In Memory • • • Ralph Charles Tears, Jr. IT IS IMPOSSIBLE TO REMEMBER A FRIEND WHO HAS PASSED AWAY WITHOUT FINDING A TEAR IN YOUR EYE OR A LUMP IN YOUR THROAT. THE TASK BECOMES EVEN MORE DIFFICULT WHEN HIS MEMORY BRINGS TO MIND SUCH HAPPY TIMES AS THE SENIOR TRIP AND SUNDAY AFTERNOON FOOTBALL GAMES. ONE CANNOT THINK OF RALPH WITHOUT ALSO THINKING OF THE HAPPINESS HE BROUGHT TO OTHERS. HIS WARM SMILE BROUGHT SUNSHINE INTO THE LIVES OF MANY CHILDREN AT THE ROTARY SUMMER CAMP. THE OL’E DEUCE COUPE WAS A WELCOME SIGHT TO ALL OF HIS FRIENDS. FRIENDLINESS AND COURAGE WERE RALPH’S TRADEMARKS AND FOR THESE QUALITIES — BECAUSE HE WAS THE MAN WHOM WE ALL ADMIRED SO MUCH — WE DEDICATE THIS PAGE TO THE MEMORY OF RALPH CHARLES TEARS, JR. 1970 CUFTOMIAN Sja'tUtgs GtodMtlL Qckoob Cfofjto QfnlttijS f-ltCjh QcUool Chiton SfwXacjS, NfiW' Yotk 144-32 UNITED WE STAND All of us in the Phelps-Clifton Springs School District -students, parents, teachers, administrators, secretaries, bus drivers, custodians, cafeteria workers, board members - are about to end an old era and begin a new one. For many years now, it has been Phelps versus Clifton Springs - in academics, in sports, in facilities and in just about any other competitive way imaginable. That division no longer exists. Legally, we have been one school district since June 1967 but we have thus far maintained almost complete physical separation. With the opening of our new school building next fall, that physical separation will be a thing of the past. We shall be together as one student body, one faculty, one team. We shall no longer be subject to the many weaknesses of a house divided because we shall have a common house which will draw its strength from the students it receives from the entire school district. Chiefly, this strength will make a lasting contribution to the improvement of instruction for the students of Phelps-Clifton Springs. Together, we shall face this new era with courage and determination to provide the best in education for every child in the school district. John D. And what a delightful and memorable year it was! I’d like to thank the many people who made possible these lasting memories: Randy Wood, Financial Editor; Jennifer Richardson, Assistant Editor, and the entire Cliftonian Staff. My special thanks go to Mr. Gover, our faculty advisor, who contributed immeasurably to the production (of Cliftonian ’70). My gratitude, as well, goes to all of the students, faculty, and administrators, who are Clifton Springs High School. -Keg” 6 7 A 9 SENIORS 13 14 The history of the Class of 1970 is an exciting one which can hardly be told by the pictures in this book or the lines on this page. Ever since the first Bake Sale in our Freshman year, we have shown ourselves to be one of the most progressive classes ever to be graduated from Clifton Springs High School. In our sophomore year we continued our enterprising efforts with a Sock-Hop and pop-bottle drive, and the Washington trip grew ever closer. As Juniors, our play, The Solid Gold Cadillac and our prom, Purple Haze” added successful spice to other moneymaking projects such as the Chicken Barbecue and the refreshment stand at athletic events. When faced with Seniordom,” we became all the more enterprising and smashed all previous magazine campaign records, selling more than $8300 worth of merchandise. If That’s Where It’s At, Baby, I’m Not Going was still another success on stage. Of course, the fun came when we got to spend our earnings on the Washington trip - what a glorious time we had. Oh, and don’t forget our Senior Ball in addition to all that Senior splendor. And now we’re at the final step - graduation. What a spectacular time it has all been! The Class of 1970 would like to thank everyone who made these unforgettable years in high school possible and with that we say good-bye!” 15 DANA EUGENE ALLEN Doc I would sooner fail than not be among the greatest. In realization of the fact that she has helped so many of us in so many ways, and in hopes of expressing our sincere gratitude, we dedicate the 1970 Cliftonian to Mrs. Marie Nash. 29 fit In these times of changing and conflicting ideas and ideals, a greater burden is necessarily placed on those who hold positions of responsibility. We extend our sincere appreciation to Mr. George Bidleman, a man who, as Principal of Clifton Springs High School, has earnestly helped all of us to live and work better together. A special word of thanks to Mr. John Farnsworth who, by answering our many questions and withstanding our scant replies, has prepared us in countless ways for the future. Our own Mr. Wizard” has certainly given us much more to remember than a course in Chemistry or Physics. 30 31 32 CURRJCUUJ U 33 ENGLISH: Mr. Onorato Miss Frost Mrs. Stambach ENGLISH: Miss Holden Mrs. Smith Mrs. Tiedemann LANGUAGE: Mrs. Huff, Mrs. Nash. 34 I SOCIAL STUDIES: Mr. Wertz, Mr. Cobbett, Mr. Brown SOCIAL STUDIES: Mr. Osterhout, Mr. Burke SCIENCE: Mr. Cyphert, Mr. Taylor 35 BUSINESS EDUCATION: Mr. Banficld Mrs. Rolfe Mr. Calkins MATH. The golf team enjoyed the most successful season so far last year, compiling a record of 5-7, finishing 4th in the league. The team’s newest member, Elaine Dalrymple, was the first girl ever to compete on a boys athletic team in the history of Clifton Springs and contributed to 2 of the team’s wins. A-V members must pass certain written tests before they can operate and maintain the club's equipment. Without the assistance of A-V members, teachers and students would not be able to reap the full benefits of audio-visual aids. Au -Vtsoftt Club Ph )toqiOf luj Club Members of the Photography Club perform a dual role in that it is both a service and educational organization. They learn to use various photographic equipment and to develop and print pictures. The club, with the great aid of Mr. Farnsworth, is invaluable to the production of the Cliftonian. It provides many of the candids and formal pictures used in the production of our yearbook. 