a 9-game winning streak in mid-season, during which time they stunned League contenders into submission with comparative ease. The Red and White forces from Milford nipped Clinton. 72-70 in the sea- son finale, thus inflicting on Clinton its sole loss in Midland contests. It was with the Milford five that the Gaels met their fiercest competition. The Clinton High quintet compiled an overall record of 12 wins and six losses with a League mark of nine and one. Coach Connor? boys were recognized for their hoop ability when they were chosen to participate in the Clark University Basketball Tournament. In the first game of the quarter-finals with Northbridge High, Blackstone Valley League Champions, the local lads, paced by Captain Patrick O'Toole, rallied late in the game to close a wide margin but the uphill battle fell short by seven points, time being the deciding factor. Although they were eliminated from Tourney play at Clark, the Connors- men were chosen to play in the Eleventh Annual Assumption Invitation Tournament at Assumption College. Information regarding these matches was unavailable at the time this copy went to press. However, it is antici- pated that the Gael hoopsters will enjoy the same success in this tournament as they did last year. In the final analysis, Coach Connor is to be congratulated for an out- standing s easo n and GOOD LUCK NEXT YEAR, COACH, WHEN YOU WILL BE 'FACED WITH THE UNENVIABLE TASK OF REORGANIZING YOUR ENTIRE SQUAD.
