After completing high school, Mr. Williams attended the University of Illinois. He then transferred to Utah State to get his B. A. degree and went on to get his master's degree at Southern Illinois University. He later went to Millikin for Drivers Education. Mr. Williams first teaching was at Carterville in 1957. In 1959 he moved to Gillespie, and in 1963 he went to McLeansboro. Mr. Williams began his teaching career at Clinton in 1964. He first taught Biology and Science and later switched to Driver's Education. He was also made head football coach of the fighting maroons and assistant basketball coach. If you weren't in the halls before 8:10; follow the footprints. If you read your English assignment before class, go on to the next picture. If you knew where you were going to be all your free mods, go ahead. If you made it through the halls without being run over during the rush, advance one. O O If you can find a clean table to eat on in the commons, advance ahead. If you always have a clean gym suit to wear, go ahead one. If you weren't ever kicked out of the library for talking, advance on one space. If you can beat the traffic jam as school gets out, you have won the game;: turn ca The events for the Homecoming 1973 began at three P.M. on October nineteenth. Led by a police escort, the parade began in front of the Middle School. With the blow of the drum majors whistle, the parade came to life. Following right behind the band were the colorful floats. A grand total of eight floats were displayed. Although all the floats were nicely done, only three of them received prizes. First place went to Pep Club, who's theme was Whale of a Victory. Second prize went to Girl's Athletic Association, who titled their entry as Alarm Canton, Time's Running Out. The final prize went to the Future Nurses of America Club, who titled their float Knock 'Em Spacey. Homecoming 1973 JuJ ueen Renee Piepenbrink Queen's Court Although the weather was chilly, the Maroon's spirit was not dampened. The event they had all been looking forward to began at eight P. M. on October nineteenth. The fighting Maroons did not let their fans down and took an early lead in the game. Starting out on the right foot, the Maroons were determined to win. They succeeded in holding the opponents, Canton, to eighty three years rushing, compared to the their two hundred eighty-eight yards. Special defensive award went to Jack Mills, who had twelve tackles. Special offensive awards went to Steve Smith, who chalked up one hundred four yeards rushing, and Greg Allen, who totaled one hundred seven yards. As the final buzzer went off, the victorous Maroons ran off the field with a 21-6 victory. This year’s Homecoming Dance was held in the High School commons on Saturday, October 20. The dance began promptly at eight p.m. and lasted till eleven p.m. The young couples enjoyed dancing to music played by the Stonewood. At 9:30, the 1973 Homecoming Queen, Miss Re Nae Piepenbrink, and her escort, Mr. Steve West, were featured in the traditional homecoming queen dance. G r a m e r c y Ghost The Drama Club, directed by Mr. Hal Simpson of Clinton Community High School, put on a play performance of Gramercy Ghost . The club performed on November 1, student night, and November 3, which was for the public. The cast got a loud applause for their performance in which they deserved. The play was about three men who were all in love with one girl. One of the three men was Nathaniel Coomes, a patriotic Ghost from the American Revolution. The part was played by David Johnson. Another of the men was Charlie Steward, a reporter played by Rodney Wilson. Last but not least was Nancy Willard's fiance who lived next door to her throughout their childhood. Nancy Willard was a young, beautiful, and successful working woman. The part of Nancy was played by Kathy Bundy and her fiance was played by Larry Roberts. Gramercy Ghost was a play well done by Mr. Simpson and the whole cast and crew. 15 The 1974 Sweetheart Dance was entitled Paper Roses. The dance was sponsored by the Future Homemakers and was held February 23. During an assembly February 21, the student body voted for their choice of sweethearts out of 29 girls. Freshman: Sandi Regal, Andrea Cook Vickie Smith, Tammy Thomas, Cindy Fink, Debbie Vinson, Vickie Shallenberger, Dena Sweet, Rhonda Huffman. Sophomore: Michelle McKnight, Nanette Adcock, Mary Glasson, Dona Shockey, Jan Turney. Juniors: Cindy Ayers, Dawn Schnabel, Llona Homback, Lori Mulkey, Kim Thomas. Seniors: Denise McMillan, Sandi Taylor, Susie O'Neil, Bev Tippet, Connie Gardener, FHA Sweethearts: Pam Dillow, Wanda Burris, Judy Williamson, Charlene Rusher. At 9:30 Saturday night during the dance, the attending couples, candidates, and public, gathered in the auditorium for the crowning. Crown bearer was Kevin Strain and flower girl was Amy Hall. Background music was played by Julie Seymour while Miss Roxanne Tarter announced the winning sweethearts. Sweetheart-Jan Turney Nanette Adcock, Mary Glasson, Jan Turney, Michelle McKnight, Donna Shockey. Spring Plays Mr. Hal Simpson, this year's play director and drama club sponsor, decided to get more people involved in the drama club by producing three One-Act plays. They did a comedy; The love Life of Herbert Parkenstacker, a melodrama; Switched at The Crossroads, and a drama; I Never Saw Another Butterfly. Mr. Simpson did an excellent job of directing these plays. All the students felt that having him as a director was an asset to the plays. 