72 Tddfacb Qboty The Trident, our school newspaper. acts as the heart of the student body by writing the thoughts and beliefs of the students. It publishes articles relevant to all, from sports, organizations, and plays to Can you Picture?” and the local gossip. Everyone has the opportunity to express their views on various topics such as the Vietnam War. The staff works diligently in creating such a production. This year they have added more photography and even a new love-sick” column. M Club In the Art Club, the members work together on various projects that interest them such as bottle stretching, lettering, and enameling. Besides developing their talents they sell their products to earn money for such goals as field trips and art shows. 73 UlnCtJuj Club The Library Club members are of real value to the operation of the library. Membership is limited to those who are genuinely interested in helping and can donate at least one period a week to hard library work. PuiuAJb The Future Teachers of America is an organization which acquaints the members with the teaching profession and prepares them for work in this field. Members are given actual work experience by work-.ng cooperatively with classroom teachers on lessons and projects. 74 Fuiuvt NuaSGS The purpose of the Future Nurses Club is to help members become acquainted with the varied health careers open to interested people in today’s world. They broaden their knowledge by taking two field trips a year to nearby hospitals and state schools, such as the Newark State School and Willard State Hospital. Membership in the Future Homemakers of America provides opportunities for girls to have additional experience in planning and executing activities related to homemaking. Thus the club is a compliment to the homemaking program in the school. 75 Q dcyt Colo Qtuud A vital part of the band is the Color Guard. The Senior Band could not march without the representation of our beloved school, state and country. In turn, these flags could never fly freely without the protection of the two guns which protect the sacred flags and represent unity. 76 Bond ft f t r. ft; . 1 i L r I ! 11 A ▼ •' } Vfc 1 1 . «■ if. ? 1 • v f A J V r (V %r %r. The members of the Senior Band not only wish to fulfill their own talents and interests in instrumental music, but enjoy supporting Clifton Springs at home football games and Memorial Day parades. Their effort and diligence comes to a grand finale in their Spring Concert. TwhltoS Everyone must agree that these six lively, pretty girls in their new uniforms certainly dress up the Senior Band as they march down the street. They definitely attract everyone’s attention. 77 Jcuuto Wtgfi Cluvtus The Junior High Chorus has the opportunity to rehearse only once a week, but are able to present two fine concerts a year. They are always enthusiastic in their endeavors for greater musical accomplishments. The Reflections, a newly formed girls’ sextet, enjoy singing and have worked very hard to harmonize their alto, second soprano, and soprano voices. They participated in the elementary Christmas Choral Concert and are anxious to perform in the new Mid-Lakes High School. 78 BcliO S This is the second year the Echoes have been singing together. Their voices blend beautifully in their performances. They are presently making appearances in churches and at banquets as well as several concerts. This sextet hopes to sing next year in the Mid-Lakes High School. Q tLfri ChcwuS The success of this large choral group was largely because of the enthusiasm and talent of each individual member, the three pianists, Marcia Ogden, Debbie Kamm, and Judy Drabicki as well as the fine direction of Mrs. Linder. The Senior Chorus performed very well at their two concerts this year. 79 JumZ v Field Qmflte The ultimate goal of A.F.S. is to promote world peace through understanding. The participants work throughout the year on various money-making projects such as pizza days and penny days. In this manner, a foreign student is able to stay in Clifton Springs for one school year and a Clifton student may also be sent abroad during the summer. Thus representatives from nations promote world understanding and peace through the American Field Service. MONICA F.LDH 1969-70 Monica Eldh is our A.F.S. representative from Krylbo, Sweden. Her combined intelligence, wit, and humor, has helped her to blend well with the American people. Clifton Springs will certainly feel the loss when Monica returns to Sweden in July, 1970. Jag vill tacka alia er som gett mcj en toppenkul vistelse i er lilla stad.” PATRICK (TED) KEGEL 1969-70 (Summer) A.F.S. made it possible for Ted Kegel to enjoy a most enriching experience in Germany. Ted stayed with the Hans Schroder family in Kiel, Germany, where he spent ten weeks swimming, sailing, and socializing while learning a bit of the language and customs of the German people. LESLIE VAN ROMER and MONICA Monica is living with the Edward Van Romcr family, Leslie being her American sister and senior companion. They have become very close in their year together and are doubtful their friendship will end when Monica leaves the VanRomers. 81 Uo«xw Society THE NATIONAL HONOR SOCIETY is a nation-wide organization which is extremely selective in membership. One must maintain the high qualifications of scholarship, character, leadership, and service in order to have the honor of becoming a member. Our N.H.S. is active in that we manage a book store where we sell books once a month to fellow students and teachers. With the money we earn, we give several large scholarships to the seniors who are outstanding in the four N.H.S. characteristics. 82 Leslie” Dave” Linda” Marcia” Becky” Dan” 7©f Th j ”Bruce” 83 1970 AFS SEMI-FINALISTS: Elizabeth Goodman, Denise Phillips.
