Building a Firm Foundation HOWARD W. SMITH, District Principal The staff, the buildings, and the equipment furnished for the pupils of our school represent an investment in the future of our community, our state, and our nation. Such an investment presents an obligation for pupils to grow scholastically, socially and morally. The 1808 publication of Elective Afjinities stated: Three things are to be looked to in a building: that it stand on the right spot; that it be securely founded: that it be successfully executed.” If these statements aie tiue for the physical and material aspects of our school, they are even more important to you, the students. Meeting the challenge of selecting appropriate and worthwhile goals, patiently building a firm foundation to achieve these goals, and finally, moving with determination to a successful achievement of these- plans is your obligation. “Why build these cities glorious If man unbuilded goes? In vain we build the world, unless The builder also grows.” Edwin Markham 6

Upon the Board of Education rests the responsibility for school policies, procedures, and expenditures. The excellent manner in which our school is directed is due to their wise and experienced judgement. We would like to express our gratitude to the Board for the fine education they have provided for us. 8
