o o September, 1948, with knocking knees and chattering teeth 139 greenies placed their big flat feet on the premises of CCHS for the first time--that was us! We were scared but braved the elements and began our career by electing Jacky Vinson, Sonny VanArsdall, Carolyn Shaw, and Martha Lampe as our class officers; Miss Rainey was our advisor. We had a lot of fun with our pails and cups (the boys won) collecting money for our Spring Party. Jacky Vinson was selected to reign as May Queen for the event. The year ended and we were promoted to silly sophomores . a In September of 1949 we again lifted our fallen arches over the threshhold, a few less in number but much braver than before. Miss Marshall-advised the class; and Bill Stennett, Sonny Van Arsdall, Jacky Vinson, and Vernon Leinweber were elected to serve as class officers. At our St. Patrick's party, Don Reynolds was crowned King. A high time was had by all at the picnic at Corrington Park. Q Time passed and at last the long awaited junior year came, bringing with it class rings; the play-- Clementine”; a chilisupper with Mr. White's home room as the guests; (He had some mignty good salesmen.) and the preparations for the Prom. Virginia Bowles, Charles Wilson, Joyce Armstrong, and Jackie Hermann were the class officials for these events but Mr. White was in charge of the headaches. The theme for the Prom was the Mardi Gras. The festival dancers, fishermen's net of balloons, confetti, flower gardens, and the music of Johnny Moreland entertained us during that unforgettable evening. After the ballots had been counted we found Leonard McCrory had been elected President of the Student Cabinet by an overwhelming majority. Phil Sharkey and Doris Benefiel also were elected cabinet members. The eventful year ended and with mixed emotions we became serious seniors . The paths to the institution were automatic to our aching callouses and when September, 1951 rolled around we once again turned toward higher education. Things began happening at once. A1 Olsen made music for our dancing and Doris Benefiel wore the Queen’s crown at the Homecoming Dance. Virginia Hoge, Carolyn Snaw, Joyce Armstrong, and Virginia Bowles attended the popular queen. The magazine sales found new glories for senior salesmanship--our trophy is in the show case. Goldie Bell, Sonny VanArsdall, Junior Adams, and Bob Harrold were elected to rule with Mrs. Knochel over the class of 52. The boys fixed up some chili, and much to the surprise of the girls, everyone lived through it--in fact, it was good! Small white name cards and pictures of our mangy muggs made their appearances. Tom Brandon assisted by Virginia Hoge and many other energetic souls began working their cameras and typewriters to the Done to produce this book for you. Virginia Hoge was nonored with the DAR award. The question was universally being asked Are You Mr. Butterworth? 3 In a scurry the Prom, Class Night, Baccalaureate, Honor's Day, and Graduation came and 104 Seniors became the 52 Grads. We hated to leave the place we had become so much a part of but new roads challenged our ambitions.
