Central School District Number One Phelps and Clifton Springs Clifton Springs High School Clifton Springs, New York The Cliftonian Team Hi Gang! Well, we dismissed the referee this year and the team went wild. Calling the plays Mr. Gover, Dru, and myself sent the cameraman into orbit. We’ll dispense with the pep talk . . . that’s the job of the pictures, but in case you slipped past page one, I think there was something new there ... guess again . .. right! . .. COLOR. Not only do the football players look good, but the cafeteria is entrancing! I take my pinny off to all the staff members: financial, curriculum, organizations and activities, seniors and classes, typists, sports and photography committees. The clock has stopped and we’ve scored a goal. Change seems to be a key move this year and the Cliftonian has managed to join the in crowd”. It took some brainstorming tactics, but we had a lot of fun in the process. It is now up to those of you who answered our subscriptions cry. Ready ... set ... go ahead it’s YOUR Cliftonian '68. Fern 5 6 7 V We, the yearbook staff, dedicate the 1968 Cl f-tonian to Central School District Number One. May it continue to strive for excellence, and bring honor and pride to our school community. ____fHE GENEVA TIMES. The new board will govern the process of building a new high school for the consolidated district. All of the decisions made by the board will be put up to a vote by the people. The present boards will serve as governing bodies of the districts until a new board of education is elected. 9 Administration Pictured on this page is your administrative team. These are the educators who have dedicated themselves to providing excellence in education for CENTRAL SCHOOL DISTRICT NUMBER ONE of Phelps and Clifton Springs. We are all aware that many difficult problems face our new district. We school people ask that the citizens of the district join the Board, the faculty, the administration and—yes, the students—in the solution of these problems as we move forward toward a top educational program. The daughter of Flavio and Elvira de Canata Fiore, Maria is one of six children. She hails from Asuncion, Paraguay, a city of approximately 250,000. The hearts of our student body have been stolen by this sparkling senorita. Through the halls she floated and we along with her. English 11 and 12, French, American History and typing occupied her academic hours. A wall flower? Certainly not! Maybe we should also note her affinity for chewing gum on the premises?? Maria’s American parents are the Dodsworths of Seneca Castle. Mom, Dad, Ken, Sue and Maria thus become the sixth addition to the A.F.S. family in Clifton Springs. With a love of the outdoors, including swimming and water skiing, Maria anxiously awaited her first snowfall which she unfortunately was unable to retain a souvenir of . . . darn. Maria has a twin sister which is a novelty in that her sister is also an A.F.S.'er. She has been residing in Wauwatosa, Wisconsin this year. Their reunion is a happy anticipation for both. To be a doctor is Maria’s ambition, but we see her as an ambassador in the United Nations if not the Cliftonian ’’cover-girl” for 1968! Class of '68 PRESIDENT— Fern Liss VICE-PRESIDENT— Daniel Driscoll SECRETARY— Sandra VanRomer TREASURER— Daniel Converse As the Class of ’68 walks out the doors of Clifton Springs High School for the final time, many memorable experiences will go with us ... a storehouse of knowledge, a log of good times, an aura of friendship. We as eager freshmen, sponsored our first record hop. Thus the foundation was laid for our senior trip. A bakesale as sophomores added to the treasury also. Our junior year kept every member on his toes. Refreshments were sold at both football and basketball games along with programs and a last minute endeavor—pompoms. October saw Old London”, our junior prom, come to life through the long unfailing hours of toil that were contributed. Our excitement climbed with the nightly rehearsals of Pillow Talk; when it was labeled a true production”, we were elated and proud. Our first job as seniors was the annual magazine campaign. The $7,000 goal was reached and we were a giant step closer to Washington. With Mr. Banfield again in the director’s spot, we staged our second production, The Mouse That Roared. These profits culminated our fund-raising activities. Washington, D.C. ... At last our goal was attained. Every minute of the trip was worth all our anticipation. Through the years our class has learned to cooperate and to exchange ideas. As we walk out, we clasp the keys of friendship, knowledge, and experience in our hand. 16 DAVID LEE ALLEN Rupert” Man is the hunter; women are the game.” JEFFREY CHADDOCK ANDERSON Mf A leader of men, a follower of women.’ JUDITH LYNN ANDERSON Judi Don’t just stand there, do something.” DEBORAH L. In addition to this they continued to promote sportsmanship in all athletic contests. Junior High Basketball Junior Varsity Squad Varsity Squad After a somewhat disappointing start, this year’s football team went on to accumulate three well-earned victories. The team gained in ability and experience as the season progressed. The highlight of the season was the victory over the local rival, the Red Jacket Indians, in the final game of the ’67 season. Cross Country Bowling The past season showed rapid improvement in our cross country team. As the only Class B school in the league, Clifton was pitted against much larger schools, only two of which showed marked superiority over our team. Bob Brouwer, the only senior on the team, served competently as captain. These dedicated runners look forward to an even better season next year. This year’s bowling league competition ran close with most of the teams being separated by only a few points. Sparked by dashes of ability from all members, our team had a very energetic showing. Wrestling The wrestling team under the direction of a new coach, Mr. Croucher, again displayed a fine sense of team pride and spirit despite a winless record. Steady improvement was apparent as the season progressed which foreshadows future success for the team. 63 Frst Six Starters Gone — Clifton Rebuilds From Coach U| By NORM JOLLOW CLIFTON SPRINGS—The un- lefeated champions of the Fin-jer Lakes basketball conference must rebuild’ from the :oach up this season. Track Although the track team accumulated no wins, the talent, effort, and spirit exhibited by each of the members foreshadowed success in the future. John Castle led the team in scoring with his performances in the shot put. 66 Tennis The tennis team, coached by Mr. Wertz, enjoyed its second fine season since its introduction into the sports curriculum. The highlights of the season were the two victories over Phelps. Golf For the second consecutive year, Clifton Springs was represented by a golf team. The team, led by Seniors Charles Morphy and Chip Tatro accumulated two wins, each over Victor, while under the direction of Mr. Cobbett. Baseball Mr. Case and the baseball team became league champions once again this year suffering only one loss. This was due to consistent and efficient batting, fielding, and pitching. The team earned the right to represent Clifton Springs in the Class B sectional play.
