Annual Stall Since 1910 the annual has missed only three years of publication. This splendid record has been upheld this year by the staff pictured here. Soon after Miss Katherine Chase, adviser, appointed the staff last fall, work was begun on the 1939 yearbook. At iirst it was mostly routine, arranging sched- ules, seeing that pictures were taken, etc. The work soon settled down to a steady grind which lasted Well into May. By May, over 1,000 Work hours had been spent on the annual. Clintonian Stall The Clintonian Staff is responsible for the publication of 16 issues of HTIIF Clintonian? Each year the paper is entered in the NSPA critical contest. At Cedar Rapids, Clinton via the air, snatched a 7-0 victory over Roosevelt high. None of the players will forget that ankle-deep mud! In the last game, the favored Clinton squad moved to their jinx city, Dubuque. Here amid mud, Dubuquels homecoming, and the sparkling performance of Horner and Helling, they were defeated 13-6. Although there was not an abundance of vic- tories, this year will be long remembered for many things. First year under f'Peck Geneva, a new system, namely the unbalanced line with single and double wing back formation, the Lund-t0- johnson passing combination, the broken field running of Bob Machael, and the huge home- coming crowd and game, and the dashes in the mud, and the St. Ambrose massacre. At the end of the season Ira Lund was elected most valuable player by his team mates. Morrie johnson was named honorary captain and Glen Jepson the best sport. Georgie at it again .... Under the guidance of Coach Fred Geneva, newly from Albia, the Kings built up an air-tight defense, and a fast breaking offense. The defense, renowned throughout the state, was mainstayed by little jack Walker. Bob Schneider and Ira Lund also did good work in that respect. The fast breaks were left up to Holle and Machael, who played nicely during the season. Other sen- iors figuring in the games were Kenny Johannsen and Norm Johanson. In the Conference playoff, game after game fell as a victory to the Red and Black. That is, all except the game which was lost to Dubuque. The Clintonians met up with an unconquerable defense and went down to defeat, 26-19. Then an old time rivalry sprang up again as the Clintonians and the Davenport Blue Devils tan- gled for the Mississippi Valley conference cham- pionship. The River Kings met defeat on the Washington junior high hardwood. Two weeks later, they again were defeated in Davenport to Page 54 ohannsen, Leonard llill, Robert Machael. the tune of 41-35. Because of the two losses at the hands of Davenport, the Kings came in third in the conference. The squad completed their successful season by fighting their way to the state meet in Des Moines. This is the first time in 24 years that a Clinton team has competed in a state meet. Removing all obstacles on the way, including Davenport, the River Kings were finally stopped by the strong Diagonal lads who were defending their title of State Champs. . In the Sectional, Clinton eliminated Lyons easily, 43-32. Then came an upset which gave the Kings encouragement to go on, they defeated Davenport Z3-16. Progressing into the District meet, the Red and Black banished the hopes of three more teams. They defeated Fairfield, Iowa City, and Wilton Junction respectively, the action taking place at the University of Iowa Fieldhouse. Traclcsters Win Meets The track team this year, like football and basketball, began its season with a new head coach, Fred Peck Geneva of Albia. Beginning the .season with a well-balanced squad, Clinton moved to Iowa City for the Miss- issippi Valley Indoor Conference Meet. The River Kings were triumphant in this meet with McKinley, the runner-up. Bob Machael in winning the high jump set a new indoor conference record of 5' 10 , The relay teams also did well in amassing a good portion of the olyq points. The next week, the Kings moved once again to Iowa City, this time for the State indoor meet. Amid stiff competition in which Davenport an- nexed the title, the Clintonians registered a fifth place. On Friday, April 21, the Clinton squad travel- ing to Davenport, took second in the running of Page 58 the fourth annual Davenport Relays. A meet, de- vised to afford competition for Iowa and Illinois schools, turned out to be a dual meet between the host team and Clinton, with Davenport pulling out in the last stages to win by a ten point margin. The following week, Clinton slaughtered Du- buque in a dual meet here, when Lund broke the school's shotput and discus records. The final score was Clinton 126, Dubuque 44. This brings team activity up to the Gateway Classic which is explained on the next page. The annual went to press a few days after the Gateway Classic thus necessitating an end to the account of the squad. Everyone will remember, Lund in the field events, Machael in the high jump, Nelson in the dashes and the fine team in general. Gateway Winners With the result doubtful until the iinal seconds, the River Kings won the nineteenthtannual Gate- Way Classic with a margin of one point over Davenport. Machael's victory in the high jump and broad jump proved the deciding factor in the meet. Ira Lund shattered the javelin mark for the only broken record of the meet. He set a new mark of 177' S . Junior- Senior l-loclcey Block That Drive Watch That Goal Page 60 One of the most outstanding sports among junior and senior girls is hockey. It was started in Clinton high school in 1927. When freshmen and sophomores are working for the volleyball team, juniors and seniors get out their warmest sweaters, so they may take part in the hockey tournament. Each team consists of 11 members, tive forwards, three halfbacks, two full- backs and a goal keeper. The goal keeper has one of the most responsible positions because it is by her quick actions that many possible scores are blocked. For making the hockey team a student receives 50 points toward her G. A. A. letter. Q, 'Marilyn Westbo captained the senior team and Margaret Kaack led the juniors. On November 14, the juniors defeated the seniors 1-0. Inez Stratton was scorer. November 16, Marilyn Westbo and Ruth Doyle scored two goals for the seniors, while Mildred Woods scored one for the juniors. On November 21, Jeanette Ekland scored the only goal when the seniors won 1-0. Volleyball Volleyball, a comparatively new sport at Clinton high school, is limited to freshmen and sophomores. This sport was started at C. H. S. in 1935 under the supervision of Miss Juanita Reed, girls' athletic director. As it is a sport for underclassmen, it is offered in the first term gym classes. At the end of the fall season tryouts are held and teams are chosen. A team must win live games to claim the championship. The sophomores won the tournament by being victors of live games over the freshmen's four. Gwen F rimoth was volleyball manager. Captain of the freshman and sophomore teams were Lois Stamp and Ada Bradley, respectively. This sport is particularly well adapted to the physical education program due to the fact that it may be played both indoors and out. CDver the Net Don?
