Financial Adviser Miss Dawes General Adviser Miss Davies Art Adviser Mr. Chaney DEDICATION Mrs. Maude G. Luther Dear Mrs. Luther, Nearly six years ago we came to your classes — a group of very proud, bewildered, mixed up new seventh graders. You enlightened us on the mysteries of High School and helped us orient to our new surroundings and ways of doing things. Almost without our realizing, you went from the school to the Community and we learned all sorts of things that make us proud of our town and its history. From Community to County to State, you took us. All the time we were learning to stand on our own feet, to do our work without supervision, to fit into our school and our Community as good citizens. The Historical Club trips to Saratoga and Hyde Park are high spots in our memories of Junior High. We know how generously you gave your time and effort to make them possible and successful. Your guidance, interest, enthusiasm, and helpfulness have made you a teacher we shall remember. We wish you many happy years to enjoy leisure — free from the trials of a school day. To say thank you, we dedicate this, our Clintonian to you. Tk ri— IN MEMORY Miss Bessie A. Griffin Miss Griffin will live on forever in our hearts, for we will remember her as a wonderful teacher, a marvelous person, and a friend in our time of need. As a teacher, she gave us excellent ground material in English grammar, read us many thrilling stories, and taught us familiar poems which we will always remember. As a friend, she was concerned with our well-being and ready to help us at any time At the Hamilton College Commencement in 1957, Miss Griffin was awarded an Honorary Degree, Master of Humane Letters. A Hamilton Alumnus and former pupil of Miss Griffin's, Louis N. Brockway, presented her for the degree with the following citation: It is a challenge indeed to cite a daughter of the fomed 'Farmer Orator' of New York's turbulent Barge Canol ero, and to cite one who hos herself spent a lifetime ably teaching effective writing. Much must be said in little space. We foil if we do not re-creote the image of you as a young lady, surely little older than your pupils, first, teaching in the one-room school on the edge of this campus; later, trudging five miles doily to and from elementary classes in the village. We must recall the many days when you were the first to reach the schoolhouse and the last to leave; the many evenings spent directing ploys and counselling your pupils. We must tell of the personal drive behind your preparation to teach in high school, and of your subsequent achievement in giving many generations of young people — among them many who are Hamilton men, including the one who stands beside you now — superb foundation in the English language. But more, we must catch that spark within your personality that mokes it unthinkable that a pupil would ever come before you more than once without having done the best work of which he was capable. It has been said thot os a Clinton teacher with a road named after you, you are unique. Even more certain, indeed, is the uniqueness of your distinguished and unstinting service to this community over half a century. CLASS OFFICERS ADVISORS MISS DAWES MISS BATLEY James Wilkinson, President; Dorothy Moxwell, Treas- urer; Donna Facteau, Secretary; Edward Kaido, Vice- President. CLASS LOG 17 September 1954 — The SS Class of '58 was officially launched when seventy-two excited freshmen filled the auditorium to elect frosh crew officers. Arthur Kusienski was chosen Captain; Ann Lewis, Executive Of- ficer; Alison Hall, Paymaster; and Dulcie Heintz, Ship's Yeoman. We were then underway. Our destination? Graduation, 1958! 16 October 1954 — Our first class project was attempted — a bake sale. We netted the staggering amount of fifty dollars. Our treasury was growing. November 1954 — Our financial course was really determined when, thanks to the many doorbell-pushing frosh, we began a magazine subscription drive which ended in a four hundred seventy dollar addition to our treasury. John Feketa topped everyone with over eighty dollars worth of subscriptions. 4 March 1955 — The SS Class of '58 proved its worth as a class in the Winter Carnival. It won first prize in the Junior High skits by acting out the chanty, The Darktown Strutters' Ball. Chet Galinski and Jeanne Williams were the stars of the production. Moreover, we took the five dollar first prize in the class races. 20 May 1955 — The year rapidly ending, our final class project was a freshman dance. Moonlight Serenade was chosen as our title, and the night of the dance found a fancily decorated gym, complete with a dangling mobile as a centerpiece. September 1954 — June 1955 — Outstanding members of the freshman class were in the majority. Ed Blankman was elected President of the Little Three Council, and Dulcie Heintz became a finalist in the Miss CCHS contest. June 1955 — Graduation found our ship ending her maiden year, and we could hardly wait for the second year of our cruise. 13 September 1955 — We were under way again! Chosen to Captain our sophomore year was James Wilkinson. Ann Lewis was returned as Executive Officer, and Ron Gleasman took over as class Yeoman. Peggy Drake became the soph Paymaster. 5 November 1955 — The Texas Rangers rode our first soph class project to a rip roarin' success. 26 January 1956 — The SS Class of '58 rock 'n' rolled her way to first prize in the Winter Carnival by acting out the song The Rock 'n' Roll Waltz. Top honors for the snow-sculpturing contest were also taken by the crew. A ski jump and a rather unfortunate skier were pictured. 14 April 1956 — Next on our horizon came the Sophomore Carnival which proved a great success, even though our attempt at a kissing booth was defeated by our sponsors. Our sideshow featured the Four Deuces — Crossley, Drake, Garland, and Kusienski; a wrestling match — Baby Face Gleasman, Dirty Dan Bacon, Creepy John Crossley, and Jungle Jim Wilkinson. With these and other acts, the house was packed four times! 8 June 1956 — Spring brought the annual Senior-Sophomore Reception and the climax of our second year. The cafeteria was gayly decorated with flowers, and, after it was all over, we had a party of our own, complete with fifty-four bottles of soda and tons of potato chips. June 1956 — The end of our second year cruise was a nightmare of vitamins, postulates, photosynthesis, feudalism, Caesar, formulas, and finally, Regents. 