As you journey on the sea of education and look back over the horizon, your former school fades from view. It brought you many pleasant memories, but so has your freshman year. The officers chosen by the freshmen “plebs were fane Ruth Gustafson and George Herrick, co-chairmen; Mary Alice Luker, Mary Margaret Lawler, and Coleman Harris, the assisting officers. The student body bestowed an honor on one of your freshmen mates, Hazel Sue Hemmick, by electing her as a member of the Student Cabinet. The plebs out for athletics were Raymond Tate, Bob Myers, and Bill Garvin. The music department was pleased with the honors awarded to Mary Ann Moots, winning first division in the state band solo contest, and to Charles Campbell, winning first division in the state vocal contest. At the freshman meetings, scheduled the fourth Monday of every month, the members have had an opportunity to exhibit a wide variety of talent. The “budding socialites enjoyed a class party—one hilarious evening of dancing and bunco. The excellent assembly program on the etiquette and history of our flag has been highly commended by the student body. Miss loote is the efficient adviser of the freshman class. As midshipmen, you are striving toward your goal of higher education. The sophomores who aspired to the distinction of class officers were Dora Herrick, chairman; Laura Ellen Smith, Dorothy Jean Wilson, Madelyn Griffin, and Gleason Mahoney. A party consisting of bunco and dancing, an amateur hour presented for general assembly, and meetings on the third Monday of each month have comprised the social class events of the year. Virginia Belyea and Dale Simpson were the successful sophomore candidates in the Student Cabinet election. The athletes of the sophomore class are Jack Pearl, Don North, Gleason Mahoney, Edwin Westray, and Leland Simcox. The outstanding musicians are Dora Herrick, Gleason Mahoney, and Dale Simpson, who won first in the state band solo contest. Herrick and Mahoney also won 2nd division ratings at the National Contest. Seniors, you are about to launch forth upon commencement. C. C. H. S. is sorry to see you go, but we know that you have striven toward graduation. We hope that your memories of our school are pleasant ones. The senior class officers were John Hull, president; Mary Gustafson, vice-president; Dorys Alvey, secretary; and Doris Sympson, treasurer. Student Cabinet members from the senior class were Jeanne Morin, president, Gene Vance, George McCoil, and Wilma Wright. The five seniors that represented athletics were John Kent, Jim Corrington, Don Abrell, Gene Vance, and Don Woodrum. John Kent was awarded the cup in honor of his being the most valuable player on the Clinton basketball team. An honor was also bestowed on Gene Vance—that of being named as one of the five players on the all-state basketball team. There were sixteen seniors in the band. Two of them, Jeanne Morin and Jodie Buntin, won first in the slate band solo contest and participated in the national contest held in Battle Creek, Michigan. Jeanne Morin won 1st division on the marimba; Wilma Wright won 1st division on the cornet; Donald Evans and Harry Gotti won 2nd and 4th division respectively as student conductors and Jodie Buntin won 2nd division rating in twirling. A wiener roast and dance was given by the senior class. The seniors have been busying themselves with pass for Commencement. Mr. Evans is the competent adviser of the senior class. SARIG BAND No organization in our high school appears before the public in the course of the school year more than the band. During the past nine months it has appeared before an estimated 93,300 people from all over the central states. A few days before school commenced this year the band was asked to lead the Labor Day parade in Decatur. An enormous crowd of 50,000 spectators thrilled to the strains of the band marching down the street. With the ushering in of the football season the band marched for all home games. At each appearance a big C was formed before the home crowd and the initial letter of the visiting school before their followers. Other formations on the march were C C H S and USA. (Continued from Page 50) Invitation Marching Contest a cannon was made, symbolizing war, and a dove, representing peace. For these and other formations the band was awarded the trophy for the most novel performance in addition to first division in Class B bands. At the home basketball games the band played while the crowd was assembling and presented feature numbers during half time. As usual, the band gave an annual concert which was enjoyed by the audience because of the excellent rendition of such difficult numbers as the Manx Overture. Not to be outdone, the band won first division rating at the District contest held in Clinton. Thirty schools participated with about 2,000 students attending. Clinton also was given first division rating in the State Contest held at Champaign and was recommended to the National Contest held in Battle Creek, Mich., where it was awarded 2nd division. In addition to the band twenty-three soloists and ensembles were sent to the same contest. Additional awards were: first and second cornet trios 2nd division; the flute quartet 3rd division; horn quartet 3rd division and the saxophone sextette 3rd rating. Courtesy of J. II. Scliniith Son GLEE CLUB NINETEEN FORTY S3 Under the capable direction of Miss Imogene Underwood the Girls' Glee Club has justly earned much praise and several honors. Its initial public performance of consequence was its Christmas Cantata. Robed in white and in the atmosphere of ’a candle light service the members pleased the audience with their presentation. This spring during both the District and State Contests the excellent rendition of their numbers won for the Glee Club and its director first division rating. Recommended to the National Contest it journeyed to Spring-field, May 11, to compete with similar organizations from neighboring states v here it was awarded 2nd division lUting.