20 J 21 “Out in the The Junior-Senior Prom was given by the juniors for the seniors on May 10, 1974. The juniors titled the prom Out In The Country , and a committee of thirty-two helped construct the scenery. The Millikin Jazz Band, who are from Millikin University in Decatur, played for a total of sixty-three couples. The night began at 8:00 P.M. and lasted till 11:00 P.M. 22 Country ” H o n 0 r s D • 1 n n e r The Fifteenth Annual Honors Dinner was held in the commons area at 6:30 P.M. on Monday night, May 6, 1974. This years guests consisted of sixty-two honor students and their parents. The Invocation was given by Mr. James Monroe, a Science teacher at CCHS. The menu consisted of fruit nectar, braised steak, potatoes, green beans, tossed salad, rolls, and angel cake topped with strawberries. After completing the dinner, the guests moved to the auditorium for the program. First on the program was a piano selection by Miss Vangie Beals. Then Mrs. Karr, a Social Science teacher at CCHS, gave a short speech. The final part of the program was the recognition of the students by Mr. Glenn. This years sport banquet for wrestling and basketball was held at 6:30 P.M. on March 18, 1974 in the commons area. Those attending were the wrestling team, the basketball team, the wrestling stats, the basketball stats, the cheerleaders, the coaches, and last but not least the parents. First on the program was the invocation which was given by Rev. Winston Zastrow. The guests were served a hearty meal consisting of tomato juice, tossed salad, fried chicken, potatoes, green beans, rolls, and angel cake topped with strawberries. After completing the meal, the guests were entertained by a talk from Mr. Jerry Gray, head basketball coach from Millikin University. The last feature of the program was the awarding of the awards to both of the teams, and the stats and cheerleaders. On Monday, May 27, the annual Honor's Day Assembly was held in the morning. Jan Lewis Forty-six seniors enjoyed an exciting day at Six Flags on Tuesday, May 28. They left the high school at 6:00 A.M. and after getting lost in downtown St. Louis, they finally arrived at 10:15. Everyone enjoyed a great day and the bus departed at 6:00 P.M. and arrived back at the school at 10:30. 29 Graduation The Class of 1974 graduated from Clinton High School on May 31, 1974. There were a total of one hundred and forty-seven graduates. The ceremony began with the graduates marching into the gym while the band and Mrs. Karr played Pomp and Circumstance . Rev. Clark Tanner then gave the invocation and Jan Lewis followed with the Senior Student Welcome. Next Bill Stewart presented the Class President's Address. Guest were entertained as the band, directed by Terry Van, played Overature In B-Flat. , Stan Mulkey then followed with the Remarks from Student Council and the chorus was next as they sang We've Only Just Begun . Craig Glenn, principal of CCHS gave the message to the Class of 1974 and Dr. Thomas Larkin presented the diplomas to the seniors. The new graduates then sang Alma Mater and Rev. Winston Zastrow gave the Benediction. The program ended with the seniors exiting to the sound of Pomp and Circumstance. 30 Class of 1974 31 Fall Induction N a t I 0 n a I H o n o r National Honor Society is a group of selected members. The members hold meetings on the first and the third Wednesdays of every month. This years officers were: Ann Edmunds; president, Jan Lewis; Vice-president, Steve Nixon; secretary-treasurer, Kevin Kline; student council representative. The National Honor Society holds inductions twice a year, once in the fall and once in the spring. This year the club had two money-making projects. The first was the selling of buttons, which said The Big Marion Machine Is On The Move . Although the first project was not a complete success the second was very successful. Clara is from Bogota, Colombia in South America. She attended Santa Francisca Rom ana School in Bogota. Clara's courses at CHS included hospitality meals, P. E., English, French, photography, family living, and typing. Clara plans to attend college when she returns home. They have participated in many community parades and concerts, besides their fund raising activities for their new uniforms. With their new director, Mr. Van, the band started the year by performing at the home football game with the aid of the Pepperettes. Besides marching in Clinton's Christmas Parade, they were also invited to participate in Minier's Christmas Parade. Later they presented a preview of their annual spring and fall concerts. Together with community 36 Tamborine” donations, and the help of the Board of Education and the Band Boosters, the band also presented a Railroad Conceit to raise enough money to pay for their new uniforms. New this year to the concert program was an exchange concert with Edwardsville. First Edwardsville came to CCHS on May 2, to perform with the band. Then at a later