7969 CLIFTONIAN ' Central School District Number One Phelps and Clifton Springs CLIFTON SPRINGS HIGH SCHOOL Clifton Springs, New York Let the word go forth from this time and place to friend and foe alike that The Torch Has Been Passed to a new generation of Americans.” These words, spoken by John F. Kennedy at his inauguration on January 20, 1961, represent the theme of the 1969 Clintonian. It is this idea, that our generation—the generation of the hippies, the bomb, civil rights, Viet Nam, and love—will pick up this torch and carry it high and proudly. Through words and pictures we will show you how we have prepared for this challenge and will accept it as we leave Clifton Springs High School. 2 Cliftonian The 1969 Cliftonian staff chose as the theme of this year’s book, The Torch Has Been Passed.” To carry this theme throughout the book it became a complicated and time-consuming task. It took hours upon hours of work by every member of the staff to complete his job and meet his deadline. It could only have been possible due to the efforts of my dedicated and responsible staff. I’d like to express my thanks to all the members for their help and most especially to Mr. Gover, our advisor, and to Ted Kegel, my assistant editor. We could never have had all of the candids that you will find in the succeeding pages if it hadn’t been for the cooperation of our fine photography club. As you read the book keep in mind the theme. While glancing at the pages notice the beautiful colored pictures and candids on each of the senior pages. Find yourself in a picture that you didn’t even realize had been taken! So don’t stop now! There's lots to see and, I hope, enjoy! Dm 4 Administration JOHN D. FAHY JOHN E. LOVELESS District Principal District Principal Ontario, Seneca, Yates WILBUR K. HARTMANN KENNETH L. WILLARD GEORGE D. On a certain evening in June the completion of 12 years of struggling and succeeding, searching and discovering, will be reached. As we bid a fond farewell to Clifton Springs High School, we know that a part of us will always remain there, buried deep in a vast reservoir of good times. In anticipation of this ultimate goal, we sponsored our first record hop in our freshman year. Taking our licks as sophomores, we longed for the time that we would be seniors. Our junior year was filled with excitement beginning with our prom, Ebb Tide. The spring saw Gentlemen Prefer Blondes, and immediately we looked toward the senior play with eager enthusiasm. As seniors, we were first confronted with the mammoth task of the magazine campaign. We worked with tremendous energy and met with great success when we set the new record of $7500. That weekend in Washington, D.C. was perhaps the most enjoyable time of our lives and most certainly an experience we’ll never forget. At the end of the trip we realized how much three people—Miss Frost, Mr. Farnsworth and Mr. Banfield—had done for us without thanks for the last 4 years. When we returned from Washington, our senior play Carousel was foremost in our minds. We worked long and hard to make it a success. Clifton Springs High School has been our life for a long time and we will always owe her something. As seniors, we leave Clifton Springs with our hands eagerly reaching into the future, and with our feet firmly placed on the ground of past times and experiences. 14 PRESIDENT: M. Lapresi TREASURER: K. Knuet VICE PRESIDENT- E. Dalrymple SECRETARY: S. Lindner A most welcome addition to the Class of 1969 was Chirpat Boonchai, our A.F.S. representative to Clifton Springs. Pat” as he is called by everyone, is from Trang City, Irang Province, Thailand. Pat’s American family includes, Mr. and Mrs. Vic Liss, Julie, Fern, Vic, Walter, Dorothy, Johannah and Joseph. Isn’t it good that he was one of eight children ? Pat filled his schedule with English 11, math 11, typing, American History and speech. As a member of the senior band he continued his excellent work on the saxophone. An ardent soccer player, he could often be seen keeping in shape on the playing field after school. As a sailor in the senior play Carousel, Pat also displayed his talents at singing and dancing. Pat has been a true ambassador this year. He crossed the language barrier by using a language of friendship. Everyone was greeted by his warm smile and a cheerful Hi.” Pat’s departure will be regretted by all who had the good fortune of knowing him. Members contribute time, energy, and talent to school and community functions in need of posters, scenery, or decorations. The members spend the balance of their time doing individual art work. Audio-Visual Club The Audio-Visual Club is a service organization helpful to both students and teachers. A-V members, must pass certain written and practical tests on audio-visual equipment before they can operate and maintain the club's equipment. Without the assistance of A-V Club members, teachers and students alike would not be able to reap the benefits of the various audio-visual aids. Trident Staff members of Trident, our school newspaper, learn the basics of journalism and at the same time provide a service greatly appreciated by the student body. The Trident covers many fields of interest ranging from world affairs to school activities. In short, the Trident records the thoughts of the school and of the times. 