14 September 1956 — A-Hoy, we just passed the point of no return; we're upperclassmen! Elected to head the SS Class of '58 was Edward Kaido; next in command was Bonnie Burdick, while Donna Facteau became class Yeoman, and Chet Galinski, the head Paymaster. October and November 1956 — The perennial junior problem of picking class rings confronted the crew. The frenzied ring committee met, debated, and finally selected three rings. After much deliberation, the class voted on them and then ordered the best-looking rings the school had ever seen — at least we thought so. The rings finally arrived the day before Christmas vacation! 3 May 1957 — After a trying midyear, our biggest and best class project lay squarely off our starboard bow — the Junior Prom. Caribbean Cruise was, nautically enough, chosen as our theme with a colorful coral, blue, yellow, green, and brown ceiling to top off our decorations. Thanks to the Admiral, Mr. Chaney, we scored a first with round, bulging walls instead of flat conventional ones. The magical Friday night of May the third found a beautifully decorated gym with green walls splashed with the fauna and flora of a West Indies isle. An island, complete with a treasure chest, Sadaquada sand, and a tropical moon, stood as the centerpiece. The highlight of the evening came with the crowning of our lovely queen, Donna Facteau. 7 June 1957 — At our last class meeting as a junior class, Phyllis Kitchen was selected as editor-in-chief of our Yearbook. In another three months we would be seniors, approaching the end of our four-year voyage. 20 September 1957 — We are seniors — suddenly! James Wilkinson was chosen to lead the SS Class of '58 on the final year of her voyage. Ed Kaido became the Executive Officer, Dorothy Maxwell, the chief Paymaster, and Donna Facteau, again the class Yeoman. September 1957 — June 1958 — Our last year as a class was our biggest, the best, and, of course, the most fun. Dorothy Maxwell became our D. A. R. good citizen, and orator Dulcie Heintz won first prize in the Oneida County I Speak For Democracy con- test. Jack Haynes was elected Senior Student Council President in May of '57 and led the Council and seniors through a wonderful Community Day and Christmas Whirl. The Class of '58 chose white and gold as her class colors, and her Year- book staff departed from tradition and chose these colors to adorn the cover. Kansas City got a treat when John Feketa, Melvin Bonsel, Dale Champ- ion, Wellington Barker, Dick Galinski, and Dave Dawes of the F.F.A. went there for the annual Future Farmers of America National Convention. Journalistically, Julie Anne Garland was elected Challenger editor, and a Student of the Month series was begun in the Courier. June 1958 — The Chem Lab was put to rest, at last, and all our classes became shorter and shorter as Regents drew nearer and nearer, and, after Regents and our class picnic, there was but one thing left — Graduation. With it, as we filed off the stage that June night, ended our class log. The SS Class of '58 had completed her voyage, but she would forever sail onward in our hearts. c tBBEAN CRU S STAR GAZING Our ship leaves its port in June, The seas look wide and bright. Contributing to the fine slate of officers were: Vice-President, Charles Dziuban; Scribe, Carolyn Zumbrun; Treasurer, Arthur Kusien- ski; and Corresponding Secretary, Barbara Cote. A bigger and better Community Day, a phenomenal Christmas Whirl, the Winter Carnival, the election of Sportsmanship Broth- erhood members, and capable supervision of the corridors and cafeteria were only a few traditional projects undertaken by this year's governing body. Of course, this successful year could not have been possible without the helpful guid- ance and kind patience of our advisers, Miss Howlett and Mr. Vivyan. LITTLE THREE COUNCIL First Row: L. Standing: Chorles Judge, Edward Blankmon, Phyllis Kitchen. This year's Society, although limited in activity, sponsored a unique assembly. It pitted the scholastic- ally top high school students against each other. Ques- tions from various categories were asked, and points were given for the correct answers. Not only a test for scholastic skill, but also for quickness and accuracy, this assembly was a great success for the Society. Officers elected this year were Arthur Kusienski, President; Allyn Earl, Vice-President; and Phyllis Kit- chen, Secretary - Treasurer. Any junior or senior who has maintained an average of eighty-five per cent or above is eligible for mem- bership in the National Honor Society. The group prepared a most entertaining program for the Christmas and Spring concerts. It has traveled to Rome to play grade 6 music in the Festival competition, and to complete the year the orchestra played at Commencement. Playing in the orchestra gives the members an opportunity to appreciate good music by act- ually playing it. These people are indeed very fortunate to have this experience. In the fall the C. C. H. S. band played at the home football games and marched in the Community Day parade. After the football season was completed, the band could be heard preparing for the annual Christmas Concert. In the spring it presented a laudable performance at the Spring Concert and participated in the solemn Memorial Day exercises. Playing grade four music, the band competed in the Festival competition held at Rome. The year was an eventful one by which every member has gained musical knowledge and experience in playing his respective instru- ment. The band is an integral part of all school activities, and we, the graduates, hope that it will always remain this way. CHORUS J. D'Aprix Accompanist Echoes of fine music are heard from the auditorium twice a week. These echoes are the spirited voices of the Senior High Chorus practicing for their annual Christmas and Spring Concerts. In spite of the fleeting noon hours, the Chorus, under the patient direc- tion of Mr Milograno, managed to perform excellently at both concerts. We, the Sen- iors, hope the chorus will become an even greater musical group in the school and in the area. First Row: G. Kelsey, A. Cushman, G. Kelsey, A. Acee, B. Cote, K. Morey, J. Roberts, B.