date, the CCHS band made a bus trip to Edwardsville to perform in concert with them. Their first performance was presented to the high school students and faculty for Thanksgiving. At Christmas, the Chorus presented their annual concert. The band joined them in performing many Christmas carols. After the Christmas Concert, the group began working on their next concert, Valentine's Day. The band joined them in their Valentine's Party. The last program of the year was the Spring Concert. The group presented melodies of different themes and several solos were done. C., sponsored by Mrs. Kline, is a club composed of about 20 to 25 girls, who volunteer a minimum of ten hours of their time to working at the John Warner Hospital or the Hallsville Nursing Home. These girls learn some of the basic functions of a nurse. They become acquainted with the hospital schedule and learn much about nurse-patient relationships. F. N. C. plans at least one field trip per year, organized a Spring Banquet and plans a money making project. They take part in the Homecoming activities by sponsoring a float entry and this year they participated in the Spring Carnival. The club also sponsored a well-attended dance after the last home football game with music provided by The Music Scene. In addition, the club sold iron-on patches and some of last year's Christmas Candles. At the French Club Carnival, the club sponsored a water balloon toss, with a favorite target being, of course, Mr. Lehman. The club participates in many contests and workshops during the year. The FFA and its members generally place well in the contests they ehter. This year both, the Parliamentary Procedure and the Meat Judging teams, received good results; winning a plaque and blue ribbons respectively. Foundation Awards are awarded to individual members of the chapter who show outstanding qualifications in their specific areas of interest. Among these are Livestock Production, Swine Production, Livestock Specialty, Beef Production, Sheep Production and beautification. The work begins early in the fall. When the staff sells yearbooks to all who wish to have this memory of the 1973-1974 school year at Clinton High School. At the same time, staff members are using their free time trying to solicit ads from businesses and establishments to help defray the expenses of publishing a yearbook. These ads appear in the back of the book. Throughout the year, the staff is constantly working to meet the necessary deadlines so that the students of C. C. H. During the beginning of December, the Council initiated a Hall Decorating contest-participants were the four classes and the French club. The winner was the Senior Hall. In January the Council sponsored a Concert featuring a folk singer and a rock band. Working with the FFA, Mr. Prather, Mr. Konrad and Mr. Ritter; the council hopes to help landscape the school with then $500.00 and money from FFA. The council also donated $200. 00 to Mr. Van for band Uniforms, and $800. 00 for new Trophy cases. With the aid of Mr. Vander-kloot, the project is hoped to be finished by the end of the year. The Girls Athletic Association is devoted to promoting physical activity and good sportsmanship. During the year, the members engage in various activities such as hiking, bowling, flag fodtball, volleyball, dodgeball, and softball. Each fall, GAA holds an informal initiation and weiner roast for all new members. Later in the spring, the club has a formal initiation of these same girls along with the newly elected officers for the coming year. Serving as officers for 1973-74 were: Sally Utterback, president; Mary McConnell, vice president; Tina Carter, secretary; Judy Reinhart, treasurer; Cindy Linderman, sports manager; Tracy Cannon, student council rep. ; and Vicki Eich and Debbie McFeeters, points chairmen. Under the direction of Mrs. Kratz, GAA designed and constructed a float which placed second in the annual homecoming parade. Another of the club's yearly events is the Christmas Party and gift exchange, complete with a visit from Santa. For the second year in a row, the GAA bowling team captured first place in the district tournament. This year's Varsity basketball squad was coached by Jim Bader, with the help of his assistant coach, Dennis Mannix. The team consisted of seven Seniors, all of whom had had previous experience. Along with the Seniors were four Juniors, one Sophomore, and three Freshmen. The team played very hard all season and were a great improvement over last year. The 1974 Track Team, coached by Mr. A1 Austin, had another good season, putting out tremendous efforts in each meet in which they competed. They ended the season with a 7-6 record. The team had four Senior members: Connie Gardner, one of the seven girls who were out for track; Steve Miller; Steve Smith, who went to State and was co-cap-tain; and Steve Nixon, also co-captain. Steve Smith had the record 42'2 3 4 for triple jump, plus he was also entered in the sprint relays. Steve Nixon had a throw of 48'7 1 2 in the shot put for a school record. Steve Miller entered in the 440, mile relay, long jump, and triple jump. Danny Cummings, Randy Thomas, Scott Oakman, and Gary Arnold had a 46. 6 record in the 440 relay.