50 American Field Service The aim of the American Field Service, is to promote world peace through understanding. Members of the club work throughout the year so that a foreign student can stay here in Clifton Springs during the school year. A Clifton Springs student may also be sent abroad during the summer. Thus, representatives of nations help to promote world understanding through the American Field Service. National Honor Society Membership in the National Honor Society is one of the highest honors bestowed upon students. Based upon excellence of character, leadership, scholarship, and service, membership is limited to a percentage of the junior and senior classes. The major project of the Clifton Springs chapter has been the book store, the profits of which supply scholarships to seniors. 51 Future Nurses Club The purpose of the Future Nurses of America is to help members become acquainted with the varied health careers open to interested people in today's world. By participation in the club, each member may learn which field suits her own abilities and interests. Future Teachers Club Membership in the Future Teachers of America helps high school students learn more about teaching. The club has started a cadet teaching program in which Junior and Senior members work as assistant to an elementary teacher. The F.T.A. also plans a field trip to one of the New York State Teachers’ Colleges. 52 Future Homemakers Club The members of the Future Farmers of America have been' active in several areas. Students in the agricultural mechanics class have repaired and painted the chapter’s equipment. Several members have ordered Christmas trees to be planted next Spring. In addition, the members of F.F.A. have organized a basketball team to compete with other F.F.A. teams from area schools. Membership in the Future Homemakers of America provides opportunities for students to have additional experience in planning and executing activities related to homemaking. Thus the club is a complement to the homemaking program in the school. Future Farmers Club 53 Photo Club The Photography Club performs a dual role in that it is both an educational and service organization. Members of the Photo Club have the opportunity to use various photographic equipment and to learn about the printing and developing process. The club also provides pictures of many school functions and activities for the Cliftonian, Trident, and other organizations. Library Club Members of the Library Club are of real assistance in keeping the library operating smoothly. Membership has been limited to those who exhibit eagerness, interest, and promptness. These individuals give up their own time to provide this service to the student body. 54 Senior Band The Senior Band is composed of High School students with an interest in band music. Our band presents two concerts per year, plays at home football games, and represents Clifton Springs High School in parades. Twirlers Color Guard The Twirlers add special interest to the band at football games and in parades. In fact, our band, twirlers, and color guard have won awards for being best in appearance at several parades. Our school, state, and nation are represented by the flags carried by the members of the color guard. The guns protect the flags and stand for unity. 55 The Senior Chorus is composed of those students in grades nine through twelve who share a common interest in singing. The Chorus members work together so that at their concerts the audience will recognize the true meaning of the music as the chorus interprets it. The chorus presents several concerts for the public and a special Christmas concert for the student body. Senior Chorus Junior High Chorus Members of the Junior Chorus are seventh and eighth graders who find enjoyment in singing. The chorus works as a unit in which the members learn to sight read music and sing songs in harmony. 56 Shadows The girl’s sextet, the Shadows is composed of six seniors who have sung together since seventh grade. They have been a part of several school concerts and have also entertained at community affairs. By learning to work well together, the Shadows have felt pride and a deep sense of accomplishment. Echoes Six freshman girls make up the Echoes, a singing group which was organized this year. The girls have enjoyed singing together and plan to keep harmonizing in the future. Double Quartet The double quartet contains six seniors, a junior, and a sophomore who enjoy singing together. They have sung, complementing the choruses, in presentations by the vocal music department. 57 SPORTS G.A.A. ROW 1: C. Wood, .S. Mas-Iyn, G. Rodney, K. Larsen, M. Maslyn, K. Kneut. ROW' 2: M.
